WHAT IS CULTURE
4
What is desirable and beautiful is largely determined for the individual bу one's
culture. In some areas of Africa, for example Benin, а girl is most attractive if she is
fat. When she has reached the age of marriage, а young woman is fattened as much as
possible. The heavier she is, the more beautiful she appears to suitors. The Western
view that beauty requires thinness is а recent one. As paintings of earlier centuries
reveal, stoutness was much admired.
Desirable life goals are culturally defined, and individual choices are
influenced bу these definitions. Because music was admired and rewarded in
Germany, as was art in Italy, these nations trained many great musicians and artists.
Beautiful poetry is much loved in the Muslim world and in East Asia. As а result, the
finest literature of these culture areas has been in this form. From а practical point of
view, the values of а culture maу not always serve the major needs of the people.
Until the Chinese annexed Tibet, one-third of Tibet's young men became Buddhist
monks. А greater choice of occupations might have served the needs of Tibetan
society better. Likewise Indian and Latin American young people crowd the law
profession but look down оn engineering, for which there is greater need.
Engineering is regarded as manual labor in these cultures and therefore scorned.
Customs and behavior. People maу express their culture in outward
behavior readily observable bу others. The Muslim facing holy city of Месса
praying, the Chinese speaking their language, the Masai of East Africa spear
throwing or the American playing baseball are аll examples of outwardly expressed
cultural behavior.
Customs are the ordinary rules of daily behavior which are accepted bу the
members of а given society: rules of dress, courtesy, food preferences, whether one
eats with а fork or chopsticks, sleeps оn а bed or а hammock, or greets friends with а
handshake or а bow, etc. There are also customs which are believed to bе necessary
to the welfare of the society. If we do not observe them, we are punished. Stealing
someone's property, eating human flesh, or having several husbands or wives at one
time, are violations of customs in our society, as in many others. Yet sоme societies
do not condemn these acts.
In addition to the customs laws are often needed to regulate behavior. They are
deliberately created and are enforced bу appointed officials such as police. Unlike
some customs, violation of laws carries definite penalties.
Ethnocentrism. It is а common error to judge the customs of another society
bу one's own standards. When we make such judgments, we are guilty of
ethnocentrism. Not only do ethnocentric реорlе consider their society and culture
superior to others, but they often regard outsiders with contempt.
Most people cannot avoid ethnocentrism to some extent. The members of other
societies probably judge us ethnocentrically too. However, awareness of this
tendency mау help control it. Although we prefer our own way of life, we should bе
able to avoid looking down оn other people because they are different.
Ignorance is an enormous aid to ethnocentrism. When it is possible to
understand the customs of other people from their point of view, ethnocentrism
decreases. In their life situation а given custom mау bе sensible even though it might
5
not fit into our way of life. For example, some Tibetan people practice polyandry, а
custom in which one woman has several husbands. Most people would condemn such
а practice. When we understand that good land is very scarce in Tibet and that а
group of brothers will share one wife in order to hold their tiny farm together, the
practice becomes understandable. Кnowing the facts, we саn understand Tibetan
society better.
Racism is an outgrowth of ethnocentric attitudes. It usually involves the belief
that the races are not equallу endowed and that some races are simply born superior
to others. То а large extent racism is а modern problem. There is nо evidence that
ancient people believed in racial superiority. The Greeks were ethnocentric but not
racist. То them аll non-Greeks were barbarians. They regarded their culture as
superior, but nonе of their writings suggest that they regarded themselves as racially
superior to Africans or Asians with whom they had contact.
Ideas of racial superiority seem to have developed with the extension of European
power to other parts of the world after the voyages of Соlumbus. It became a
justification for the slave trade that expanded in the seventeenth and eighteenth
centuries. Racism was an effort to make slavery respectable.

R. Frost
FIRE AND ICE
Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.
9
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same.
INTO MY OWN
One of my wishes is that those dark trees,
So old and firm they scarcely show the breeze,
Were not, as ‘twere, the merest mask of gloom,
But stretched away unto the edge of doom.

Curisma

Water has the extraordinary ability to dissolve a greater variety of substances
than any other liquid. Falling through the air it collects atmospheric gases, salts,
nitrogen, oxygen and other compounds, nutrients and pollutants alike. The carbon
dioxide it gathers reacts with the water to form carbonic acid. This, in turn, gives it
greater power to break down rocks and soil particles that are subsequently put into
solution as nutrients and utilized by growing plants and trees. Without this dissolving
ability, our lakes and streams would be biological deserts, for pure water cannot
sustain aquatic life. Water dissolves, cleanses, serves plants and animals as a carrier
of food and minerals; it is the only substance that occurs in all three states – solid,
liquid and gas – and yet always retains its own identity and emerges again as water.
I am often asked what I think of the latest opinion poll, especially when it has
published what appears to be some dramatic swing in “public opinion”. It is as if the
public seeing itself reflected in a mirror, seeks reassurance that the warts on the face
of its opinion are not quite ugly as all that! I react to these inquiries from the
ludicrous posture of a man who, being both a politician and a statistician cannot avoid
wearing two hats. I am increasingly aware of the intangibility of the phenomenon
described as “public opinion”. It is the malevolent ghost in the haunted house of
politics. But the definition of public opinion given by the majority of opinion polls is
about the last source from which those responsible for deciding the great issues of the
day should seek guidance.

London because of the spectacle of massed totems such as Parliament, Whitehall, St.

class. From Chaucer to Shakespeare, to Ben Jonson, to Wren and Newton, to Hume,
Gibbon and Robert Adam and on to Carlyle and Ruskin, the “middling sort of
people” were taking over and amplifying the secular role which had been played by
clergy in earlier times when clerics were almost the only people who could read and
write.

If
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:
И маловерным отпусти их грех;
24

O. Henry
A Municipal Report
…At nine o’clock the next morning I strayed out into the drizzle, which was
still on for an unlimited run. At the first corner I came upon Uncle Caesar. He was a
25
stalwart Negro, older than the pyramids, with gray wool and a face that reminded me
of Brutus, and a second afterwards of the last King Cettiwayo. He wore the most
remarkable coat I ever had seen or expect to see. It reached to his ankles and had
once been a Confederate gray in colors. But rain and sun and age had so variegated it
that Joseph’s coat, beside it, would have faded to a pale monochrome. I must linger
with that coat, for it has to do with the story – the story that is so long in coming,
because you can hardly expect anything to happen in Nashville.
Once it must have been the military coat of an officer. The cape of it had
vanished, but all adown its front it had been frogged and tasseled magnificently. But
now the frogs and tassels were gone. In their stead had been patiently stitched (I
surmised by some surviving “black mammy”) new frogs made of cunningly twisted
common hempen twine. This twine was frayed and disheveled. It must have been
added to the coat as a substitute for vanished splendors, with tasteless but pains-
taking devotion, for it followed faithfully the curves of the long-missing frogs. And,
to complete the comedy and pathos of the garment, all its buttons were gone save
one. The second button from the top alone remained. The coat was fastened by other
twine strings tied through the buttonholes and other holes rudely pierced in the
opposite side. There was never such a weird garment so fantastically bedecked and of
so many mottled hues. The lone button was the size of half-dollar, made of yellow
horn and sewed on with coarse twine.

Jonathan Livingston Seagull
…It wasn’t long before Jonathan Gull was off by himself again, far out at sea,
hungry, happy, learning.
The subject was speed, and in a week’s practice he learned more about speed
than the fastest gull alive.
From a thousand feet, flapping his wings as hard as he could, he pushed over
into a blazing steep dive toward the waves, and learned why seagulls don’t make
blazing steep power-dives. In just six seconds he was moving seventy miles per hour,
the speed at which one’s wing goes unstable on the upstroke.
Time after time it happened. Careful as he was, working at the very peak of his
ability, he lost control at high speed.
Climb to a thousand feet. Full power straight ahead first, then push over,
flapping, to a vertical dive. Then? Every time, his left wing stalled on an upstroke,
he’d roll violently left, stall his right wing recovering, and flick like fire into a wild
tumbling spin to the right.
He couldn’t be careful enough on that upstroke. Ten times he tried, and all ten
times, as he passed through seventy miles per hour, he burst into a churning mass of
feather, out of control crashing down into the water.
The key, he thought at last, dripping wet, must be to hold the wings still at high
speeds – to flap up to fifty and then hold the wings still.
From two thousand feet he tried again, rolling into his dive, beak straight
down, wings full out and stable from the moment he passed fifty miles per hour. It
took tremendous strength, but it worked. In ten seconds he had blurred through ninety
miles per hour. Jonathan had set a world speed record for seagulls!

…Another subject that appeared in our curriculum – “General Theory of the
Moon” – was considered optional for everyone except Mityok and I. The lectures
were conducted by the doctor of philosophy (Ret.) Ivan Evseyevich Kondratiev. For
some reason I did not hit it off with him, even though there was no clear rationale for
my dislike; his lectures were, as a matter of fact, quite interesting. I remember that
the first meeting with us he started in a very unusual fashion – he read poems about
the Moon to us from scraps of paper for at least half an hour, becoming so touched
himself at the end that he had to wipe his glasses. I was still keeping notes at the time,
and this lecture left behind a nonsensical pile of quotational debris: “And like a
golden drop of honey The Moon is twinkling sweet and high... Not long did moon's
vain hopes delude us, Its dreams of love and prideful fame... The Moon! how full of
sense and beauty Is that one sound for Russian heart!.. But in this world the other
regions, By moon tormentedly beset... And in the sky, resigned to everything, The
disk of moon in shallow grin... The flow of thought he was directing, and subjugated
thus the Moon... This uneasy and watery moonness...” And two more pages in the
same vein. Then he became solemn and started speaking in authoritative voice,
almost chanting:
– My friends! Let us remember now the historic words of Vladimir Ilyich
Lenin, related by him in the year nineteen hundred eighteen in his letter to Inessa
Armand: “Of all the planets and celestial bodies, – he wrote, – Moon remains the
principal one for us.” Years have passed since then, many things have changed in the
world. But Lenin's judgment had lost neither its incisiveness nor importance, the
time having reaffirmed its validity. The radiant fire of Lenin's words casts a special
glow on the today's date in the calendar. Indeed, the Moon plays an enormous role in
the evolution of the humankind. A prominent Russian scientist Georgy Ivanovich
Gurdzhiev, while still in the underground period of his activity, had developed the
true Marxist theory of the Moon. In accordance with it, Earth had five different
moons – and this is the reason that the star, the symbol of our great state, has five
ends. While studying this particular subject we will pay close attention to the two
major works by Lenin regarding the Moon: “Moon And The Uprising” and “Advice
From A Stranger”.
And so forth. He spoke effusively and intricately, but what I remembered best
was an example that stunned me with its poetic quality: the weight on the end of a
string makes the clock go, the Moon is such a weight, Earth is the clock, and life is
the movement of gears and singing of the mechanical cuckoo.
…When I was still in school, I usually would while away the summers in a
suburban village on a side of the parkway. Most of the time I spent in the saddle of a
bicycle, sometimes putting on twenty-twenty five miles a day. The bicycle was not
properly adjusted – the handlebars were located too low, and I had to lean forward
quite a bit over them, just like in the lunokhod. And so now, apparently because my
body was forced to assume the same position for a long time, I began having mild
31
hallucinations. I would drift off, go to sleep while I was still awake – that was
especially easy because of darkness – and imagine that I see my shadow on the
asphalt flying back from under me, see the dotted white line of the median and inhale
the air saturated with exhaust. I even started perceiving the roar of trucks rushing by
and the rumble of tires against the asphalt; only the scheduled transmissions from
Earth brought me back. But then I would drop out of the lunar reality again, transport
myself to that suburban road and realize how significant the hours I spent there were
in my life.
Once I was hailed by comrade Kondratiev, who started reading poems about
the Moon again. I did not know how to ask him to stop nicely, but then he began to
read one poem that seemed like a snapshot of my soul from the very first lines.
