I. A 25 cm long and 2.5 cm diameter stainless steel shaft is driven by a DC motor. The DC motor
housing surface area is 0.075 m2. The ambient air is at 20 Celsius and the convection heat
transfer coefficient is 25 W/(m 2  K) . The motor uses 500 W of electrical power and delivers
60% of it to rotate the shaft. You are also provided that the base temperature of the shaft is equal
to the surface temperature of the motor housing, and that the shaft can be modeled as a pin fin.
Thermal conductivity of the shaft is 15 W/(m  K) . If the tip of the stainless steel shaft is 25
Celsius,
A) Create appropriate schematic complete with appropriate coordinate system. [05]
B) List engineering model features. [05]
C) Determine the surface temperature of the motor housing. [40]

II. A plate is heated by concentrated solar radiation resulting in uniform heat flux of 5000 W/m2
to heat a 10 mm plate on one side. The other side of the plate is exposed to ambient air at 25
Celsius and the associated natural heat transfer coefficient is 20 W/(m 2  K) . The plate has
density of 7850 kg/m3 , specific heat 434 J/(kg  K) , and thermal conductivity 60.5 W/(m  K) .
The initial temperature of plate is 25 Celsius. No engineering model features required for this
problem, but justification of choice of method should be supported by relevant calculations.

A) Starting with appropriate schematic, derive the governing differential equation and the
associated initial condition to determine the time it takes for plate to reach 100 Celsius. Do NOT
solve the differential equation yet. [35]

B) Now, solve the differential equation and determine the time it takes to reach 100 Celsius.
