Prerequisite Knowledge:
• Students are familiar with base 10 blocks
• Students are familiar with polygons
• Students have used pattern blocks, perimeter and area
Materials/Resources/Technology:
• Math Journal p. 110, 111, 112
• Base-10 blocks
• Straightedges (6-7)
• Square, large rhombus, small rhombus, triangle pattern blocks (6-7 of each)
• Projector
• Computer
• Whiteboard
• Whiteboard markers
Implementation:
Time
10 minutes Opening of lesson: (Objectives, hook, behavior expectations)
We will quickly go over the math message about base-10 blocks. I will draw the shorthand
symbols on the board for students to refer to in activities.
I will explain that today we will be doing explorations dealing with estimates and polygons.
They will be working in groups and groups have opportunities to earn dollars by actively
participating and for good behavior. I will walk to each group and explain what the
requirements are for each station to the entire class.
35-40 minutes Students will begin at the group they are seated at. They will remain at each station for 8-9
Minutes.
Exploration A: A quantity of base 10 blocks will be piled in the middle of the table. Students
will estimate how many are there. They will then count to find the total amount. They will fill in
Math Journal p 11.
Exploration B: Students will complete Math Journal 111 using a ruler to draw lines to form a
Polygon. They can work with a partner or discuss answers with their classmates.
Exploration C: Students will use pattern blocks to find the perimeter of the block. First they will
Estimate the perimeter and then roll the pattern block along the line to see the perimeter. Students
will complete Math Journal page 112.
Exploration D: Students will work on their homework pages: Math Journal 113 and Skills Link
68.
As students are working, I will circulate from group to group. I will guide students if they need
help. I will ask students why they are doing the problems they way they are to see if they
actually understand the questions.
15 minutes Summary/Closing:
We will briefly go over questions that posed problems for students. I will ask students what
techniques worked best when working with a group. Did the group agree? Was there a leader?
We will make notes of what students can do to improve their ability to work in groups in the
future.
Student Assessment:
Students will be assessed throughout the lesson on their participation and ability to complete
pages in workbook. I will collect the workbooks and check to make sure that students attempted
each problem. We will go over answers as a class. I will look for problems that were most
missed by students.
