HELENA- Last week, the House passed our main
budget bill (House Bill 2) to fund state government
for the next two years. It will now go to the Senate for
further consideration.
As it stands, it is one of the most responsible
state budgets that we have seen in recent history and
comes in well below the maximum threshold that
conservative think-tanks have set for a conservative
Montana budget. It adequately funds state government
and gives Governor Gianforte the tools that he needs
to continue finding efficiencies in state agencies.
A leadership priority bill passed to strengthen
election security. Senate Bill 169 is a voter ID bill that
ensures ballots are being legally cast by the person
whose name is on the ballot. This is one of several
elections bills that will make our state one of the
strongest in the nation for election integrity.
We passed a bill from the Chairman of the House
Education Committee which will expand education
options for Montana families. House Bill 279
increases the maximum tax credit for Montana’s K-12
scholarship programs, creating more scholarships for
families to be able to access educational services that
fit the individual needs of their child. This bill will

awaiting a commissioning
date but was officially
launched earlier this
month. Later this week the
captain of the boat himself
will join Governor Greg
Gianforte (R-MT) for an
update from the Montana
state capitol.
At 5 p.m. this
Wednesday the state’s
legislative leadership is
hosting a special event
to hear an update on the
future of the USS Montana
and her crew from Captain
Michael Delaney. Governor
Gianforte will introduce
Delaney who will be
speaking remotely due to
the intense construction
and training schedule for
the crew.
The event will be held
in the Old Supreme Court
Chamber and will feature
the ship’s bell that will be
presented to the crew upon
commissioning, according
to the USS Montana
Committee.

Aging Infrastructure
People of my age are suffering
from aging infrastructure.
Things like hips and knees need
replacement and kidneys need to
be removed or added while gall bladders
need to be removed. Dentures for the delight of the
grandkids! Aging infrastructure!
Now that I have that out of the way I need to tell you
about this United States Secretary of Transportation Pete
Buttigieg...you know, the wife of his husband Chasten
James Glezman Buttigieg. This Biden choice says he can
raise a lot of money to repair or replace our national
aging infrastructure by installing a device in everyone’s
auto, pickup, electric car, semi, murdercycle and every
other vehicular vehicle known to man that will measure
the miles that particular vehicle has run and charge
the owner a mileage tax. I suppose this would apply
to trucking companies, taxi owners, Uber Uberists and
the occasional lawn-mower-engine-powered bicycle.
School buses too? Police cars and ambulances as well?
How about the aviation industry? And can NASA
really afford a mileage tax on extra-terrestrial vehicles
traveling to the Moon or Jupiter?
When I was writing Hinsdale Raider sports it wasn’t
uncommon for me to pile on 10,000 miles a year what
with all the year-end tournaments and far-away track
meets. And the propensity of the State High School
Sports Association to hold the girls state BB tournament
in Hamilton! Nice facility but ugly miles! Especially for
those folks who follow the MonDak Thunder.
There is already a tax on the miles one drives. It’s
called a gas tax and it’s added to the price of a gallon of
gas at the pump. I think Montana has a 27 cent state tax
and then the federal 18.4 cpg tax on gasoline and 24.3
cpg on diesel fuel. You do the math.
Your fuel consumption is based on how many miles
you travel, road conditions, how fast you drive and
wind conditions. So in fact, we are already being taxed
on how many miles we drive so Mrs. Buttigieg is simply
adding more cents to the fuel tax. Why not just say that?
Because that would be too simple and furthermore,
people would be more prone to complaining about the
rise in fuel tax at the pump and less prone to complain
about a “new” mostly hidden tax on fuel for the purpose
of building better bridges and roads.
I really don’t like the idea of a government
sponsored mileage-measuring device in my pickup. Too
invasive and too Big Brother. We have enough of both
of those items. The reason Buttigieg wants to do this is
simply to keep watch on the citizenry of the once free
United States or soon to be the Estados Unidos if Senor
Biden gets his way and if we let him get away with his
plan for a “new” Estados Unidos.
Pennsylvania has the highest gas tax in the nation
of 0.59 per gallon while Alaska has the lowest with 0.144
cents per gallon.
And Hatch, New Mexico has what I found to be, the
most crooked police and the most crooked merchants
if one happens to run amok of a well hidden stop sign
and run afoul of a crooked auto repair shop. $85 for not
stopping, fully at a stop sign. Two New Mexico cars went
through the stop before me and the cop, sitting across
the street didn’t even take notice but he did take notice
of my Montana license plates which caused his red lights
and siren to go on. Then after getting 3 miles from town
on my way to Deming I noticed my engine was over-
heating so I returned to town and to the tire shop that
also “did repairs.” My thermostat was hay-wire. On my
pickup it’s a 10 minute, 4 dollar parts job. After tipping
the mechanic ten bucks I went inside to pay my bill.
Should have tipped last as my bill was $128.47. I didn’t
have the bad graces to ask the mechanic for the ten-spot
back.
So, if you are planning a trip to Tucson and planning
to take the cut-across from Hatch to Deming....don’t.
Avoid Hatch at all costs. Take the long way through Las
Cruces.

This event is being held in lieu of last Fall’s Firearm
Frenzy and our March Sponsor event. The Chapter
Committee felt that by moving to Shelter #1, people
could better social distance at their discretion.
This Event is open to the public!!
