An ambassador is a man sent to lie abroad for the good of his country.
This quotation might sound pretty controversial and not without a reason:but can
we actually agree with its main message? Can we confidently insist that the core of
diplomacy stands on the principle of white lie? I would like to try to figure this out
through some observations.
First of all, we need to clearly understand what is ambassador’s key role and what
he is supposed to deal with. Speaking with simple words, he is an official envoy,
representative of state who is involved in usually temporary diplomatic assignment.
So, does ambassador speaks his own opinion out? By no means, he expresses the
opinion of his government, the position that was chosen by hundreds of other
people supporting interests of at the same time thousands people. I guess, when
things get that serious, there is no time for being too sincere and truthful. Diplomat
has to be devious and smart and if telling total truth then for puzzle your opponents
even more. Also, if you lie for better, if your lie helps you to fix the situation, it is
not a crime. Sometimes truth doesn’t have enough power as lies do. Definitely, it is
applicable not only to diplomacy but to the life in general.
However, some people would doubt my position. It is common to say that the more
you lie the more you get lost in it and consequently the harder it is for you to break
free. Who said that lie can be beneficial for the country? It is actually hard for me to
understand this point of view and find some strong sides of it because I totally agree
with our quote. Diplomacy is an art requiring practice, skills, intelligence, charisma
to conduct of foreign relations. Ambassador’s life is pretty peripatetic and this
forever dinamic, trembling life’s voyage is not easy. But the way of truth is. If you
maintain to maneuver through those obstacles and situations using white lies, you
are a successful ambassador.
To sum these thoughts up, I would like to say that either truth and lies can be used
by ambassador for a good of his country.
