THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME EMMANUEL

READING: Matt 1:18-23

18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before
they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to
put her away privily.
20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying,
Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the
Holy Ghost.
21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their
sins.
22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,
23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel,
which being interpreted is, God with us.

I. THE SON OF GOD TOOK HUMAN FORM TO DWELL AMONG US.

A. Jesus was human just as we are.
1. John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the
glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

2. Phil 2:5-7 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God,
thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him
the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:

3. Matt 8:20 And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the
Son of man hath not where to lay his head.

4. Matt 9:6 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith
he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house.

5. John 19:33-34 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his
legs: But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and
water.

B. Jesus still was, is, and will ever be God.

1. John 1:1-2 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was
God. The same was in the beginning with God.

2. Rev 1:8 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which
was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

C. Being human, however, He faced – and overcame – the temptations of this world.
1. Heb 4:14-16 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the
Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched
with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let
us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in
time of need.

D. Jesus Christ left this world to ascend back into heaven – but made a great promise.
1. Matt 28:18-20 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven
and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the
Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you:
and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

II. HOW CAN JESUS CHRIST BE WITH US ALWAYS, EVEN UNTO THE END OF THE WORLD?
A. When we assemble.
1. Matt 18:20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of
them.

2. 1 Cor 11:23-25 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord
Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it,
and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the
same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my
blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.

B. As long as we have the truth. [Forever]

1. John 14:5-6 Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know
the way? Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the
Father, but by me.

2. 2 John 2-3 For the truth's sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever. Grace be
with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father,
in truth and love.

C. As long as we have the Word.

1. 1 Peter 1:25 But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the
gospel is preached unto you.

D. As long as we love.
1. 1 John 4:12-16 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and
his love is perfected in us. Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given
us of his Spirit. And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the
world. Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.
And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in
love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

E. As long as there are Christians.

1. Acts 11:25-26 Then departed Barnabas to Tarsus, for to seek Saul: And when he had found him, he
brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the
church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.

2. Acts 26:28 Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian .

3. 1 Peter 4:16 Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God
on this behalf.

4. Christians are those who obey Christ and Christ is in them.

a. 1 John 3:24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And
hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

b. Col 1:26-27 Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is
made manifest to his saints: To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of
this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

5. Christians are dwellers in an everlasting kingdom.

a. Ps 145:13 Thy kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and thy dominion endureth
throughout all generations.

b. Dan 4:3 How great are his signs! and how mighty are his wonders! his kingdom is an
everlasting kingdom, and his dominion is from generation to generation.

c. 2 Peter 1:11 For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting
kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
