Pvt. Joseph Simons
Army Pvt. Joseph Simons has gradu-
ated from basic combat training at Fort
Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
During the nine weeks of training,
the soldier studied the Army mission,
history, tradition and core values, physi-
cal fitness, and received instruction and
practice in basic combat skills, military
weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet
training, drill and ceremony, marching,
rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed
combat, map reading, field tactics, mili-
tary courtesy, military justice system, ba-
sic first aid, foot marches, and field train-
ing exercises.
Simons graduated in 2007 from
Newaygo High School, Newaygo, Mich.

evening. Ruth Bloomquist, the first half of the
Bloomquist duo, is a singer, songwriter and

fiddle, and John “Sky” King on guitar, this band
packs a powerful presence on stage. Also taking

Tri County’s Got Talent Show will be performing on
Saturday, March 19 at 6:30 p.m. in the TC High School
gym. Proceeds go to fund teacher/student recommended
school improvement projects. Come support TC.
March is Youth Arts Month and three students from
MacNaughton are showing their artwork at the Grand
Rapids Art Museum. The students are; second grader
Neely.
Michigan Art Education Association and the Grand
Rapids Art Museum are working together to sponsor this
K-12 student show. Art teachers Mrs. Steenland and Mrs.
Zeurn chose projects from ten students to be juryed for
the Art Show in region 9. Region 9 includes students from
Montcalm, Kent, Ottawa, and Ionia counties. Three pieces
were selected to be a part of the art exhibit. The work will
be at the museum until March 9, 2011.

Congratulations to teacher Gary Polley for a recent grant
he was awarded. According to the grant application, the
funds will be utilized for students to provide a service to the

cart, greeting cards, and special occasion cards. Gary will
be working with his students by demonstrating the need
for budgeting, managing money, and how to communicate
with other people to sell their product.

Trufant – The Maple Valley Complex in Trufant is again hosting their Spring
Exposition. The event will be held on Saturday, April 2nd from 9 am - 2 pm.
The Complex building is the former Trufant Elementary School. Over 60
booths/vendors were accessible to people attending the venue in previ-
ous years. The entire Complex building and outside lawn area has been
reserved for the vendors to promote their business and product.

adoption fee, and a $25 refundable spay/neuter deposit. Once the animal
is fixed by the set date, the adopter is reimbursed the spay/neuter deposit.

Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 is involved in the function of every cell of the body, especially affecting the regulation of DNA, but also
energy production within every cell. Unlike most nutrients, absorption of vitamin B12 actually begins in the mouth where
small amounts of unbound crystalline B12 can be absorbed through the mucous membrane. Most of the vitamin B12 in our
food is bound on to proteins. It is released from the protein in the stomach by gastric enzymes, which require Hydrochloric
Acid. Also in the stomach, Intrinsic Factor, a protein manufactured by the lining of the stomach, is released in response to
the presence of food.
In the first portion of the small intestine, free B12 binds to Intrinsic Factor, to form a B12-IF complex. B12 must be
attached to IF for it to be absorbed. In addition, intrinsic factor protects the vitamin from break down by intestinal bacteria.
The B12-IF complex is absorbed by the last portion of the small intestine. Therefore, absorption of vitamin B12 from food
requires an intact and functioning Stomach, Pancreas, and Small Intestine. Problems with any one of these organs makes a
vitamin B12 deficiency probable.
So, anyone with GERD, IBS, or Crohn’s disease, anyone taking the purple pill or anti-acids, anyone over 60 (low levels
of Intrinsic Factor), or anyone who has had a gastric by-pass or banding will have a good chance of becoming deficient in
Vitamin B12.
So, many people are deficient in B12 and they do not know it. Most of the time they experience fatigue, weakness,
fibromyalgia, and a general slow down in their system. Some lab tests may suggest B12 deficiency. When you have a CBC
(complete blood count), one of the tests included is the MCV (mean cellular volume). If it is high, it means the red blood
cells have become larger than they should be. This sometimes means that B12 is low, but it is not always accurate. We
sometimes do muscle response testing, but that is somewhat subjective.
The only definite way to know if you have enough vitamin B12 in your system is to have a blood
