 Automating Heat Tracing Design

Plant World Coordinate Model Project Management

VisiTrace creates a 3D “Plant World Coordinate” single line
model consisting of only the heat traced piping, allowing visu-
alization of tracing distribution. This Plant View feature is also
used by the Heat Tracing Designer to define each individual
circuit and validate the heat tracing design using Thermon’s
CompuTrace Design Program.
VisiTrace identifies the location of all heat tracing junction
boxes, end terminations, and temperature sensors. This infor-
mation can be used by the project electrical design team to
optimize the size and location of power distribution conduit,
cable tray and wire.
Through software program links, VisiTrace creates the final
Heat Tracing Isometric Deliverable. This process provides a
high degree of design accuracy by using files extracted from
the original model to create the heat tracing design drawings.
Format consistency is maintained throughout the project.
In addition to providing the standard deliverable items and
documents, the design software system is capable of creating
a log file, which captures the plant coordinates for all trace
heating circuit power points, temperature sensors and heat
tracing termination points. These coordinates can be overlaid
onto the plant plot plan drawings and used to optimize the
location of power distribution panels and transformers, as well
as cable tray, tray loading and routing. The coordinate log
can also be provided to the plant 3-D model adminis-
trator and plotted back into the model.
The timely execution and the management of materials is
an important aspect to the success of a project. Using the
VisiTrace 3D design system, the heat tracing designer can
select and isolate piping based on:

• Plant Area or Modules
• Piping Service
• Work Package Release
The VisiTrace automated design system also provides for
timely delivery of materials coordinated with the construction
schedule. This overall coordination and material management
provides for on-time commissioning, start-up and turnover of
the heat tracing system.
