CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

This chapter includes the background of the study, statement of the problem,

formulation of the null and alternative hypothesis, significance of the study, scope and

limitation, objective, definition of terms, and conceptual framework.

Introduction

Technology, as defined by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, is the application of

scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in the industry. But most of the time,

technology is referred to the gadgets that are commonly used in everyday such as

smartphones, laptops, tablets, computers, as well as those that gives power to these gadgets

such as the internet and world wide web. These gadgets that are previously used only for

entertainment and leisure purposes are now primarily used as a medium of teaching and

learning in the new normal way of education. The pandemic that the world currently

experiencing today had limited the people in doing usual activities, such as having face to

face classes inside schools/classrooms, but now, different strategies were conducted to

continue teaching the students with the aid of technology to continuously engage with the

teachers and to access various learning sources and materials. We all know that technology

is applied in the different sectors of the industry and in this case, the use of it should be

aligned with the educational needs and requirements of the users. (Karunathilake, 2020)

Technology today is now also used in the different fields of education such as in Medicine,

where education is now simulation based and makes use of the virtual reality which also
ST. JAMES SCHOOL OF SUBIC, INC.
Asinan Poblacion, Subic, Zambales
SY 2019-2020

already became an integral part of the said field (Karunathilake, 2020). Meanwhile, another

study also stated that highlighting the new normal approach of teaching, which makes use

of digital technology, is essential as it will enable decision makers and teachers to analyse

opportunities and challenges that teaching and learning process on the post-Covid 19

period might face (Cahyadi, 2020). Academic performance of the students is also said to

decline in online education as it will make the students less active and creative because

they will just spend most of their time at home without the teacher's guidance

(Murdaningsih, 2019). Moreover, another study conducted in a state college in the

Philippines mentioned that most of the faculty were uncertain how effective online

education may be in the midst of the pandemic as they had agreed that the students learn

less since there is also less student-teacher interaction, it can have more cases of academic

dishonesty, and because technology in online education is difficult to manage (Moralista,

et. al. 2020). A pedagogical research had also mentioned that strengthening and producing

more research and data monitorings on the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic to the

educational system of the Philippines could help in determining how educational institutes

should respond to the educational crisis it experiences (Toquero, 2020).

As students currently experiencing education in the new normal through the use

of technology, there is the need to know if the academic performance and learning progress

is affected by the use of the latter and whether if it is a big help or not. The research aims

to identify if the use of technology as a learning platform and medium has an impact to the

academic performance of the students. The research will also know how technology as a

learning tool can be described in different factors and if it helps to make the students
ST. JAMES SCHOOL OF SUBIC, INC.
Asinan Poblacion, Subic, Zambales
SY 2019-2020

achieve/hit their necessary learning targets and competencies. The study also covers about

the factors that affects the students’ use of technology and its effects to their learning.

Moreover, the research will also stand as a basis whether if the new normal way of

education truly educates the learners as the study will also cover the students’ performance

and satisfaction in regards to their education which is now mostly relying on technology.

Research Locale

The research will be conducted at Barangay Calapacuan, Subic, Zambales.

Situated at the southern part of the Subic Town, Barangay Calapacuan is one of

the 16 barangays of the said town. It homes to 14,307 people as of census in 2015 and takes

at least 13.66% of the population in the whole Subic town. The barangay is near to both

the sea and mountains, covering an area of approximately 514,157 meters squared. It is

also the most populated Barangay in the whole province (if cities are excluded) basing on

a census conducted in 2010. Most probably, in the previous generations, people residing in

the Barangay had their livelihoods based on fishing and farming, particularly on coconuts

and root crops. It is currently led by Barangay Captain Aida B. Lina. Barangay Calapacuan

continues to grow both in economy and population, given by the number of new business

establishments built here and the growing number of people in censuses conducted every

year.

The researcher currently resides at Barangay Calapacuan, and because of the

current circumstances that we have, the whole study would be conducted also at the

researcher’s home to ensure safety and to comply in line with the policies implemented by

the local and municipal government about the COVID-19 virus.

Conceptual/Theoretical Framework

With a limited sample of 32 students (given that the research only covers the students

of STEM-12 and of course, to ensure safety), this quantitative analysis focuses about how

technology affects the academic performance of the STEM-12 students in the time of the

new normal. The researcher had discovered that the academic performance of the students

and the learning approach or materials used by the instructor are directly and significantly

related to each other. The samples would be stratified upon the research process depending

on their response in the survey questionnaires to furtherly elaborate the results and come

up with an accurate result.

4.5 Certain distractions?

5. What are the impacts of technology to the academic performance of students in the

new normal?

Hypothesis

There is no significant impact given by technology in the academic performance of

the STEM-12 students in the new normal.

Scope and Delimitations

The study covers the impact of technology to the academic performance of the

Grade 12-STEM Students in the context of the new normal at St. James School of Subic,

Inc. The study will take approximately 4-5 months before being completed and reach a

particular conclusion. The research will also cover the factors that affects the students' use

of technology while learning and its effects on their academic performance. The

quantitative analysis will be done and conducted at Barangay Calapacuan, Subic,

Zambales.

The study disregards other more irrelevant information and topics on the research

such as the effects of technology to the behavior and attitude of the students and to their

personal perspectives and opinions. All sub-topics were created with relevance to the major
ST. JAMES SCHOOL OF SUBIC, INC.

SY 2019-2020

topic of the research which particulates on the academic performance and learning

process/progress of the students while using technology as a learning tool in the new

normal.

Significance of the Study

The results and findings of this study would be useful in improving the academic

performance of the STEM-12 students, as well as other students, in this time of the new

normal.

Thus, the researcher believes that this research is beneficial to the following:

Students. They will be aware about the impacts the technology gives to their

learning process and how they should use and handle it in their education.

Teachers. The teachers could have new knowledges on how they should use

technology as a learning platform in a more interactive way that can improve the academic

performance of the students and they could also identify if they are teaching effectively in

the new normal.

Administration. This research could be used as a basis of the whole faculty about

how learning in the new normal with the use of technology could be improved, giving them

the ability to formulate new techniques and approaches that will capture the students’

interest.

Parents. As they work together with the teachers in teaching the students, this

research can give the parents some insights on how their children gains progress in today’s

education in the new normal through the use of technology, giving also them a better
ST. JAMES SCHOOL OF SUBIC, INC.
Asinan Poblacion, Subic, Zambales
SY 2019-2020

understanding on the situation their children currently faces and have them also to create

some techniques and approaches that they can use in encouraging their children to continue

studying,

Community. In general, the whole community would be benefited by this research

as the results could be applied in general since almost all the students today depend on

technology in their learning, and once they learned about the findings of this study, they

may begin finding a way on how to improve their learning process by using technology in

a better way.

Definition of Terms

Academic performance. Pertains to the grades being received by the student

which reflects his/her performance in different subjects. It is used as a basis on how the

student performs on his/her classes.

Asynchronous Classes. Classes by which both the instructor and learner are

offline, and the learner is specifically answering the modules by his/her own or with the

help of his/her parents. There could be still communication between the learner and the

instructor, but it is only through chats in Facebook Messenger and without any virtual

conference.

Facebook Messenger. A messaging application developed by Facebook wherein

users could easily communicate with other users through simple chats or video calls. It is
ST. JAMES SCHOOL OF SUBIC, INC.
Asinan Poblacion, Subic, Zambales
SY 2019-2020

now also widely used in education, making it as the primary means of communication for

both the students and their teachers.

Google Classroom. A free web service developed by Google which streamlines

the process of sharing files between teachers and students. It is also a platform used by

schools to simplify creating, distributing, and evaluating assignments and other activities.

Google Meet. A video-communication application developed by Google which

enable users to face and talk with each other virtually in a way that it only consumes little

of the mobile internet data that the users have.

Learning Management System (LMS). A software application used in

administrating, tracking, delivering and automating of educational courses/materials to the

students. It is a widely used software in E-Learning, especially now in the new normal way

of education.

Learning Modalities. Types of approach that the students can freely choose

depending on what is appropriate for their situation and capacity. According to the

Department of Education (DepEd), learning modalities could be through Online Learning,

Modular Distance Learning, Blended Learning, Radio-Based Instruction and TV-Based

Instruction.

Learning Modules. Sheets containing the lessons, activities and tasks that the

students need to learn and understand. It also contains the competencies, learning targets

and some reminders that the students should always keep in mind.
ST. JAMES SCHOOL OF SUBIC, INC.
Asinan Poblacion, Subic, Zambales
SY 2019-2020

Modular Distance Learning. Learning approach used by the student is by having

learning modules that he/she would read and answer within a given period of time with

continuous distanced supervision by the teacher.

New normal. The norms practiced today at the time of the pandemic which are all

new and different from the norms before. This includes the practice of always wearing face

masks/shields whenever going out to prevent oneself from contracting the virus.

Online Learning. Learning approach used by the student is through online means

by using Google Classroom or the Learning Management System (LMS) of the school.

Modules and other more learning materials are uploaded on the internet which are made

accessible to the students.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). A strand in the

senior high school which integrates learnings in Science and Mathematics and is designed

for students who pursues studies related on these subjects.

Synchronous Classes. Classes by which both the instructor and the learners are

present and communicating with each other. This happens via online conferences in Google

Meet or Zoom wherein the instructor should check the progress of his/her students and also

teach them about some important points of their lesson.

Technology. The application of scientific knowledge in life. Also pertains to the

gadgets, appliances and devices that we use in everyday such as cellphones, televisions,

laptops, computer sets, the internet, etc.

Chapter 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter contains several studies that are similar and related to the topic of this

research. The following studies were found significant and helpful by the researcher in

creating his own study. Both foreign and local studies are included in this part, furtherly

elaborating similar concepts and topics that may help in addressing the problem and

answers in this research paper.

FOREIGN STUDIES

Even before, several new ways were already being considered and made on how to

deliver education to the students. This includes the use of technology, through the new

process of E-learning, wherein students are virtually learning through the use of computers,

laptops and other more gadgets that are made available to them. However, as time passed

by, E-learning was also replaced by Blended learning, which they say is a logical and

scientifically acceptable alternative to e-learning. It has higher yields, is less expensive,

and incorporates more sophisticated types of learning as it aims at interactive learning,

blending or mixing that of a teacher’s role in a traditional classroom with that in the virtual

one (Oweis, 2018).

As the pandemic arrived, most of the educational institutions had relied and

depended on both technology and blended learning to continue the education of the

students. Using the capacities offered by the different types of technology could really ease

the situation about the problem in the education of the students in the new normal, yet it
ST. JAMES SCHOOL OF SUBIC, INC.
Asinan Poblacion, Subic, Zambales
SY 2019-2020

still has significant hurdles which creates more equitable learning environments. There are

instances where communities experience inequalities in access — access to computers, to

reliable high-speed internet, and to the digital literacy and support that are required to take

advantage of online learning. Technology may be not the best way yet, but it could be

continuously harnessed until it becomes the best solution for the educational problem in the

new normal (Vahey, 2020).

Studies had also proved the significance of some softwares in learning. It is already

given that teachers really are not used in working in their homes because they have a field

profession, which also gives them to have a big, yet fast adjustment since they should cope

with the situation faster to furtherly develop new ways on how they can continue the

learning of the students. The new normal truly requires new routines and new ways of

working with the pandemic, accelerating the use of technology across all industries which

includes teaching. That is why it is considered that the internet, some softwares and gadgets

are significant in these times. Software, explicitly, allow teachers to set work for – or hold

online classes with – their students, and there are lots of tools available that use automated

quizzes and tests to make those lessons more engaging. (Gohil, 2020) These only shows

that schools abroad truly had relied on technology as their learning platform ever since

before the time of the new normal – as they had already considered technology as the new

normal in education (Pacheco, 2020).

LOCAL STUDIES

The country also experienced the same problem in terms of the education of the

students. Upon the sudden cancellation of classes due to the worsening number of cases of

COVID in the country, the Department of Education (DepEd) brought down an order
ST. JAMES SCHOOL OF SUBIC, INC.
Asinan Poblacion, Subic, Zambales
SY 2019-2020

instructing all teachers to come up with a learning continuity plan (LCP) which will outline

their approach in response to the current situation brought by the pandemic. Most

educational institutions had shifted to online learning, which on the other hand had created

a hot debate among different institutions, citing the poor conditions of most students in the

country. Still, most schools believe that the most viable solution is through online teaching

and learning. Though this platform challenges both the teachers and the students as it

occurs something new to them, it is still yet the only option the schools can safely take.

This shift to online learning was too sudden at a very short notice but academic institutions

have to strategize and accelerate new forms of teaching pedagogy. For Felter & Maizland

(2020), reopening of the schools at this stage is really expensive. Both private and public

educational institutions have the choice to pick different approaches or modalities which

may either be online, modular or blended and learning could either be synchronous and

asynchronous. This gave answer to the early problem of the country regarding students in

poor condition who cannot afford accessing the internet in everyday (Ancheta, 2020).

Another study pointed out how the curriculum could be reshaped considering the

new normal post - COVID-19 era. Having a new normal curriculum may adopt the

integration of content which makes the reduction of hours needed at studying all subjects

possible in the way that it will still address the curriculum expectations. Furthermore,

educational institutions are maximizing the use of technology, using it as a platform for

either online, modular or blended modality. Grading system in the new normal education

had also been changed by most institutions from quantitative to qualitative assessment

scales (Farrington, 2020). Though already supported by many, there are some who believe
ST. JAMES SCHOOL OF SUBIC, INC.
Asinan Poblacion, Subic, Zambales
SY 2019-2020

that this may affect the students in terms of having the motivation to strive for higher grades

(Dilanchyan, 2020). But as of now, no exact effects had been published regarding the

academic performance of the students in the new normal (Cahapay, 2020).

The right choice for a solution to overcome the problems in the new normal

education could be only achieved through collaboration, as stated by Tria (2020). Despite

still having no exact data whether certain modalities are effective enough in teaching the

students in the new normal, continuous research should be conducted. Higher education

needs to demonstrate competitiveness, effectiveness and efficiency by strengthening

research activities in the field of health and pandemic (Toquero, 2020). Since online

learning platforms and modalities are already made available and used in the country by

some schools and universities, it just only needs to be strengthened to lessen the problems

and challenges that it poses to both the teachers and students, especially at higher

educational institutions (HEIs) (Bao, 2020). Moreover, more ways could be considered in

making the education in new normal not only focused on pen and papers, like for instance,

performance tests could be done in subjects like Physical Education to still achieve the

competencies of the subject. The government firmly believes that the students’ learning in

our country should not be halted, thus, making use of different modalities to ensure the

continuous education of the students, though its quality and effectiveness is not highly

assured (Tria, 2020).

RELATION TO THE PRESENT STUDY

Literatures that are included in this part are all deemed important and related to the

study currently being done by the researcher. Since classes just reopened back in
ST. JAMES SCHOOL OF SUBIC, INC.
Asinan Poblacion, Subic, Zambales
SY 2019-2020

September 2020, no specific and concrete study had been conducted and done to identify

whether the education system today in the new normal which makes use of technology is

highly effective. Furthermore, to accurately identify the impacts given by technology on

the academic performance of the students in the new normal, the researcher wanted to study

previous and background information about the processes that the education system of both

the local and foreign schools had undergone, from experimenting probable ways and

choosing and finalizing several modalities that they will offer to the students. Having prior

knowledge about these events, studies and information could help the researcher to have a

wider understanding and perception regarding the results he may find after the data

gathering process.

As also implied by most of the literature above, it was explicitly stated to have more

future studies and research regarding the education in the new normal and in the post –

COVID-19 era. This is to find out whether if the modalities implemented in the students’

education are highly effective and advantageous or not.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This part provides presentation and description about the research methodology,

the respondents, construction and validation of the instruments, data gathering procedure

and the treatment of the data.

Research Method

This quantitative analysis will be done in a descriptive method wherein one or more

variables would be analyzed, together with their correlation with each other. Survey

questionnaires are used by the researcher to collect data. Results are utilized by the

researcher to identify the impacts of technology to the academic performance of the

students in the context of the new normal.

Descriptive research is widely used in research that has aims to either identify

characteristics, frequencies, trends, and categories. It is much useful when there is only

little to no information about the topic or problem. Unlike experimental research,

descriptive research only observes and measures the variables, and no manipulation is

done.

Respondents

The respondents are the 32 students of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and

Mathematics 12 (STEM-12) of St. James School of Subic, Inc. Specifically, there are 18

males and 14 females in the class.

ST. JAMES SCHOOL OF SUBIC, INC.
Asinan Poblacion, Subic, Zambales
SY 2019-2020

Instrument

The research instrument to be used are the survey questionnaires together with

integrated observations. The questionnaire is ensured to secure and protect all the

information related to the study, may it be personal or not, to respect the privacy of the

respondents.

Part I. Evokes the demographics of the respondents.

Part II. Identifies the impacts of technology to the academic performance in the

new normal education of the respondents.

Part III. Evaluates the comments and suggestions of the respondents.

Validation of Instrument

The survey questionnaire was created by the researcher with the research questions

used as a guidance to ensure that the questionnaire would be related to the research

questions and would help to answer the problems stated in this research.

Data Gathering Procedure

The data gathering procedure would be conducted through the use of survey

questionnaires that would be sent via messenger since having physical contact with the

respondents are quite risky and should be limited as much as possible. Results would be

used to identify the impacts of technology to the academic performance of the respondents

in the new normal. A short observation would be also done during online conferences to

ensure validity of the data.

Treatment of the Data

Descriptive statistics will be used in describing, analyzing and organizing the data.

The frequency distribution and percentage will be used to determine the profile of

the students on their Age, Gender, and General average on the previous quarter.

1. Percentage (%). This will be used to describe the distribution of the

respondents when grouped by the hundredths.

Formula:

% = f/N

Where:

% = Percentage

f = frequency

N = total number of responses

2. Weighted Mean (WX). This will be used to determine the overall

assessment on the impacts of technology to the academic performance of the respondents.
