Take a guess?
If you guessed Opheim from the photo in
Thursday’s Buzz, you are correct. Well, partially correct
because it was in Opheim. The home of the Vikings
has lost another landmark and cremation has taken
place.
Grain elevators along the abandoned Burlington
Northern track are disappearing one at a time. Tthere
were once four elevators in Opheim: The Ruffcorn,
The McCabe, The GTA and The Farmers Elevator.
Over the years, one by one they went down until there
was just one. This elevator was owned by PRO Co-
op and due to liability concerns it was taken down on
Monday of last week. These dilapidated, though sturdy
structures don’t go down without a fight. This one lost
the battle with K&S Excavation (Kent Hubbard). After
much preliminary work and pushing with the track hoe
it tilted, then a bit more and stopped before it finally fell
to the ground. On Tuesday the annex was taken down,
and the cleanup started. A pit was dug and the remains
were pushed in and burned. By Friday evening, there
was just a pile of scrap iron left to clean up. The north
side of the elevator had GTA the Co-op Way painted
over what looked like was originally International. The
south side still had International painted on its side.
These old elevators probably date back to around
1926 or shortly thereafter, when the railroad came into
