Activity remained steady in the claims trading market in the first month of the new year. While the
636 transfers recorded in January were fewer than the 687 logged in December 2010, the dollar
amount traded increased by 35% to $2.55 billion. Lehman Brothers Holdings, Inc. set the pace in the
claims trading market for most of 2010 and started off 2011 in a similar fashion. Again, Lehman was
the most actively traded case, accounting for 37% of total transfers and 86% of the total face value
transferred last month. A complete list of SecondMarket’s tracked debtors with transfers during the
month of January may be found on page 5. Pages 6-14 display historical transfer data for all 500
tracked debtors and associated transfers.
Trading in low-cost airline Mesa Air Group, Inc., whose reorganization plan was confirmed on January
20, 2011, continued to grow, with 39 transfers totaling $170 million. Comparatively, five Mesa trades
were completed in December 2010, after just one trade occurred in each of the two preceding
months. The $170 million traded in Mesa claims was almost 5x greater than the value of all Mesa
trades on record prior to January 2011. The $2.7 million in W.R. Grace claims transfers represented the
specialty chemical company’s highest trade value since April 2010. Grace is a step closer to emerging
from its near decade-long stay in Chapter 11, after its reorganization plan was confirmed on January
31. As required by Grace’s case, the plan must now gain approval in the District Court.
Lack’s Stores, Inc. rose to the number three slot in the Top 10 most actively traded cases by number
of claims transferred just one month after it traded for the first time. Lack’s is currently liquidating its
property assets while developing a plan to collect outstanding customer notes receivables. Cabrini
Medical Center of New York City, which entered Chapter 11 in July 2009 but traded for the first time
in January 2011, and Gas City Ltd., an independent gas station chain, also entered the Top 10 for the
first time, with 18 and 16 transfers, respectively. Cabrini earned approval of its liquidation plan on
January 26. Meanwhile, Gas City furthered its plans to exit bankruptcy; on January 13, it gained
approval of bidding procedures to auction itself through a 363 asset sale. The proposed date for the
Gas City auction is March 2, 2011.
