Experimental Proof of Tellegen’s Theorem

Objective:
To apply the Tellegen’s Theorem on a physical circuit.

FOR SAME RESISTORS (R1=R2=R3=100ohm):

CIRCUIT DIGRAM:
TABLE:
R1=R2=R3=100Ω
Total current
Vs V1 V2 V3 I1 I2 I3
Is
5V 33.3mA 3.33V 1.67V 1.67V 33.3mA 16.7mA 16.7mA

5V Vs x Is V1 x I1 V2 x I2 V3 x I3
5V =5V*33.3mA =3.33V*33.3mA =1.67V*16.7mA =1.67V*16.7mA
=166.5mW =110.9mW =27.8mW =27.8mW

According to Tellegen’s Theorem:

N

∑ V k ik=0
k =1

Or in other words we can also write this for given three resistors as

Ps = P1 + P2 + P3
AS P=IV so put value
IsVS = I1V1 + I2V2 + I3V3
Now put value from above table:

5V*33.3mA = 3.33V*33.3mA + 1.67V*16.7mA + 1.67V*16.7mA

166.5mW = 110.9mW + 27.8mW + 27.8mW

So,
166.5mW = 166.5mW
So tellegen theorem proved for same resistors.
FOR DIFFERENT RESISTORS (R1=100Ω, R2 =150Ω, R3 = 1KΩ):
CIRCUIT DIGRAM:

TABLE:
R1=100Ω R2=150Ω R3=1KΩ

Total current
Vs V1 V2 V3 I1 I2 I3
Is
5V 21.7mA 2.17V 2.83V 2.83V 21.7mA 18.9mA 2.83mA

5V Vs x Is V1 x I1 V2 x I2 V3 x I3
5V =5V*21.7mA =2.17V*21.7mA =2.83*18.9mA =2.83V*2.83mA
=108.5mW =47.09mW =53.49mW = 8.009mW
According to Tellegen’s Theorem:
N

∑ V k ik=0
k =1

Or in other words we can also write this for given three resistors as

Ps = P1 + P2 + P3
AS P=IV so put value
IsVS = I1V1 + I2V2 + I3V3
Now put value from above table:

5V*21.7mA = 2.17V*21.7mA + 2.83V*18.9mA + 2.83V*2.83mA

108.5mW = 47.09mW + 53.49mW + 8.009mW

So,
108.5mW = 108.5mW
So tellegen theorem proved for different resistors.
