Lito Dormitorio, a labor consultant from the Department of Agrarian Reform showed his superb knowledge in the
game of chess by capturing the title of the 38th edition of the 1st Saturday Non-Master Chess Tournament last
March 5, 2011. In his victory, he took the championship solo prize of P 3,000 plus an elegant trophy given by the
organizer Barangay Don Bosco Chess Club and Parañaque Chess Association. The event sponsors are Tagaytay
City Mayor Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino, Magnolia Beverages, Hi-Smart Vitamin, Complete Solution Pharma, Boy
Francisco and Hector Tagaysay.

Aside from Dormitorio, other winners that shares the 2nd to 3rd place are John Piccio, Ervil Villa, Robert Cacho and
Jerad Docena. Category winners are Top High School went to Kevin Arquero, Top Grade School for Robin
Ignacio, Top Lady Jellie Ann Magro and Top Senior for Bel Redolbela.

Let’s dwell just a little bit more on this tournament victory of GM Mark
Paragua. It was held in memory of Jimmy Quon, a very well-liked chess
coach and blitz player extraordinaire. He is proof that chess is not only about
playing the game -- it is also about instruction, enjoyment, journalism,
theoretical research, etc etc .... and a very much ignored and quickly
forgotten discipline -- chess organization.

This tournament is not only a memorial to Jimmy Quon but also a testimony to the hardworking chess organizer National
Master Ankit Gupta.

NM Ankit Gupta is a United States Chess Federation Life Master that learned to play chess at the age of seven. He was born
in New Delhi, India, and currently resides in Los Angeles, California. He emigrated from India with his family to the United
States in 1991, and more recently moved to the greater Los Angeles area in 2006 for his academic studies at the University of
California, Los Angeles. He originally learned chess under the tutelage of NM Michael Arne and reached the 2100 level under
Arne’s guidance. Ankit took a hiatus from chess for a few years before returning to tournament play in 2009. That same year,
he started taking lessons from Grandmaster Ronen Har-Zvi, the U-16 World Youth Champion in 1992. Within 11 months,
Ankit has increased his rating by more than 250 rating points, and is now rated over 2300 USCF and 2250 FIDE. He
attributes much of his recent rating increase due to the constant guidance of his instructor and friend, GM Har-Zvi.

Ankit has an interest in various research fields especially those involving the polymer chemistry industry. Recently, he has
been collaborating with GM Ronen Har-Zvi on a chess book, "Playing the Petroff," under the publication of Everyman Chess
that will be released in the Spring of 2011. Recently, together with Michael Belcher, formed Metropolitan Chess, an
organization based in Los Angeles to promote the game and offer chances at GM/IM norms, and high-level chess tournaments
in an effort to bring greater chess opportunities to Los Angeles, California, USA.

You know how to jumpstart (once again!) chess development in the Philippines? Encourage private organizers like Mr. Gupta
is doing in Los Angeles. Why should the NCFP be the one to do all the organizing?
Without organizers like him we will not have great chess like this.

Kiddies Cup for the heroes of our future generation which was held just a stone throw away from the EDSA Shrine

ASEAN Olympiad Silver medalist and Palarong Pambansa Finalist Daryl Unix Samantila of Adamson University locked
arms with Batang Quezon City Champion John Eric Margarito of Bagong Silangan High School in leading the MERALCO
All Star Kiddies of Ahedres or ASKALs by scoring 4 points a piece in this 5-round rapid tournament. Other members of the
ASKALs are Xavier Champ Justin Corpin of Roces High School and Shell Finalist Jose Carlo Castro with Mandaluyong
City Champion Michael Lirazan of Pleasant Hills Elementary School and ASEAN Olympiad Bronze medalist Rhal Sol
Cruz of La Salle as reserves.
The kids from Sta Rosa which is composed of Jasper Forcado, Mauro Ciriaco, Jasper Marce and Mark Marcellan finished at
2nd place while Makati with Michael Magpily, Bernadette Galas, Jester Sistoza, and Francois Magpily wound up 3rd.

ROSALES, Pangasinan – Janelle Mae Frayna of FEU-FERN College crowned herself as the champion in the second leg of the 2011
Philippine Academy for Chess Excellence-National Chess Academy age-group chess championships held at the SM City Rosales here
over the weekend.

Frayna, the 14-year-old campaigner from Bicol region, finished with 4.5 points on four wins and one draw in the five-round tournament
organized by PACE in cooperation with the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP), headed by president/chairman
Prospero “Butch” Pichay, and Rosales Mayor Ricardo .V. Revita.
Frayna’s only draw came against chess wizard Prince Mark Aquino of San Nicolas, Pangasinan. The junior student of FEU-FERN
employed the tricky hyper-modern Alekhine defense against Aquino’s aggressive king’s pawn opening play to salvage a draw.
She capped her campaign with another win over teammate Enrica Vila in the fifth and final round.
Sharing the limelight were Romulo Curioso of Cabanatuan East Central School, who edged Samantha Glo Revita of Rosales North
Central School in the tiebreak to win the 14 years old and under category; Daniel John Lemi of Vigan Central School, who topped
the 11 years old and under class; and Jamier Lus Uy of Don Bosco-Tarlac, who ruled the eight under division.
Curioso, 11 and a sixth grader form Cabanatuan East Central, and Revita, 11 and a fifth grader from Rosales North,

So, Paragua, Gomez vying in Nat'l inter-province chessfest

THREE of the country’s top players – GMs Wesley So, Mark Paragua and John Paul Gomez -- have already confirmed their
participation in the 2011 National Inter-Province chess team championship set April 1-5 at the Cabagnot Training Center in Kalibo,
Aklan.

So, the country’s highest-rated player with an ELO of 2667, will carry the banner of Tagaytay City of Mayor Abraham “Bambol”
Tolentinto, while Paragua will lead the fight for Misamis Oriental during the five-day competition being held in this progressive
Western Visayas province noted for its world-famous Santo Niño Ati-Atihan Festival.

Gomez will spearhead the title-retention bid of LWUA-Quezon City A.

Also in the early list of participants are Palawan, Oriental Mindoro, Ilo-ilo Province, Antique, Pampanga, Laguna, Rizal,Bohol, Capiz
Aklan, Sulong Roxas City, LWUA-Quezon City B and C, DAR- Quezon City, PNP- Quezon City, Makati City, Bacolod City, Iloilo
City, Passi City and other cities and other top provinces in the Visayas and Mindanao.

A guaranteed cash prize of P100,000 and trophy await the winning team in this annual competition organized by the National Chess
Federation of the Philippines (NCFP), headed by chairman/president Prospero “Butch” Pichay, in cooperation with the Aklan
provincial government, thru Gov. Carlito Marquez.

The runner-up and the third placer will receive P70,000 and P50,000, respectively.
NCFP executive director Willie Abalos said the participating team can field in four regular players and one alternate. Teams,
however, can only field one titled player -- GM, IM, FM or NM -- who will play on top board.
The other cash prizes are: P30,000 to the fourth placer, P20,000 to the fifth placer; P10,000 to the sixth placer; P9,000 to the seventh
placer; P8,000 to the eighth placer; P7,000 to the ninth placer; and P6,000 to the 10th placer.
The top individual performers from boards one to five will also get P2,000 each and medals.

NATIONAL AGE-GROUP CHESS TOURNEY TO LINGAYEN

ALL chess roads lead to Lingayen, Pangasinan for the staging of the 2011 National age-group chess championships at the Capitol
Complex Training Center on April 8-12.
An annual undertaking of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP), headed by chairman/president Prospero
“Butch” Pichay, in cooperation with the Pangasinan provincial government thu Gov. Amado T. ,Espino, Jr., the five-day
competition will be held to determine the country’s representatives to the Asian Youth chess championship scheduled May 14-
22 in Subic, Zambales.
The staging of the prestigious competition in Lingayan was recently finalized after Gov. Espino formally accepted the proposal
submitted by Pichay, who was represented by newly-designated NCFP director for grassroots development program GM
Jayson Gonzales.
Gonzales personally visited Gov. Espino in his office in Pangasinan last Feb. 16.
Also present during the meeting were Juan Sison, president of the Pangasinan Chess Federation, and Modesto Operania, senior adviser
to Gov. Espino and the provincial sports coordinator for Pangasinan.
“The current direction of grassroots chess development program, with our youths as the focus, coupled with inspiring supports from
the LGUs is a vision we have long dream,” said Pichay upon learning the recent developments.

Up for grabs in the nine-round Swiss system competition, which open to all youth players aged 18 years and below, are the right to
represent the country in the Asian Youth Championship in the following age categories: 18 years and below (boys and girls); 16 years
and below (boys and girls); 14 years and below (boys and girls); 12 years and below (boys and girls) 10 years and below (boys &
girls); and 8 years and below (boys and girls).
Entry fee is P250 in all categories.

Residents of Pangasinan, however, will be charged P100 only provided that he/she can present proof of residence.
Deadline of registration and payment is April 6.

This time the 2nd Makati Torneo De Ajedrez went to the new
TOUCH member Narciso Gumila from tondo, manila. He captured the
event held last March 6, 2011 at 4th Floor, Olympia, Makati

MOVE! City. The event was organized regularly by Makati Chess Club
headed by Club President Atty. Vic Aceveda.

Meanwhile in the distaff side Kiddies Category, the honor awarded to Jester Sistoza and Franceslouis Changco who are co-
champion in the just concluded Makati Torneo De Ajedrez. Other winners are Lawrence Magura, Francis Roi Changco and
Erick Spencer Valdez. The reward of holding this event for kiddies is the fast learning in becoming a strong player.

GM Wesley So is No. 4 of World Junior Player
Philippines move to #29 in the world
The decision to withdraw after the sixth round of the 2011 Aeroflot Open chess championships in Moscow last month
turned out to be a wise move for GM Wesley So, after all. So struggled in two major international tournaments -- the Tata
Steel-Corus chess championship and the Aeroflot Open – but managed to keep fourth place in the FIDE list of the world’s
top junior players after the first three months of the year.
The 17-year-old Filipino champion completed the first quarter of the year with an ELO of 2667, or six points lower than
his ELO 2673 in the previous FIDE quarterly list. GM Fabiano Carunaa of Italy kept the top spot in the list with an ELO
of 2716 from a high of 2771. GM Anish Giri of the Netherlands and GM Le Quang Liem of Vietnam came in second and
third with ELO of 2690 and 2689, respectively.

In solo fifth is GM Sebastian Felle rof France with ELO 2657.

“I think withdrawing (in the Aeroflot) was the right thing to do at that time since I can’t think very well due to over-
fatigue. That way, I was able to save a few more ELO points,” said So, who is scheduled to leave for Canada today to
join his family for a much-needed, 10-day vacation.
Overall, So dropped to No. 76 in the world from a high of 64 in the January rating list. He was previousl ylisted No. 60
in the world with an ELO of 2674 during the July 2010 period.
The Philippines, however, jumped to No. 29 in the list of the world’s top chess-playing countries despite So’s recent
struggles.
The Philippines now has an average rating of 2538, seven points higher than the previous rating period.
The country is still ahead of Southeast Asian rivals Vietnam (34), Indonesia (59), Singapore (61) and Malaysia (74).
GM Rogelio Antonio, Jr. maintained second place in the local list with an ELO of 2589.
GM Mark Paragua made the biggest gain during the three-month period, rising to ELO 2547 from the previous 2521 after
playing 30 games in the lucrative US circuit. The 26-year-old campaigner from Meycauyan, Bulacan reached his peak with
an ELO of 2621 in April 2006.
Also making a jump was GM John Paul Gomez, who vaulted to fourht place with an ELO of 2538 from 2527.
GM Roland Salvador, who made history by becoming he country’s newest GM during an internatonal tournament in Italy
late last year, fell from third to fifth with an ELO of 2532.
