Changing Business Environment

At a time when the world is becoming increasingly aware of how delicate our environment is, the
printing industry has implemented many changes to reduce its negative impact on the environment and
become more eco-conscious.

A large number of printing companies have chosen to go above and beyond environmental regulations
to become Green. Considering the current public attitude and movement towards Environmental
Awareness, this is not only a wise decision in terms of benefiting the environment, but good for
business as well.

What does being a "Green" Printing Company mean? There are several ways in which printing
companies can reduce waste, reduce or eliminate the use of harmful chemicals, and substantially lower
their negative impact on the environment. Many companies have implemented an Environmental
Management System (e.g. ISO 14001, EMAS), which demonstrates a real commitment to continually
improving their environmental performance.

PAPER

Almost everyone is aware of recycled paper and the amount of paper recycling is continually rising.
When compared to the use of virgin paper, the use of recycled paper substantially reduces water
consumption, the use of energy, air pollution, and water pollution.

Many printing companies have begun using recycled or recyclable paper that has been produced
specifically for the printing industry from sustainable managed sources such as a paper supplier
certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.

Yet another environmental impact of paper production is the use of chlorine to whiten the paper pulp.
Using chlorine produces Effluent, which is highly toxic to marine life. Many printers have begun using
Totally Chlorine Free (TCF) or Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) papers.

Inks

The use of Soy-Oil based inks also known as Vegetable-Oil based inks is a significant advancement in
the reduction of harmful chemicals used in the printing industry. Petroleum-based inks contain high
levels of solvents, which can leach into the water table when they are sent to landfills. Some petroleum-
based inks also contain toxic heavy metals.

Soy or Vegetable-based inks, unlike Petroleum-based inks, are a simple compound which means they
are much more biodegradable and renewable. These inks are much easier to remove from paper in the
recycling process, which means a reduction in the amount of energy needed to complete the recycling
process.

Soy based inks are much more biodegradable and renewable. They are much easier to remove from
paper in the recycling process, which means a reduction in the amount of energy needed to complete
the recycling process.

Aqueous coatings and laminates that are very biodegradable like Soy-based inks are being utilized by
more printing companies as well. AQ and UV coatings contain very low or trace amounts of Volatile
Organic Compounds (VOCs) which means less harmful components are used that can damage the
atmosphere.

The increased use of Digital Printing in place of traditional printing methods has had an environmental
impact. Many printing companies who implement digital printing technology use Dry Toner Ink which
is probably the most environmentally friendly ink being used by printers today. Dry Toner ink can be
easily removed from paper, so like soy ink, recycling is much more efficient. Dry Toners inks produce
virtually no VOCs and do not require chemicals for clean up.

Many printing companies that provide large format printing services use inkjet UV inks for such
printed items as banners, in store displays or trade show displays. Inkjet UV ink is very durable but not
very environmentally friendly. Bio-inks are just now reaching the large format market. As they become
more readily available, large format printing companies should start using them in place of inkjet UV
inks as a less hazardous and polluting alternative.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)

Conventional printing processes have historically resulted in the release of large quantities of Volatile
Organic Compounds known as VOCs. VOCs are very hazardous to people, animals and the
environment. They contaminate the soil and groundwater and contribute to air pollution. When released
into the air, VOCs produce greenhouse gas. By switching to Soy-based inks and Aqueous Coatings,
printing companies have been able to almost completely eliminate VOCs.

Alcohol Solutions

With the switch to Soy-based inks and Aqueous Coatings, many printing companies have begun using
Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) free or low content dampening solutions during the printing process. This is
another way printers are reducing VOC emissions into the environment.
Computer-To-Plate (CTP)

Many printing companies have implemented the use of Computer-To-Plate technology, which
eliminates a chemically intensive stage in the printing process. This technology has allowed printers
another option to greatly reduce the use of toxic chemicals and the production of pollutants such as
VOCs.

As the environment needs us all more and more, it is of the utmost importance for the printing industry
to continue its movement towards finding and implementing the least-polluting, environmentally
friendly materials and methods when producing printed products.

Introduction
Print industry in India is one of the most well established and oldest media forms in the country. It is

more than a century old and is one of the only two growing print industries in the whole world. The

Print Industry chiefly comprises of newspaper and magazine publishing. Book publishing forms a small

but significant part of the revenue.Even though the industry has reached the phase of maturity, new

newspapers are being launched every year and this boom is predicted to continue till 2011 atleast.Print

media is forecasted to increase its revenue with contribution from new segments like telecom, internet,

OOH, etc. Bundling of advertisement space can happen when companies diversify into different media

areas. Print growth dropped in late 90’s due to the expansion of TV. However, this trend changed and

print started picking up in the start of 2000’s.

Constituents of the Industry Vertical

1)Frequency of printing.

2)Market size of the newspaper.

on a weekly or fortnightly or on longer basis. Frequency of production is not independent of the market

size of the newspaper. A daily or a weekly can be national, large metropolitan or own medium or small
size of the market.

Magazines: At a basic level, magazines can be of two kinds based on their target audience Business-to-

Business (B2B) or Business to Consumer (B2C) magazines. Among these there are several genres like

general consumer magazines, business publication, PR magazines, newsletters, literary reviews and

journals.

Corporate Social Responsibility and Ethics

Corporate Social Responsibility is an integral part of the vision and forms the cornerstone of our core

values. We are committed to our social obligations and bestow enormous importance on carrying our

social responsibilities across the society at large. We endeavor to make a positive contribution to the

underprivileged sections of society by supporting various socio-economic, educational and health

initiatives. We contribute a percentage from every sale invoice to various charities every month. In fact,

many social development programs are driven by the active participation of company employees. We

are committed to assist people who are working for the cause of the society.
We all want to conduct our business legally, and avoid falling into unintended traps where we or our

companies can be sued for breaking a promise or contract. Honesty and fairness are often given short

shrift in this amoral, dog-eat-dog world. In an age when multi-millionaire stockbrokers go to jail for

fraud, television evangelists take money from little old ladies, and officers of savings banks turn out to

be swindlers, it may seem old-fashioned to suggest that printing sales should be conducted in an ethical

manner.

Print salespeople have the enviable role of selling a practical product that customers need. They do not

have to create demand through exaggerated advertising or false claims. The ethics of people in print

sales tends to get tested in small ways rather than in big, high-risk ways. In the long run, ethical selling

practices are preferable because they have survival value for both salesperson and company. Long-term

sales relationships are based on trust and honesty. Even more, it is less work, less stress, and less risk to

provide service to an account where a relationship on the up-and-up has been established.

You may want to ask yourself: Is your company's prevailing ethics attitude a traditional or a realistic

one? Is your own sales style amoral or ethical? Various sales experts have pointed out that past sales

practices earned the selling field a bad reputation. As consumerism continues to spotlight abuses, and

investigative reporters raid shady businesses on the evening news, bad press makes it twice as hard to

uphold an ethical ideal.

Researchers who have examined ethical behavior among employees agree that managers are role

models whose ethical conduct employees watch and emulate. The owner or president sets the tone for

the company, just as a sales manager sets the tone for the sales force. Do not assume that all members

of a sales force know what is right and what is wrong. Ethical values come from the home, and ethnic

and social surroundings. People have completely different ideas of what is fair, honest, and permissible.

A voluntary Code of Ethics which gives members an important management and marketing tool has is

available to Printing Industries members.

The Code sends a message to customers and the community that the member company will deal with

them in a fair and professional manner. It also makes a statement that your business will meet its

obligations to the community and to the industry. The Code can be displayed only by Printing

Industries member companies. We recommend you familiarize your staff with the terms of the Code and

integrate them into your staff induction and customer management strategies. The Code highlights

integrity, honesty, superior customer service, confidentiality, governance, the environment and fair

trading.

Businesses that maintain these standards will be able to tell their customers and highlight their

importance to staff. This Code gives them the means to do both, and to make a difference to their

business.

LEADERSHIP

“As the level of business consciousness enhances it will no longer be the survival of the fittest, but the

survival of the wisest”. The 21st century's competitive environment is challenging traditional

management theories and requires business leaders able to meet the complexity of the new challenges.

This entails a rethinking of the processes of education management. Leadership development initiatives

have to be integrated into everyday business with clear process of learning through understanding,

doing and integrating.

Leadership is "organizing a group of people to achieve a common goal." The leader may or may not

have any formal authority. Effective leadership is the ability to successfully integrate and maximize

available resources within the internal and external environment for the attainment of organizational or

societal goals.
LEADERSHIP AT MAHAJAN PRINTERS

Leadership Development is a critical initiative aimed at business sustainability. Potential leaders are

firstly identified based upon performance and demonstration of leadership competencies. These

identified potential leaders go through a Development Center, wherein the leadership potential is

identified. Based upon the assessment of leadership competencies, an individual development plan is

prepared, agreed with supervisors and executed. The individual development plan is monitored

quarterly. The leaders are developed by extending them planned and structured experiences. Also, the

style of leadership remains Autocratic, which again is very typical in India. In short, the decisions are

solely made by the owner which may or may not have the consent of other staff members. This style of

leadership is used when leaders tell their employees what they want done and how they want it

accomplished, without getting the advice of their followers. Some of the appropriate conditions to use

it is when you have all the information to solve the problem, you are short on time, and your employees

are well motivated.

Some people tend to think of this style as a vehicle for yelling, using demeaning language, and leading

by threats and abusing their power. This is not the authoritarian style, rather it is an abusive,

unprofessional style called “bossing people around.” It has no place in a leader's repertoire. The

authoritarian style should normally only be used on rare occasions. If you have the time and want to

gain more commitment and motivation from your employees, then you should use the participative

style. In autocratic management, there is high level of supervision. It follows polices very strictly and is

characterized with authority motivation. There is instilling of fear in employees when this type of

leadership is used. This also creates a culture of dependency on the leader. According to research, when

this leadership style is used, there is very low efficiency. However, there are various instances when

autocratic leadership can be used in an organization. For example, it can be used on an employee who

is new in an organization and is still learning more about the job.

This management style dominates; the results are normally not the best. When the management style

has command and control, it always drains off the employees ambition. They simply become less

motivated. This makes employees perceive manager as being bossy. This management style is used

when managers in an organization want to have full power in decision making. This management style

may be essential especially when the time at hand is very minimal to incorporate employees’ views.

Authoritarian leadership also includes managers making all decisions.

Management styles in organization differ in accordance to the culture of the organization. Other

influencing aspect on the management style is the size and ownership of the organizations. In India

most organizations have adopted autocratic management style which gives the management a lot of

powers in the running the organization. However, few of the organizations are gradually turning

democratic in their management styles and uphold participative management style since many

decisions are now taken after consulting the employees of the organization.

It has been observed that over the last years, globalization has had a remarkable and extensive impact

on the Indian management style, policies and leadership culture. Thus, currently there is emerging

changes that are occurring in Indian management style both on the micro and macro scale.
