TITLE OF THE PROJECT

“ LAN MONITORING AND CONTROLLING

THROUGH GPRS “
A) RELEVANCE
The main objective of this project is to provide maximum details about the
network to the administrator on their mobile phone, when he/she is away from
office/goes out of station.
Today, the world is rapidly changing the statement “We are in the world” to
“World is in our hands”. The main aim of our project is to control and monitor the LAN
network from our wireless handheld device i.e. cell phone from anywhere irrespective of
distance.
Say, you have a LAN setup at your office. Sitting at home you want to know the
LAN status. You can do so by storing this project in your cell phone and executing the
same.

B) PRESENT THEORIES AND PRACTICE USED

In today’s world we have an application that can control our PC by our mobile
phone through the SMS service provided by the mobile phone service provider.

SMS technique
Having a mobile phone we can send SMS (command) to our mail id. Then we can
set outlook to check our mail account every 60 seconds. The listener application will be
running in the system and will be checking if any new mail has arrived to inbox. If any,
then it will open the mail and check if the message is sent from our mobile phone. If it is,
then it will read the command and then it will process the command.
The problems with this application are
 The user will be charged for the SMS hence is not cost effective.
 It is not interactive (one way communication i.e. from mobile to PC).
 There may be possibilities that the messages may not be delivered in time.
Bluetooth technique
We can also control PC using bluetooth device that is connected to the PC, which
we want to control. The listener present in the PC listens the command sent through the
mobile and processes the same.

The problems with this application are

 The distance is limited. (The range of bluetooth is around 10 meters).
 It requires an external bluetooth device, which makes this application costlier.

C) PROPOSED EXPERIMENTAL WORK

In order to over come the problems mentioned in the above two techniques we are
developing a software which uses GPRS (Global Packet Radio Services) to monitor and
control the LAN.
While you are outstation /away from office, we can monitor and control the
network ourself using this application, instead of depending on third party. Just load this
application in your cell phone, login anytime to the application and see who is busy with
what in the office. Consider a LAN setup with the server machine connected to Internet.
Here the interaction between the clients and the wireless media takes place through
server.

The advantages of this application over other applications

 It is cost effective as it is using GPRS.
 There is no limitation on the distance.
 Faster access.
 This application gives the overall status of the LAN on mobile.
 No external device required.

D) REQUIRED PLATFORM AND SOFTWARE’S

 Windows platform.
 Tomcat server.
 J2ME wireless toolkit.
 Jdk 1.5.
 JDBC.

E) EXPECTED DATE OF COMPLETION

Expected date of completion is 15th may 2008.

F) APPROXIMATE ESTIMATED COST OF PROJECT

Approximate estimated cost of the project is Rs. 15000.
