1.A. Installation of ERwin 4.0 - Patch 1
-------------------------------------------------------------
If you previously installed a version of ERwin 4.0, the ERwin 4.0 - Patch 1 setu
p program detects the presence of the previous version and automatically install
s the necessary patch files.
The setup program installs only the files that are updated for the patch. All ot
her files remain intact and unchanged. The setup program will not delete or chan
ge any files that you created including those with the following extensions: .er
1, .nsm, .dsm, .xml or .sql files.
If you intend to share your models with others, we recommend that Patch 1 is ins
talled on all workstations in which the model may be saved and opened.
If you save an ERwin 4.0 model after installing Patch 1 and later open that mode
l in a pre-Patch 1 version of ERwin 4.0, you may notice an issue regarding forei
gn keys. Specifically, if a Supertype/Subtype Identity Transform was reversed, t
he foreign keys (FKs) may be missing from the subtype tables. However, you can r
estore the missing foreign keys by deleting the supertype-subtype relationship a
nd recreating it.
1B. Installation of ERwin 4.0
------------------------------------------------------------
BEFORE YOU INSTALL (Applies to Beta Participants Only)
* Please delete the ERwin40.ini file, which is located in your Windows director
y (e.g., C:\Winnt). If you do not delete this file before installing ERwin 4.0,
the wrong icons may appear on the ERwin toolbar. The ERwin40.ini file will be re
created after you run ERwin 4.0 again.
Use the autorun setup program on the ERwin 4.0 CD to install the product. The au
torun setup program is automatically executed when you insert the CD in the driv
e. You can also execute it by selecting the
setup.exe program in the root folder of the ERwin 4.0 CD.

2A. ERwin 4.0 - Patch 1 Advisory Notes
-------------------------------------------------------------
2.A.1 Feature Support
* This Patch provides support for the import of models stored in XML format and
enhancements to the ERwin API. This new support is a requirement for integratio
n with Paradigm Plus, ERwin Examiner, and other third-party products.
* The output format of the XML file has been modified from the original GA vers
ion. The namespace declaration ERX has been removed to reduce the size of the ex
ported file. Some element names have been altered to clarify their meaning. A D
TD is provided describing the new file structure.
* ERwin 4.0 API is currently in Beta status and will be released with Service P
ack 1.
* Support for deriving a logical model from a physical model is enabled with th
is patch.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

2B. ERwin 4.0 - Advisory Notes
------------------------------------------------------------------
* ERwin 4.0 has been validated on: Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98 (f
irst and second editions), Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows Millennium
Edition, and Microsoft Windows NT
4.0 (service packs 5 and 6).
* This version of ERwin 4.0 is NOT ModelMart enabled. ERwin will support ModelMa
rt 4.0 when ModelMart 4.0 is Generally Available.
* Save As 3.5.2 is supported in ERwin 4.0. Several points to consider when you s
ave an ERwin 4.0 data model in ERwin 3.5.2 format are:
- Any new ERwin 4.0 objects or properties, such as transformed objects, drawing
objects, model and object history records, source model links, naming and data s
tandards, summary tables, alternate keys, and report templates will not be prese
rved.
- Powerbuilder and Visual Basic will not be supported in ERwin 4.0; therefore, t
hese properties will not be processed. (See the note about Powerbuilder and Visu
al Basic below.)
- ERwin 3.5.2 models saved in ERwin 4.0, and subsequently saved as 3.5.2 models,
will have limited ModelMart 3.0.2 capability.
- You can use the Save As 3.5.2 feature only with an ERwin 4.0 logical/physical
model. If you have an ERwin 4.0 logical-only or physical-only model, use the Der
ive New Model feature to create a logical/physical model first.
* Save as 3.5.2 Known Problems:
- Errors may occur if using Save as 3.5.2 with models imported from Oracle Desig
ner 2000.
- Under some conditions UDP values are not properly preserved.
- By design, Save as 3.5.2 works only with logical/physical models. When you att
empt to Save as 3.5.2 with a logical-only or physical-only model, you will see a
n informational message.
* ERwin 4.0 assigns a unique model identifier to each model that you create in E
Rwin 4.0. The model identifier is an internal tracking number that ERwin 4.0 use
s to identify model objects and facilitates
Complete Compare, Sync with Model Source, and the updates to the History record.
Use the Save as New Model feature to save an existing ERwin 4.0 model with a ne
w model identifier as well as a new name.
* ERwin ERX output is replaced with a new XML format output file. This XML forma
t provides access to all data within an ERwin model and is based on the ERwin 4.
0 metamodel. New options have been added to the
File Save As and Open dialogs to support the reading and writing of files in XML
format. At release time, there was a known problem with reading XML format file
s.
(* Note: This problem has been resolved in Patch 1 and support will be available
via a web download. If you need this support it will be available as a patch fr
om http://support.ca.com/erwin_supp.html.)
* When you Complete Compare two models of different target servers, the followin
g message is displayed after the first step of the wizard: "The target DBMS for
(file name) is different from that of the current
diagram. Do you want to change it to the current value before comparing?" If you
choose NO, the target servers for both models will be switched temporarily to O
DBC for the purpose of compare."
Then you have three options to choose from:
1) YES - will result in changing the target server of the target model to match
the current model
2) NO - will temporarily change the target server for both models to ODBC (gener
ic physical)
3) CANCEL - will cancel Complete Compare
* When you Complete Compare two models and the target model is not an ERwin 4.0
model (probably an ERwin 3.5.2 model) and has never been opened in ERwin 4.0, on
ly the Update Current option is enabled in
the first step of the wizard. ERwin 4.0 cannot export changes to an ERwin 3.5.2
model.
* Transforms fall into two general classes:
- Simple transforms include link column copy, supertype-subtype identity and man
y-to-many association tables.
- Complex transforms include Two Table Roll Up, Two table Roll Down, Supertype-S
ubtype Roll Up, Supertype - Subtype Roll Down, Vertical and Horizontal Partition
ing.
* Complex transforms cannot be applied after another complex transform. You can
only apply the second transform if you first resolve or reverse the prior trans
forms applied to the participating objects.
* This version of ERwin 4.0 supports DB2 UDB 5.2 and DB2 UDB 6 summary tables. W
hen DB2 is selected as the target server, an additional tool is added to the ERw
in toolbox, which you can use to create a summary table. In addition, you can cr
eate a summary table using the Model Explorer. Refer to ERwin Online Help for mo
re information about DB2 summary tables.
* Support for Power Builder and Visual Basic is stabilized at ERwin 3.5.2 and wi
ll not be provided in ERwin 4.0.
* Support for ERwin Data Dictionary is stabilized at ERwin 3.5.2 and will not be
provided in ERwin 4.0.
* ERwin Online Help
You can read about the new features in ERwin 4.0 by choosing "What's New" on the
Help menu. Use the WinHelp Index and Find tabs to search for information.
* ERwin Online Tutorial
The ERwin 4.0 tutorial is currently under construction and will be available aft
er General Availability.
