Stations of the Cross
The Way of the Cross, also called Stations of the Cross, is
one of the Church's most popular pious exercises,
especially during Lent. Why? Because the events of the
Passion and death of Christ have been difficult to
understand. His disciples had to read anew everything that
was written about him "in the law of Moses, the Prophets,
and the Psalms" in order to understand that Jesus had just
fulfilled it. On the Cross, Christ's death appeared to be "a
stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles" (I
Corinthians 1.23). That's the reason why the disciples of
Jesus remembered and meditated on these events. The fruit
of their meditation is the accounts in the chapters of the
Passion written by the evangelists that the Church reads
each year on Palm Sunday and Good Friday. The
evangelists remembered how Jesus prophesised his Passion
on different occasions and how he insisted on the
commitment of being his followers. That's the reason why
the faithful draw inspiration from the crucified Christ. He
himself has been consistent in teaching the Good News,
even in the supreme event of his Passion and death on the
Cross.
Along the centuries, the faithful made pilgrimages to
Jerusalem with the idea of walking in the footsteps of their
master. But this was not a common option for many
because of geographical reasons. Hence the reason of
reproducing the Way of the Cross in different parts of the
world, especially along the walls of churches. The most
common form (14 Stations) is the one promoted by the
Franciscan St. Leonardo of Port-Maurice (1676-1751).
This year as our "Parish Mission" we will celebrate the
Stations each of the Fridays in Lent at 7:30 pm, putting
particular emphasis on turning this devotion into a real
liturgical event of prayer, reflection and song. Join us!
