U.S. NGOs Respond to Japan Tsunami

Washington, D.C. (March 11, 2011)—Members of InterAction, the largest alliance of U.S. NGOs
working abroad, are responding to the 8.9 magnitude earthquake and resulting tsunami that
devastated parts of northern Japan earlier today. A complete list of organizations responding
to the crisis is available at www.interaction.org.

The Japanese government's disaster response capacity is highly developed and very
sophisticated, but as stated by Samuel A. Worthington, president of InterAction, “Our community
stands ready to help as needed. Our members have quickly mobilized efforts and are
communicating with directly with civil society groups in Japan.”

Initial reports indicate that over 1,000 people have lost their lives. Hundreds of thousands of
people and perhaps millions more have been affected.
