Pertanyaan :

1. Why a DC motor starter is called 3 point starter

Jawab:
Beacuse this 3 point starter has three points to save the
motor.
1) over load protection
2) no volt protection
3) starting huge currect protection

DC motor starter is called 3 point starter bcoz only 3

terminal (L,A,F)are available from starter.These 3
terminal L(line),A(armature),F(field) must b connected to
supply terminal, motar armatuer terminal, and shunt field
terminal.

Actually Dc motor starter are classified as two point

starter, three point starter and four point starter.
Three point starter is used in case of Shunt motor(some
cases this can be used compound motor also)Four point
starter is mainly used in compound motor.
Two point starter is used in series motor in order to
make the motor to run in safe manner. Three points
denotes Line terminal.field terminal and armature
terminal in which three points are connected. three
points L,A F. that is the main reason

In an dc motor have 1.armature

2.field
3.supply
in an 3point starter have 3point(L A F ), it limits
starting armeture current.because armeture is very low
resistence.
that way adding resistace series with the armature 3
point starter should be used.

the main purpose of using a three point starter is

to limit the starting armature current.......This is
because dc motor the initial voltage difference is less
so high current passes through the armature windings
which is not a desired factor. When we use a 3 point
starter it slowly induces the back emf in motor so that
the voltage difference is less and rate of current flow
is less, so the motor doesnt get spoiled

a three point starter is onely usst four three point

(l,f,a) line, field, armature. so itis called as three
point starter

dc motor starter is called 3 point starter it has three

terminal (L A F)(LINE,ARMATURE,FIELD) IT USED INSHUNT
MOTOR

because it has three terminals line, field, armature.these

three terminals are connected to their respective ones in
a motor.

Because they have three terminals namely line field and

armature. they are connected with the motor respectively,

because it has three terminals i.e;'l' 'f' 'a'

'l' is connected to supply
'f' is connected to feild circuit
'a' is connected to armature

it has three terminals l,f,a namely

l=line current
f=field current
a=amruture
it is connected dc motors .it is used shunt motors.it
protocts overload volts ect.

because of armiture wdg has less resistance if total

voltage is given directly to a arm. wdg.the arm. may
damage, so the three point startor is used to reduce the
damage,by decreasing the resistance and increasing the
voltage slowly.
this is called as three point starter because three
points L,A and F are brought out for the external
connection.
Point L:it is the line terminal and should be connected
to the dc supply.
point A:it is to be connected to the armature winding.
point F:it is to be connected to the feild winding.

because in three pt starter, there are three p.t which are

as follows
1)Line:-(L)
2)Field:-(f)
3)Armature:-(A)
above three pt act in dc motor&remaining starting
resistance is connected in series with armature.

3 POINT DC STARTER
3 point DC starter is a unit intended to limit the
starting current in a DC circuit. This starter is a must
for any DC motor applications. This starter has three
functions.
(a) To provide series resistance in a DC circuit when
this starter is in START position. I.e. In STARTposition
full resistance is included, and is reduced to zero ohms
when the handle is moved to ON position, in discrete
steps. The starter is held in ON position by an
electromagnet. At this ON position the DC circuit gets
its full current from the DC Rectifier unit. In the case
of a DC motor, this is
connected in series with the armature circuit, to limit
the starting current and eventually this resistance is
CUTOUT, from the circuit. There by enabling the motor to
run at it’s full armature current. Therefore this starter
acts as a first order protection circuit, in between a DC
rectifier unit and the DC circuit.
(b) No Volt Coil (NVC) – This is normally connected to
Field circuit in a DC motor. In case of a failure in
current in this circuit, for any reason, namely
accidental tripping, or unintentional break in field
circuit, this coil will provide a signal to the
electromechanically held arm (handle) to release, and the
starter is switched to OFF position, thereby providing
safety to the system.
(c) Over Load (OL) release switch – This is connected in
series with the armature circuit. In case of current
beyond the rated current of this coil in the circuit,
this automatically trips the electromagnet, which is
holding the handle in ON position. Thereby tripping the
starter from being over loaded
