Without a doubt, the Backstreet Boys are
responsible for some of the most distinct
and memorable pop tunes of our time.
Their voices combine the strong elements
that make pop music a powerful and
evocative musical genre. The group’s rise
to fame however, has not been without
setbacks and challenges. They have
endured deaths of beloved colleagues and
family members, encountered lawsuits,
undergone several management and label
changes and have fought their own
personal demons. In 2001, overcome by
the tragedy of 9/11, the Boys called off their
tour, uncertain if and when they would
ever return.
Reeling from the September 11 attacks and
exhausted from years of churning out and
promoting albums, the Backstreet Boys took
a long and indefinite hiatus from the group,
the limelight and each other. The members
embarked on individual pursuits and
projects. Nick released his solo album,
Now Or Never. Brian focused on his
foundation. Howie sank his teeth into his real
estate business. Kevin ventured into musical
theater and entertainment production.

Lastly, AJ continued working on his sobriety
while dabbling in other personal projects.
As with all things that happen, AJ’s battle
with alcoholism and his road to recovery
became instrumental in reuniting the group.
In a candid, emotional and moving episode
of Oprah, AJ spoke of his personal struggle.
Unbeknownst to him, his four Backstreet
brothers showed up to surprise him with
their support. From there began the rebirth
of the Backstreet Boys.
Throughout their absence from the limelight
and entertainment stage, fans always
believed the Boys would resurface. Among
us Filipinos, the hope never faltered that,
not only would our Boys return to music
but that they would revisit Philippine shores.
BSB mania began when a quintet of gifted,
vibrant and good-looking boys from Orlando,
Florida first came to the Philippines on Octo-
ber 18, 1996 at a time when their hit single
“Get Down” spawned the latest dance
craze and their sentimental ballad “Anywhere
For You” was scorching the charts. Filipinos
immediately recognized their talent and
charisma and soon a strong following
quickly developed.
Following the uncertainty of a five-year
hiatus, the Backstreet Boys released their
latest album, Never Gone, to the delight
and surprise of their numerous followers.
This much awaited and most welcome
return to the music scene sparked the
resurgence among their fans here in the
Philippines.
Originally formed in November 2005,
the Backstreet Boys Fan Club Philippines
(BSBFCP) was founded by faithful supporters
since 1996. Made up of students, young
professionals, single and married, very
young and not too old, from all areas of
the country and different levels of society,
the diversity is a testament to the
Backstreet Boys’ staying power and
universal appeal.
January 20, 2006 marked another milestone
in Philippine BSB history when the

The Backstreet Boys return to Manila for their 2006 Never Gone Tour
quintessential boy group returned for a
one-night engagement as part of the
Southeast Asian Leg of their Never Gone
tour. After nearly a decade since their
last visit, their Filipino devotees eagerly
embraced the opportunity to finally see
them once more. In a sellout concert at
the Araneta Coliseum, tens of thousands
of wildly appreciative, screaming, shrieking,
dancing fans came out in full force to
welcome their idols. In the aftermath of the
highly successful show, a renewed and
revitalized outpouring of Backstreet Boys
frenzy ensued. A week later, certain
individuals met to talk about organizing
an event to gather the BSB fans that later
turned out to be the foundation of the
Backstreet Boys Fan Club Philippines.
The Backstreet Boys Fan Club Philippines
was formally established to continually
provide the latest news on the Backstreet
Boys and to unite as many of their fans
through friendship, love and music. Blessed
with the support of the Sony-BMG Philippines
through Mr. Chito Confiado, the fan club
continued its efforts on keeping the
Backstreet Pride alive in the country.
From the time since it was established, its
membership has grown in number,
comprised of both Filipino fans as well as
international affiliates.
BSBFCP’s inaugural major project was
its first Fan Conference held at Icebergs
Metrowalk in Ortigas last March 11, 2006.
Highlights of the event included a sharing
session among the fans, a sumptuous
lunch, unique giveaways, video presentations,
the auction of the exclusive autographed
Never Gone CD and the guest appearance
of Sony-BMG’s label manager,
Mr. Chito Confiado. The second Fan
Conference held at the Hard Rock Café in
Makati last June 3 coincided with the
formal launching of the fan club’s official
website. The program also showcased
the viewing of the exclusive MYX interview
with the Backstreet Boys, Brian’s
acceptance speech at the MTV Asia Awards
and the auctioning of the last autographed

Never Gone CD. Later that week, came the
once in a lifetime opportunity for fan club
head coordinator Lorry Lizares to
interview Brian Littrell. As part of
promotional efforts for Brian’s first solo
album, Brian telephoned Lorry on at around
10 p.m. on June 7, 2006 to talk about his
Gospel album, Welcome Home.
Only halfway through the year and yet
so much had already happened. While new
and lasting friendships were being formed
among the club members, a partnership
came to a sudden and unexpected close
when, towards the end of June, senior BSB
Kevin Richardson announced his departure
from the group. July marked the beginning
of a new page in Backstreet history as the
remaining four members returned to the
studios to record a new album. While
speculations still abound that Kevin might
someday rejoin the group, both the BSB
and their fans go on keeping the Backstreet
pride alive.
The quest to reach out to more Filipino
Backstreet fans came to greater fruition
when the BSBFCP made it to national
television via the popular talk show Mel &
Joey. In an episode dedicated to
extreme fans and collectors, club
administrator Nina Nieras was featured
for her enviable acquisition of a vast array
of Backstreet Boys memorabilia.
In October 2006, the third Fan Conference
was held once again at the Hard Rock Café
in Makati. Coinciding with the launch of
the BSBFCP membership cards and
Community Blend, its official newsletter, the
affair was the last club activity for the year.
From one desperately-hoped for, highly-
anticipated and hugely-attended evening
came an extended household full of
Backstreet lovers. It has been a memorable
year for Filipino fans beginning with that
sellout concert and culminating with an
organization that fosters lasting friendship
among strangers.

January 20, 2006 is a date that’s forever been etched into the
consciousness of every true Backstreet Boys (BSB) fan. It marks
the return of the popular boy band from Florida, to Philippine shores
for a very limited one-night engagement at historical Araneta Coliseum.
Nearly ten years since they first made it to Manila, as upstarts in the
music industry, here to promote their freshman and sophomore
albums, the five boys were all grown up and back to give the
Philippines and the rest of Asia a taste of their most recent fare.
The Never Gone tour proved monumental in many ways. It was
carried out in support of the group’s first studio album in five
years. It also marked Kevin’s farewell performance with the Boys,
as he soon announced his retirement to focus on personal goals.
For die-hard, loyal Filipino fans, it served as a catalyst for scattered
followers longing to find a clique to share their BSB passion with.
Thanks to the renewed fervor elicited by the Backstreet Boys’ visit
and show, the Backstreet Boys Fan Club Philippines (BSBFCP) was
formally reorganized and re-launched. It has since become a
formal coming together of true BSB aficionados.
Last 17 February 2007, the BSBFCP celebrated its first anniversary at
the Hard Rock Café Makati, which has been home to two of the club’s
previous three fan conventions (fan cons). Members turned out
in force to celebrate the special event and many of the BSBFCP’s
close friends, sponsors and supporters also came to grace the
occasion.
The program of activities was carefully thought out primarily to
provide fun, pleasure and memories to the Filipino BSB fans who
have remained true to the Boys. Among the freebies given out
were commemorative anniversary pins and several collectible items
that were distributed in the raffle draws throughout the afternoon.
Those lucky enough to be drawn took home a copy of Brian Littrell’s
Welcome Home CD, special edition magazines featuring the BSB,
shirts, clocks and other memorabilia.
The affair also featured an audio visual presentation (AVP) on the
history of the BSBFCP, which was shown while guests and attendees
partook of the afternoon snacks. The AVP was followed by special
anniversary messages recorded by local artists like Jay-R, Cueshe,
Gabby Eigenmann and Toni Gonzaga, who is a proud Backstreet
admirer and our Featured Fan in this issue of Community Blend.
Several of the club’s very important friends and sponsors also gave
their greetings and messages, among them Nelson Capulso and
Mark Alcantara of Prime Channel and Chito Confiado of Sony-BMG
Philippines. As an added testament to the club’s global reach and
significance, BSB’s very own Howie Dorough and his sister,
Pollyanna, also sent an e-mail to the BSBFCP after learning of its
anniversary through their web assistant, Sarah Albernathy.
Apart from being the recipient of such notable greetings, the
BSBFCP also delivered its own video birthday greeting to the
January BSB celebrants, AJ and Nick.
While the anniversary celebration was underway, members and
guests were informed about the availability of membership cards
and shirts which anyone can procure by contacting the
administrators via e-mail or text.
Another highlight of the affair was the auction that has also become
a staple in the club’s fan conventions. Up for grabs were a rare
poster and a specially-designed airbrushed shirt that had been
used during the Backstreet Boys’ stay. After the bidding war, the
festivities turned to child’s play as attendees took part in a BSB
guessing game. This was followed by a couple of special dance
numbers, the first one from a group of fans who grooved to
the tune of “Set It Off” while the admins showed their ware to a
medley of BSB songs. The final track on the medley was
the Boys’ smash hit, “Larger Than Life,” which became the cue for
the audience to join in the dancing, with everyone emulating the
steps in the “Larger Than Life” music video. With that, the fourth fan
convention commemorating the first anniversary of the Backstreet
Boys Fan Club Philippines came to a resounding and memorable close.

HOWIE DOROUGH
Ever the entrepreneur of the group, Howie
Dorough has added music production and talent
management to his list of business credentials.
He has partnered with long-time friend, CJ
Huyer to establish HC Entertainment Group
– an independent music production and artist
management company. Their official website

In the middle of the Boys’ promotion for their new
album, Unbreakable, Howie Dorough announced
that he is engaged to his longtime girlfriend,
Leigh Boniello. They plan to marry later this
year. In an interview with PEOPLE Magazine,
he said that “She wasn’t expecting it, and I was
quite nervous – more nervous about proposing
to her in front of 40 family and friends than about
performing in front of 40,000 people onstage,”
He made the proposal on the New Year’s Eve
at Boniello’s family home in New Jersey. The
couple, both 33, met in 2000, when Leigh, a film-
exec-turned-real-estate-broker, was working as
the Backstreet Boys’ Webmaster. They say they
were “very careful” to keep their engagement
private at first, but with the wedding right around
the corner, felt it was finally time to share the
news.
The proposal was sweet and truly unexpected as
Howie decided to pull a practical joke on Leigh in
front of her whole family. “He acted like he forgot
to give me one present for Christmas – it was
in a large box.” Playing off an inside joke that
Howie was “dangling carrots” in front of Leigh
whenever they talked about marriage during their
6-year relationship, she opened the box and
found three large carrots inside.
“She was laughing and trying to tell everyone the
joke and by the time she turned around I was
down on one knee with the real carrot,” says
Howie. Make that more than three carats. Howie
designed the engagement ring – one round,
brilliant-cut diamond surrounded by two smaller
round diamonds, all set in platinum – with a
family friend at Plantation Jewelers in Winter
Garden, Fla.
“It meant a lot for my whole family to hear it,”
Leigh says. “The room was filled with love, more
than I ever expected.” The couple is planning a
wedding for 250 guests. Howie is hopeful that
he will be the next one to add to the Backstreet
family as he and his future wife can’t wait to start
a family.

KEVIN RICHARDSON
After the shocking and saddening
departure of BSB’s resident big brother,
Kevin Richardson, in June of last year,
the eldest former member returned to his
other passion – acting.
Back in 2003, when the Backstreet Boys
were in the middle of their five-year
hiatus from the limelight, the collective
sound and each other, Kevin grabbed
the opportunity to fulfill a lifelong dream.
He made his Broadway debut by taking
over the part of Billy Flynn from actor
Billy Zane in Chicago: The Musical.
His role was the same part played by
Richard Gere in the Academy Award-
winning 2002 film adaptation, which also
starred Renee Zellweger and Catherine
Zeta-Jones. Richardson even went
on to reprise the role in the West End
production in London.
In November of last year, In more
personal and very gratifying news for
Kevin and his beloved wife, Kristin,
the couple finally received their much
awaited present from the stork when
Kristin gave birth to their first child,
Mason Richardson, who was born at
4:56 AM in a fine Tuesday morning of
July 3, 2007. He described his son as
‘a healthy 8 lbs. 2 ounces / 20.5 inches
long and has a head full of dark hair’ in
his MySpace blog last July 5. He further
adds that Kristin and the young one are
perfect and he’s a new man. “Thank you
for your positive vibes and prayers,” he
finished.
And speaking of MySpace, he edited his
profile, added a few solo pictures and
on the header of the page, it says about
something to look forward to: “Coming
Soon, 11-22-2007”. Whatever it is, all the
Backstreet Boys will be in full support to
Kevin even if he’s already left the group.

NICK CARTER
Don’t look now but Nick Carter may
well be n his way back to golden-
haired heartthrob status. It seems that
the Backstreet Boys’ baby has been
putting a lot of work into whipping
himself to shape with his new fitness
secret, he NutriSystem diet regimen.
The NutriSystem program is the same
system which former ‘N Sync member,
Joey Fatone credits as being part of
the reason behind 20 pounds he has
lost. For his part, Nick reportedly
managed to shed 30 pounds in just
six weeks with the help of NutriSystem
and under the guidance of a personal
trainer.
It could be that Nick has heard more
than his share of jabs regarding the
weight he seemed to continually put
on over the last several years. It might
also be that he would like to surprise
his numerous adoring fans with a
buffer, leaner and more sculpted
physique when the Boys go on tour
to promote their new album. Or, it
may have to do with Nick Carter’s
upcoming film, Fast Glass, under the
direction of Kim Bass.

Valentine’s Day
Basically, it’s hard to go around a place that’s
entirely foreign to me. I just came to the US a
week ago. I went here by invitation from
my godfather who’s working as a successful
real estate agent in Los Angeles. I’ve
expressed my interest to work abroad and
he’s the first person who offered help. I’ve
been a college graduate for almost four
years now but it seems like I still don’t know
what is the type of work that will really make
me happy and contented. I guess that’s the
part of the personality of a person being
born on the day of summer solstice.
Sometimes, I just really don’t know where to
focus my priorities.
So, anyway, my godfather’s daughter, Daphne,
was excited when I received my first
invitation for a job interview in downtown as
a travel counselor. It was scheduled in the
afternoon and she decided to tour me
around the area after that. It’s nice to be in
a different place and to experience a
new kind of culture. Being a travel
professional, I was always fascinated with
every place I’ve been to. And I was so glad
that I landed on the job with a good pay that
will be enough as a start of my career and
life here in the US. I got accepted
and I’ll be starting next week.
After the interview, Daphne picked me up and
decided to treat me for dinner in some
place for a celebration. And besides, it’s a
Valentine’s Day and it just so happened that
we’re both single. We ended up in this nice
place that serves Italian. We both like pasta
and the variety of it overwhelmed us when
we get to choose what to eat. The place
is packed and I’m lucky to find a group
that’s about to leave a booth. I immediately
marked our territory just in time that some
man also sat on the other side of the table to
mark the place. I frowned and I got nervous.
For a foreigner like me, I’m still not used to
deal around these people.
“Excuse me, sir. I got here first.” I politely told
the man. He’s wearing a cap. He’s a big man.
Daphne, come here please, I silently prayed.

The man looked at me and he literally made

I mean, I’ve been a Backstreet Boys fan since
high school. And part of my agenda of coming
to LA was also to have the chance to see

He should know better not to use that smile

booth and will look for another one which
is very impossible at this moment. “Uh, maybe
we can share the table instead, Sir.” I tried to
compromise.

He showed me his arm. “I got goosebumps.”
He looked around. “Where’s your friend, by
the way?”

Nick nodded. He looked at someone then
nodded. “No problem. So, how’s your
interview?”
Is he really like this? Making some idle chat
with a stranger? I thought. “Great. I got in.”
I smiled. “What’s your name, by the way?” I
asked, trying to feign innocence on who is

and get to know Nick better, I smiled at that
thought.
“Congratulations. I’m Nick. And you?”
“Crislyn.”
“Cristin?”
Why do some people always mistake my
name into Cristin? It wasn’t that hard to hear
the right word. “It’s LYN. Crislyn. Are you a
resident here?” I gave him this innocent smile.
Nick grinned. “Yeah. I live here, just
somewhere nearby. Me and my friends just
dropped by here to get something to eat. It’s
Valentine’s and we don’t have dates.
We decided to just hang around. How about
you? Don’t you have someplace to go?
It’s Valentine’s. Don’t you have a date?”
“I don’t have any. Besides, I just came here
in LA. I’m still trying to know my way around.”
“Really? That’s great.” Nick cleared his throat.
“Listen, it would be fun if you come with us
tonight. The more, the merrier. My friend is
having a party at his place and it will be great
if you meet other people. It will help you have
a good time on your stay here in LA.”
I have this urge to say yes immediately but,
common sense tells me... “I just knew you,
Nick. I hope that you don’t mind if I’m just
being careful. I don’t know you or any of your
friends. I’m just new in this city.”
Nick thought for a moment. “I guess, you’re
right. I can’t blame you on that.” He smiled
again. Does he always smile? From the last
time I saw him in a concert in our country,
he barely smiled. The Nick Carter in front of
me is a different person. Maybe, this is the
real him. Friendly and seemed approachable.
I admit that I felt comfortable in just minutes
of sitting there while waiting for Daphne.
