TECHNIQUE SHOWCASE
Gilding the Lily

Thursday, April 7, 10:00am -1:00pm
Fee: $48, for use of gold, silver, and variegated metal leaf, gold paints and gilding grounds.

Materials: All regular painting materials on the school list – refer to page 4.
A quality Size 000, and older brush - Size 1, Opaque white,
300lb HP watercolor paper, tracing paper
Bring your own botanical drawing of a single bloom - simple, large shapes such as a rose bud, viola, tulip,
or cornflower etc work best.

TECHNIQUE SHOWCASE –
Painting White Flowers on Tinted Paper

Materials: All regular painting materials on the school list – refer to last page, and a bottle of Dr. Ph
Martin’s Bleed Proof White. A dab of the latter will be provided for those who do not already have it. A
small sample of tinted paper with a flower sketched on it will also be provided, ready for practicing the
technique. A small fee may be requested at class to cover the materials supplied by the instructor.

RECOMMENDED ART MATERIALS – School List
6 – Winsor&Newton (W&N) Artist quality watercolor 5ml tubes of transparent pigments (no cadmiums)
OR W&N Cotman watercolor tubes (in equivalent colors)
o Yellows: Winsor Lemon and Winsor Yellow Deep (Not Winsor & Newton Lemon Yellow)
o Reds: Permanent Rose and Scarlet Lake
o Blues: Cobalt Blue Deep or WM Graham Cobalt Blue and Winsor Blue (green shade)
3 – Watercolor brushes: Raphael brand - Kolinsky sable, round, Sizes 00, 2 & 4 (Traditional length, not miniature)
OR finely pointed, good quality synthetics
Watercolor paper – Fabriano Artistico “Bright White” HP (smooth surface) 140 lb – cut one sheet into ¼ sheets.
Fabriano as listed above is stocked by Plaza at Rockville. (Strathmore or Saunders watercolor papers – not suitable.)
Water container – lightweight & preferably 4-cup capacity;
Cellulose sponge (purchase from supermarket) and Small packet of Kleenex
Painting Palettes – 2 small round flower palettes, white porcelain (Plastic is much cheaper but not satisfactory)
Pencils – grades HB & 2H (artist quality) or mechanical. Please sharpen pencils prior to class.
Erasers – kneaded gray eraser; Removable drafting tape – for use while tracing
