New taste of lagundi

Abstract:

Carbocisteine is a kind of medicine who can cure cough. Mucolytic medicines, such as carbocisteine, can
be helpful for people with a long-term respiratory disease such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
(COPD). Carbocisteine works by making phlegm (mucus) less thick and sticky, and therefore easier to
cough up. This investigatory project that we made shows that we can make our own cough reliever
without spending a lot of money and we use herbal plants instead of chemicals. It is much affordable if
you have a lagundi plant (vitex negudo l.) in your backyard. We add brown sugar so that the syrup will
have a sweet taste.

Chapter I
Introduction and background of the Study:

Many people, especially those who are poor who cannot afford to buy very expensive medicine when
they are sick, they don’t just buy the medicines they need, they wait for some miracles that they are going
to be cured, but that is so impossible. How can they solve it? Well we suggest them to use the herbal plant
lagundi (nitex negundo l.) so that their cough will be cured or it will heal itself because we traditional use
this. In making our own carbocisteine we can prevent spending for buying gold priced medicines. The
ingredients we use are water, lagundi leaves, arnibal (brown sugar) and vinegar. We used arnibal because
it is sweeter than white sugar.

Statement of the Problem:

This study ought to answer the following problems:

1. Can we produce our own carbocistine out of lagundi leaves, and arnibal?
2. Is the carbocisteine effective?
3. Is the vinegar an effective preservative?

Formation of the Hypothesis:

1. We can produce lagundi syrup out of lagundi leaves, brown sugar, and vinegar.
2. The lagundi syrup is safe to drink and it’s affordable
3. Lagundi leaves are the best preservative for lagundi syrup.

Significance of the study:

The significance of the study is that we can produce lagundi syrup without wasting much time and
money. For example your house is very far from drug stores and there is no available lagundi syrup in the
store near your house and you barely need lagundi syrup for emergency. You can produce lagundi syrup
by yourselves instead of traveling very far from your house to the drug store just to buy expensive lagundi
syrup, this project can help not only the students but also for others.

Scope and Delimitation:

This study has the following scope and delimitation.

Lagundi

Methodology:

Procedure:

1. Boiled lagundi leaves

Prepare all the materials needed. After preparing, wash the lagundi leaves then, put it in the casserole and
add water. Put the casserole in the stove when the water is already boiled. Remove the casserole in the
stove. After removing, strain the lagundi leaves then it’s ready to go to the next procedure.

2. Brown sugar and vinegar

Prepare all the materials needed. Put the brown sugar in the casserole; put the casserole in the stove. Then
add 2 glass of water. When the sugar was melted, add vinegar. When it is boiled, add the essence of
lagundi leaves. Lastly, when boiled, remove the casserole from the stove.

Direction of using:

The dosage of flavored lagundi, depends on your own condition, if it’s not already bad, we recommend to
take one glass of flavored lagundi a day, but if it is too bad, then consult the doctor.

The research design:

-this study was started on November 22, 2019

-we made the product last November 27, 2019

-we finished the paperwork last November 28, 2019

Statistical treatment:

In all trial that we’ve made, we discover that our own product of boiled lagundi is very useful. We didn’t
expect that our boiled lagundi can cure our friend’s disease without spending thousands of pesos. So this
boiled lagundi is very suitable not only in our province but including the whole world.

Chapter IV

Analysis of Data:

1. For the first time we conduct an experiment. We are not satisfied in the syrup we made. It spoiled after
1 day.
2. Second time we made a syrup, we are more satisfied with the syrup that the first and it didn’t spoiled
after one day.

How effective:

Base on the study, we have done almost 80% this is proven use a cure/medicine for cough. Studies have
shown benefit through reduction of coughing and relaxation of the bronchial smooth muscles.
Lagundi has been proven to be an effective analgesic and antitussive (prepared as a pleasant
tasting cough syrup) and has been considered as a replacement for dextromethorphan in the
public health system. The benefit through reduction of coughing and relaxation of the bronchial
smooth muscles.
Suggestion:

Base on the people we asked what they suggested or their opinion to the product we made, they said that
it was a great idea for kids to enjoy especially to those kids who are afraid to drink boiled lagundi leaves
because for them, boiled lagundi leaves are bitter, but they said this is still very useful idea.

Discussion:

Well, base on the studies we have done, proven impact and preffered by people, aside from avoiding the
expenses, it is also easy to find in the backyard. And last, human’s safety is certain here because there are
no chemical substances that can harm the human body.

Chapter V

Summary:

We can produce a carbocisteine by lagundi leaves, brown sugar and vinegar. Vinegar is the best
preservative. In this project sugar is the best flavoring but the taste of our carbocisteine is not good
because it is sweet, sour and bitter. The three kinds of flavors were combined. Through this Science
investigatory project, we can produce affordable and safe carbocisteine because the ingredients we used
are non-toxic in short because it has no chemical substances around. This project can be an answer to
peoples who supper from cough.

Conclusion:

After the study had been done, the following conclusions were made.

1. We can produce carbocisteine lagundi syrup out of lagundi leaves, sugar and vinegar.
2. The produced lagundi syrup is safe to use since it does not contain any toxic chemicals.
3. The vinegar is the best preservative for carbocisteine.

Recommendation:

The following recommendation were given.

1. Perform further study in producing flavors to the carbocisteine

2. Test other preservative to prolong the life of the lagundi syrup.
3. Do further study to improve the quality of the syrup made.
