Introduction

“Patna Dairy Project (PDP)” was started at 1st October, 1981 through the National
Dairy Development Board (NDDB).NDDB handed over the arrangements of Patna Dairy
Project (PDP) to Vaishal Patliputra Dugdh Utpadak Sahkari Sangh Ltd.(VPDUSS) with
effect from 1st July, 1988.The Company is ISO-9001:2000 and HACCP (IS-
15000) certified by Bureau of Indian Standards in March, 2002.

A Corporation know as Bihar State Dairy Corporation was formed in the year 1972 for
speedy and effective implementation of the Operation Flood programme in the state.
The Dairy Corporation was to develop the Dairy Cooperatives both at the village level
and milk shed level cooperative would take over the entire infrastructure created in due
course.

The Corporation positioned a multi disciplinary Procurement & Inputs wing in 1975 after
their recruitment and training. A Spread Head Team (SHT) was deputed from National
Dairy Development Board (NDDB) from the same year for helping the Corporation in
organizing and developing the Cooperatives. Though the progress in the initial years
was encouraging, the programme, for obvious reasons could not achieve the goals for
which it was established.

Subsequently, the State Government felt it worthwhile to request the DAIRY BOARD
(NDDB) for taking over the infrastructure created on management basis. The National
Dairy Development Board (NDDB) took over the management of the infrastructure with
effect from 1st October, 1981 under the banner of Patna Dairy Project (PDP).

Patna dairy project got the “Best Productivity Performance” Award by National

Productivity Council (NPC), New Delhi.

There are some common designs principles regarding the environmental
ergonomics in an industry are as follow:

Climate
People work most productively when they are in a comfortable climate. The climate of a
industry either can have a positive or negative impact on workplace productivity and
comfort. To better understand this, we first should realize that the climate you perceive
consists of three main components: air temperature, air humidity and air movement.

Each of these components carefully needs to be adjusted to best suit the working
environment. By maintaining a comfortable climate in your industry, you can increase
the productivity of your employees.

The best air temperature depends on the season. A range of 68-75°F (20-24°C)
generally is preferable, but contrast to the outside temperature also may play a role
depending on the season. For example, in the summer, an industry at 68°F presents a
large contrast to the outdoor temperature and may feel uncomfortably cold, and the
reverse might be true for 75°F in the winter. Right around 73°F tends to be the
temperature at which the majority of people feel comfortable. Depending on the size of
your industry, we also could experiment with the temperature, determining which
temperature is preferred by the most employees.

There is less control over air humidity, although it is an easy measure to take. An
increased level of humidity tends to increase the level of perceived temperature. As
humidity changes with the seasons, so will the humidity in your industry.

In winter, it is ideal to keep the humidity above 30 percent, while in the summer the
humidity range should be between 40-60 percent. If your industry’s HVAC system
allows for control of humidity, we should keep it within these ranges. Otherwise,
investing in a humidifier or dehumidifier may be a cost-effective alternative to help
maintain the comfort and productivity of your employees.

Air movement typically is minimal in an office setting. The recommendation is to keep

drafts below 0.2m/s, which is equivalent to a light breeze. If your workstations are
placed in the paths of vents or open windows, this could be exceeded. We recommend
selecting an office layout that accounts for the layout of vents to minimize the effect of
these drafts.

Observations of climate in Patna dairy project industry:

 As we visited Patna dairy product corporation in winter season so the air

temperature was cold.
 Centralized AC was installed so that the products are produced in cool temperature
and doesn’t decompose.
 Temperature maintained: 16-20 degree Celsius
 There were a lot of open windows which provide a good air movement.
 There were no measures taken for humidity control.

Lighting
Adequate lighting is essential for any indoor workspace. To keep costs low, it is a
common practice to use the minimal amount of lighting needed for whatever task is
being performed. An industry work surface is considered to be a "fine work" situation,
for which medium-to-high levels of light are needed, specifically in the 45-65 foot-
candles (500-700 lux) range. The minimum was chosen to best enable computer
workstation work, while the maximum was chosen to reduce the likelihood of glare and
maintain the most beneficial contrast ratio.

It should be noted that the range of 45-65 foot-candles primarily applies to the actual
work surface. Background and general lighting can be significantly lower, around 30
percent of the minimum value required for the workstation levels, e.g. 15 foot-candles.
Adequate and adjustable work surface lighting then can be used to reach the
workstation specific levels, which may help save on electricity costs.

Glare from surrounding light sources can be a major issue, depending on the
positioning of computer monitors. You may have experienced this phenomenon before
when a lamp (or the sun) behind you reflects off your screen, or maybe when the light
source is in front of you, directly shining in your eyes. Not only does this impede your
ability to see the screen, but it may cause you to squint, leading to eye strain, or
requiring awkward postures to eliminate the effect.

The maximum recommended contrast that should exist in the field of view is 10:1.
Ideally, light sources (including windows) should be positioned to either the left or right.
With the line of sight perpendicular to the light source, the amount of direct and indirect
(reflected) glare is reduced. Where possible, avoid the use of reflective colors and
surfaces, or the use of direct lighting (versus diffuse) to minimize the chances of glare.
Workstations generally should be placed away from windows due to the high contrast
and glare caused by sunlight.

industry lighting is one small aspect of the industry experience. Poor design and
placement can reduce productivity and lead to eyestrain.

Observations of lighting in Patna dairy project industry:

 As we visited Patna dairy project industry we observed that they do not have
adequate light planning. In some parts of the corporation there were very few
artificial lighting provided which made that room a bit dark.
 In some rooms they used the right position of artificial lights.
 10 tubes light are placed on the top wall above each machine.
 500-650 lux per metre square.
 There were also a lot of natural light because they have a lot of open windows and
ventilation.
Odor
Odor of the working place is a important factor for the workers. If the odor is good it
can improve the production rate as the working atmosphere of that place is pleasant.
The odor inside Patna dairy industry is of milk as it offer milk and its product. The
odor was good as we observed.

Ventilation
Ventilation is a necessary part of any industrial facility that will produce harmful air
pollutants in a confined space where employees work. It not only cleans the air
employees will breathe, it also allows for better temperature control and reduces the
risk of fire in the facility. When contamination levels are high, local exhaust is
typically used.
As we observed in the industry, they have a lot of open windows which provide good
air flow. They also have local exhaust in some department.

Smoke
 There was no smoke inside the corporation as we observed.

Worker welfare
According to the Committee on Labor Welfare, welfare services should mean, “Such
Services, facilities, and amenities as adequate canteens, rest and recreation facilities,
sanitary and medical facilities, arrangements for travel to and from place of work, and
for the accommodation of workers employed at a distance from their homes; and such
other services, amenities and facilities, including social security measures as contribute
to the conditions under which workers are employed.”

As we observed Patna dairy product corporation we found that they have canteens,
sanitary and medical facilities but they do not offer recreation facilities and the
accommodation of workers employed at a distance from their home.

In security measures, this corporation provides bouffant cap to very few workers.

Working condition
As we observed in the industry, they have very positive working condition. All the
workers were doing their work with concentration. The industry has a good work
management.

In addition they have garden that gives them a nice environment to work.
