*These  rules  are  not  final  and  are  subject  to  change  closer  to  the  tournament
date.  These  rules  are  accurate  as  of  March  1st  2011.
Section  1:  General  Rules  (all  sports)
A)  Personal  and  Team  Conduct

1. Participants  are  required  to  represent  themselves  and  their  respective

schools  with  respect  and  dignity.

2. Any  team  or  individual  involved  in  destructive  or  negative  behavior  at
Post-‐Secondary  Games  2011  events  or  venues,  including  hotels  and
accommodations,  will  be  ejected  from  the  tournament  at  the  discretion  of
the  Advisory  Committee.  Spirit  Deposits  may  also  be  forfeited.
3. The  PSG  Committee  reserves  the  right  to  disqualify  any  team  based  on  the
behavior  of  any  given  team  member  of  that  particular  team.
4. Alcohol,  smoking  and/or  other  banned  substances  are  PROHIBITED  and
are  not  to  be  consumed  or  used  in  the  dressing  rooms  or  anywhere  in  the
gyms  or  surrounding  areas.  Failure  to  comply  with  this  rule  will  result  in
the  expulsion  of  the  player(s)  from  the  Tournament  and  possible
suspension  of  the  team(s).  A  referee  may  eject  a  player/team  if,  at  his/her
discretion,  he/she  deems  the  player/team  to  be  under  the  influence  of
alcohol  or  illegal  substances.

B)  Starting  of  the  Game

1. A  representative  from  each  team  (coach/captain)  is  required  to

check-‐in  at  the  score  table  prior  to  each  game.  Here  they  must  fill  out
game  roster  sheets  fully  and  accurately.
2. It  is  recommended  that  both  teams  be  dressed  and  ready  to  play  10
minutes  before  the  scheduled  start  of  their  game.    All  games  start  at
the  time  published  in  the  schedule.
3. A  late  team  will  be  given  a  grace  period  of  five  (5)  minutes  past  the
scheduled  start  time,  which  will  be  deducted  from  the  total  playing
time.
4. Any  team  without  the  required  number  of  players  within  5  minutes  of
the  scheduled  time  will  default  that  game.    If  any  team  member  is  in
doubt  about  their  eligibility,  they  should  speak  with  their  team
captain/coach,  the  Scorekeeper,  or  anyone  on  the  PSG  committee
immediately.
5. If  both  teams  are  late,  both  will  default  and  no  points  will  be  awarded.
6. Teams  defaulting  a  game  for  any  reason  will  have  half  their  Spirit
Deposit  forfeited.
7. If  players,  team  officials,  game  timekeeper,  etc.  show  up  for  a  game  in
a  condition  which  in  the  referee’s  opinion,  render  them  unable  to  take
part,  the  referee  may  default  the  game.

These  rules  are  accurate  as  of  March  1st  2011.

8. With  respect  to  dangerous  playing  conditions,  the  decision  of  whether
to  begin  or  continue  a  game  is  solely  the  decision  of  the  referees.  The
Commissionaire  shall  reschedule  a  game  postponed  for  any  reason  at
the  earliest  possible  time  prior  to  the  end  of  the  round  robin.  If  more
than  one  half  remains  to  be  played,  then  the  entire  game  shall  be
replayed.  If  less  than  one  full  period  remains  to  be  played,  then  only
the  unfinished  portion  of  the  game  shall  be  played.

C)  Coaches  and  Captains

1. Each  team  must  have  a  designated  Team  Captain  and/or  Coach.

2. It  is  the  responsibility  of  each  Team  Captain/Coach  to  ensure  that  all
players  of  their  team  are  fully  eligible  to  participate.
3. Each  team  must  identify  their  Team  Captain  and/or  Coach  at  the
beginning  of  each  game.  If  the  captain  is  not  present,  the  team  will
nominate  a  player  to  be  acting  captain  for  that  game.  This  person  will
take  on  all  duties  and  responsibilities  as  the  actual  captain.  This
person  will  be  identified  as  the  acting  captain  on  the  score  sheet.
4. ONLY  THE  CAPTAIN/COACH  should  be  speaking  with  the  referees
during  the  game  time.  Players  who  wish  to  discuss  any  issue  with  a
referee  must  ask  the  Captain  or  Coach  to  speak  on  their  behalf.
5. It  is  the  responsibility  of  each  Team  Captain/Coach  to  fill  out  the  game
roster  sheet  fully  before  each  game  and  sign  it  to  affirm  the  eligibility
and  information  of  each  player  on  the  roster.
6. Team  Captains  and  Coach  are  expected  to  know  and  understand  the
general  and  specific  rules  for  their  sport.  They  must  abide  by  them,
and  ensure  that  their  team  is  aware  of  them  and  their  consequences.  If
there  is  any  confusion  regarding  the  rules,  please  contact  the  PSG
committee.
7. It  is  the  Team  Captain's  and  Coach’s  duty  to  know  his/her  duties  and
responsibilities  before  the  game  begins.

These  rules  are  accurate  as  of  March  1st  2011.

Section  2:  Specific  Rules  (Dodgeball  –  Prison  Style)
A)  Teams  and  Players

1. A  team  must  have  a  minimum  of  6  players  on  the  court  and  can  have  a
maximum  of  8  per  game.  If  at  any  time  a  team  has  less  than  6  players  for  a
game  the  game  is  a  default.
2. It  shall  be  the  responsibility  of  the  away  team  to  make  alternate  sweater
arrangements  when  there  is  a  conflict  between  two  team  colours.
3. Each  player  must  wear  matching  colours  to  be  eligible  to  play.

B)  Equipment

1. No  jewellery  (unless  properly  taped  down),  non-‐elastic  headbands,  or

hard  support  braces  are  allowed  during  game  time.  Captains  will  be
warned  at  the  beginning  of  the  game  to  have  all  their  players  remove  such
items.  During  the  game,  players  found  with  such  items  will  be  asked  to
leave  play  until  the  item  is  removed.
2. Players  may  not  wear  any  type  of  gloves  as  it  may  give  that  player  an
unfair  advantage  when  catching  a  ball.
3. Dodgeball  will  be  played  with  4  official  dodgeballs  (provided).  Each  team
will  be  allowed  to  warm  up  with  two  of  the  4  Dodgeballs  provided.
Players  are  not  to  kick  or  sit  on  the  Dodgeballs.
4. All  players  must  have  a  pinnie/jersey  with  a  defined  and  separate  number
on  it,  and  must  be  in  contrasting  colour  to  the  opposing  team.
5. Proper  gym  attire  must  be  worn  to  participate  (no  jeans  or  pants  /  shorts
with  zippers).  Proper  athletic  footwear  for  the  sport  is  required  (Running
shoes  with  non-‐marking  soles  -‐  no  street  shoes,  boots,  dress  shoes,  bare
feet,  or  sandals  etc).
6. Gym  bags,  shoes  and  any  other  clothing  or  items  must  be  kept  outside  of
the  gym.

C)  Game  Lengths

1. All  matches  will  consist  of  3  games;  each  game  will  end  after  10  minutes.
A  warning  will  be  given  to  both  teams  when  one  minute  is  remaining  in
the  game
2. If  the  match  is  completed  ahead  of  schedule,  the  remainder  of  the  time
can  be  used  to  play  friendly,  non-‐scored  games.
3. A  game  is  finished  when  all  of  the  opposing  team’s  players  are  in  “jail”.

These  rules  are  accurate  as  of  March  1st  2011.

4. If  the  10-‐minutes  are  up  after  a  game,  the  team  with  the  greater  number
of  players  still  alive  wins.  If  it’s  a  tie,  additional  time  will  be  given  until
there  is  an  uneven  amount  of  players  on  both  sides.

D)  Gameplay

1. Teams  will  start  the  game  touching  the  back  wall  on  their  half  of  the
playing  zone,  which  extends  to  the  wall  according  to  rule  D14.  The
official  will  throw  each  team  a  ball  at  the  same  time  and  the  match  will
begin  (the  official  may  also  choose  to  place  the  balls  on  the  center  line
-‐-‐  the  official  will  discuss  options  with  the  captain’s  in  the  pre-‐game
meeting).
2. No  head  shots  will  be  allowed.  A  head  shot  is  defined  as  direct
contact  to  a  player's  head.  If  a  head  shot  is,  at  the  discretion  of  the
official,  intentionally  committed,  the  player  committing  the  infraction
will  be  given  a  warning.  If  the  official  sees  the  same  player  throw
another  head  shot  intentionally,  the  official  will  ask  that  player  to
leave  the  gym  for  remainder  of  the  game.  If  the  official  determines  that
the  player  intentionally  used  his/her  head  to  block  the  ball,  that  player
will  be  out  as  if  it  did  not  hit  their  head.  Otherwise,  neither  player  is
out  and  the  hit  does  not  count.
3. To  maintain  counter-‐clockwise  motion,  players  traveling  to  and  from
jail  must  always  travel  beside  the  wall  on  their  right  hand  side.  Players
are  required  to  completely  go  to  the  wall  before  crossing  into  the
others  team’s  zone  on  the  way  to  or  from  jail.  Any  violations  of  this
rule  will  result  in  a  warning  from  the  official.  Following  multiple
warnings,  the  offending  player  will  be  asked  to  leave  the  gym.  As  well,
the  next  game,  the  offending  players’  team  will  play  with  one  player
less.  The  offending  player  can  play  in  the  following  game.  If  a  team
only  has  6  players  and  a  player  is  ejected,  the  team  will  default  the
entire  match.
4. A  player  who  is  ruled  out  must  go  to  their  team's  jail  through  the
designated  corridor  following  rule  D5.  As  a  courtesy  to  the  other  team
and  to  prevent  any  possible  injury,  players  that  are  out  and  on  their
way  to  jail  must  to  raise  one  hand  to  indicate  that  they  are  out.
5. A  ball  is  considered  live  when  thrown  by  any  player  in  the  game.  The
player  throwing  the  ball  may  be  either  in  the  playing  zone  or  in  jail.  A
ball  that  bounces  off  or  glances  off  a  player  in  the  playing  zone
remains  live  until  it  becomes  dead  following  rule  D8.
6. A  ball  is  considered  dead  when  it  either  strikes  another  ball  or
anything  else  in  the  gym  that  is  not  a  player  in  either  playing  zone.
This  includes,  but  is  not  limited  to,  the  walls,  floor  and  ceiling  of  the
gym,  the  official,  players  in  either  jail  and,  or  any  other  obstructions
such  as  the  basketball  nets.

These  rules  are  accurate  as  of  March  1st  2011.

7. A  player  that  is  struck  by  a  live  ball  is  out,  unless  that  ball  is  caught  by
a  team-‐mate  in  the  playing  zone  while  it  is  still  live  (a  live  player  who
throws  the  ball  across  the  center  line  which  hits  an  opposing  player,
then  remains  in  the  air  back  across  the  centre  line  and  is  caught  by  the
original  player  or  a  teammate  of  the  original  player,  the  opposing
player  is  safe).  A  player  is  out  even  if  the  live  ball  that  contacts  them
originates  from  their  own  team.  A  player  struck  by  a  dead  ball  is  not
out.  A  ball  in  a  player’s  hands  is  considered  an  extension  of  the
player’s  body  and  therefore  if  he/she  deflects  a  ball  with  one  in  their
hands,  it  is  considered  a  hit  and  they  are  out.
8. Spiking  the  ball  is  not  allowed  as  balls  must  be  thrown  to  be  live.  A
player  who  spikes  the  ball  goes  to  jail,  and  the  spiked  ball  is  given  to
the  opposing  team.
9. Players  may  not  pinch  the  outside  of  the  ball  material  to  throw  or
place  fingers  in  holes  in  the  ball.  This  practice  will  ruin  the  balls
even  more  than  usual  wear.  If  players  are  caught  multiple  times  doing
this,  they  will  be  asked  to  leave  the  gym.
10. Players  are  not  allowed  to  lick  their  hands  to  attempt  to  gain  grip  on
the  ball.  This  is  not  sanitary  and  spreads  germs.  If  a  player  is  caught
doing  this,  they  will  be  issued  a  warning.  If  this  continues  multiple
times,  the  player  will  be  asked  to  leave  the  gym.
11. If  a  live  ball  thrown  by  any  member  of  opposing  team  is  caught  by  a
player  in  the  playing  zone,  one  player  from  that  team  returns  from
their  jail  (through  the  designated  corridor,  as  per  rule  E5).  If  there  are
no  players  in  the  team’s  jail,  and  the  player  who  threw  the  ball  is  in  the
playing  zone,  then  that  player  is  out
12. Players  may  not  step  or  reach  across  boundary  lines  (center  line  and
jail  lines)  for  any  reason.  A  player  in  the  playing  zone  who  violates  this
rule  will  be  ruled  out.  Players  in  jail  who  violate  this  rule  will  be
forced  to  return  control  of  any  balls  obtained  illegally  to  the  other
team.    A  ball  that  is  still  in  the  air  can  be  caught  by  a  player,  as  long  as
their  arms  are  the  only  thing  ‘over  the  line’.  If  a  ball  is  on  the  ground
across  a  line,  an  opposing  player  cannot  pick  that  ball  up.  This
includes  reaching  over  and  hitting  the  ball  into  your  zone.  If  a  player
continues  to  cross  the  lines  after  being  warned,  that  player  may  be
given  a  penalty  at  the  official’s  discretion.  This  rule  applies  to
"suicides".  Suicides  are  not  allowed,  if  a  player  commits  a  suicide  they
will  warned,  and  upon  multiple  occurrences  they  will  be  ask  to  leave
the  gym  and  return  in  the  next  match  -‐  no  substitute  will  be  made.
13. If  there  are  no  players  in  the  opposing  team's  jail,  the  boundary  line
extends  to  the  rear  wall.  If  a  player  is  on  their  way  to  the  jail,  they  are
considered  in  jail,  and  any  ball  in  the  jail  area  is  to  remain  there  for
them.  At  the  discretion  of  the  official,  players  will  be  given  a  grace
period  to  vacate  the  jail  area  upon  the  arrival  of  this  player.
14. If  a  player  is  called  out  while  in  possession  of  a  ball,  they  must
immediately  DROP  the  ball  and  go  directly  to  jail.

These  rules  are  accurate  as  of  March  1st  2011.

15. No  kicking  the  ball  will  be  allowed.  Violations  of  this  rule  may  result
in  penalties  or  more  serious  punishment  such  as  conduct  reviews.
16. If  an  official  blows  their  whistle,  players  in  possession  of  a  ball  must
hold  them  and  stop  all  play.  The  official  will  blow  their  whistle  again
to  resume  play  after  the  incident  has  been  resolved.
17. Players  are  to  self-‐officiate  being  hit  and  stepping  over  lines  in  an
honour  system.  The  official’s  main  role  shall  be  to  clarify  rules,  enforce
safety  and  to  resolve  any  disagreements  between  teams.
18. Both  teams  must  continue  to  try  to  eliminate  remaining  players  on  the
other  team.  They  may  not  simply  throw  balls  back  and  forth  between
the  playing  zone  and  the  jail  in  an  attempt  to  waste  time.  If  the  official
determines  that  a  team  is  wasting  time,  the  official  may  decide  to  call
players  out  or  awards  the  ball  to  the  other  team,  or  in  the  case  of  very
lopsided  numbers  between  teams,  the  official  may  award  the  win  to
the  team  not  wasting  time.  Prior  to  doing  either  of  these  two  things,
the  official  will  give  a  warning  to  the  offending  team.
19. The  speed  of  the  game  is  controlled  by  the  official.  If  the  official  feels
that  a  player  is  holding  a  ball  for  an  extended  period  of  time,  the
official  will  instruct  that  player  to  throw  the  ball.  If  the  same  player
consistently  is  not  moving  the  ball  at  a  good  pace,  the  official  may
assess  a  penalty.  There  is  NOT  a  five  second  rule  in  effect.

E)  Defaults

1. If  a  team  fails  to  appear  with  a  minimum  of  six  players  within  five  minutes
past  the  scheduled  start  of  the  game,  they  will  default  the  game  to  the
opposition.
2. The  winning  team  in  a  defaulted  game  will  be  given  2  points  and  a  2-‐0
victory
3. The  team  awarded  the  win  for  the  defaulted  game  may  use  the  remaining
time  and  facility  for  practice  purposes  or  a  friendly  game.
4. If  both  teams  fail  to  start  on  time  and  use  the  five-‐minute  grace  period.  If
both  teams  end  up  defaulting  the  game,  both  teams  will  incur  a  1-‐0  loss.
5. Defaults  and  Suspensions  may  result  in  a  loss  of  Spirit  Deposit.

F)  Tournament  Standings

1. In  round  robin  play,  standings  shall  be  decided  on  the  following  point
system:

-‐ One  point  per  game  win  (i.e.  a  team  can  receive  a  maximum  of  3  points
in  one  match,  also,  the  losing  team  can  receive  a  maximum  of  1  point.)

2. Playoff  games  will  follow  the  playoff  bracket  provided  and  will  be  single
elimination  (the  best  of  the  3  games  wins  the  match).

These  rules  are  accurate  as  of  March  1st  2011.
