Jammers enews
Is published to inform interested people of events,
CD launches, jam sessions, to review past sessions, to
promote events being put on by Jammers,
encourage people to get involved in live
performance and to provide an iinformative and
friendly network for musicians and followers of jazz.
This jams feature a blend of accomplished musicians
and those beginning their jamming careers. A great
opportunity to drop in, meet other musicians, blow
your heart out on your favourite tune or kick back
and listen in. The music may be good, bad or
bebop, swing, blues, latin or lousy – anything can
happen and often does! All are welcome. Bring
charts.
Friday at the Leinster

The usual crew turned up Tony, Frank, Keith Jack
and Anne. Nicely augmented by Kevin (guitar), Tim
(Saxes) and David (Bass). Music happening from
6.00 to 11.00 and a good time had by all.

There's a cat on the roof: it isn't hot, it isn't tin but it is
definitely a cat. There were jazzisti at the Leinster,
they probably weren't hot, it may not have been
jazz, but it was definitely the Leinster.... and all for a
Sunday arvo jazz jam session...

I got there late after a gig in sunny salubrious

Warrandyte, to hear young Emily singing up a storm
as well as an octave on Summertime, Bob at the
piano, Frank, is -Don -is -good on guitar, Peter on sax
and Captain Col stressin' at the helm - in other words
the usual state of mellow chaos, in a variety of keys
and tempos (tempi?).

Debbie sang, Lailah sang (but not whilst I was there),

Sandro sang, Malcolm played the sax (but not whilst
I was there) and then the drums, in the absence of Al
(I want to be Bluddy Rich) who wasn't there, possibly
one of the greatest drummers in the Western world,
possibly not. Get better soon. But I digress.
The afternoon then took on a slightly surreal flavour
with the arrival of the combination Hen's Bucks party,
staggering in the key of inebriate, and some fine
singing ensued, almost some of it in the right key,
and occasionally with the lyrics and melody of the
same song, at the same time. It doesn't get any
better than that, does it? We all wish it did, but you
can't have everything.

The Morris-Ward Combo featuring Annie Smith will
be playing in the Community Centre on Sunday 12
March at 9-45pm at the Inverloch Jazz Festival.
They are only programmed for the one set at the
Festival so make sure to get in there before it gets
crowded. We have an exciting set for you.I will also
be playing Trombone with the Cut-n-Run Big Band
and also the Westingport Community Band in the
Marquee on Sunday and also the Dar-e-Beats Big
Band on Sunday.

A pianist and banjo or guitar players are needed
for a weekly trad jazz jam. Players of other
instruments and vocalists are also most welcome.
We generally roster the drummers and pianists (one
of each at a time) but everyone else is welcome to
turn up. Bring your own chord books/charts if you
need them. No audience, just a fun jam.

Morrison leads his talented band through a soulful,
swinging and funky selection of standards and
originals, spiced with humour and a real upbeat feel.
Extraordinary virtuosity from all concerned, but
especially the man out front, a titan of the trumpet
and trombone and about a dozen other instruments
too! James works regularly with other international
jazz stars in Europe, most recently, with four-time
Grammy winner Lalo Schifrin. This show will take you
on an entertaining musical journey of discovery.
Louis Armstrong, Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald are
just some of the influences you will be exposed to.

Penny School in Maldon looking for acts to perform
2.30pm Sundays
I went to a performance by Doug Owen at the
Penny School in Maldon and talking to the owner
and manager, Barry Vieth is or was a big band
muso and organiser. It is a good venue and I
believe Barry and his wife Marilyn are good
employers of musos. They have an excellent grand
piano. I have seen Jan Preston (piano), Miles White
(guitar) and Mark Hannaford (piano) play there.
The venue probably suits smaller groups best. I
thought you might be able to pass the word out to
people looking for gigs. It’s about an hour and a
half from Melb. They are also looking to attract
audiences from Melbourne
