Present continuous review


Remember how we use the present continuous.
Is John playing tennis? No, John isn’t playing tennis. He is playing badminton.
Is Allan swimming? Yes, Allan is swimming.
What is the man doing? The man is riding a horse.
What is the teacher doing? He is eating a banana.

Can for ability


Can is used to show ability in the present and future.
Alice can sing a song. Alice can’t sing a song.
Her mother can play tennis. Her mother can’t play tennis.
Her father can exercise well Her father cannot exercise well.

The positive form is Subject + can + main verb + object


Tom can climb a tree.

The negative form is Subject + cannot / can’t + main verb + object


Tom can’t climb a tree.

Can for permission


We use can for permission to show it is all right to do something or or
we can use can’t to show it is not all right to do something.
Joyce can drive a car. She has her license.
It is okay for Joyce to drive a car because she has a license.
Andrew can’t drive a car. He doesn’t have his license.
It is not okay for Andrew to drive a car. He has the ability to drive, but he doesn’t have
permission.

We use can for permission in the same form we use can for ability.
The positive form is Subject + can + verb + object
Lucy can wear lipstick. She is a teenager.

The negative form is Subject + can’t + verb + object
Amy can’t wear lipstick. She is a baby.

Pronunciation of can and can’t


When we say can, it usually sounds like c’n.
I can do it. (I c’n do it)
She can come tomorrow. (she c’n come)

When we say can’t, it is clear and strong.


I can’t do it.
She can’t come tomorrow.

The modal verb should


Should means it is a good idea to do something. Shouldn’t means it is not a good ›dea to do
something.
I am tired. I should go to bed.
The students have a quiz tomorrow. They shouldn’t play football tonight.
My mother is ill. She should not exercise this morning.
He should put the key in his pocket. He always forgets it.
