10B11PH111 (PHYSICS – I, 2010-11), Tutorial Sheet – 10

1. As we know that photon has no rest mass but it is considered to be component of electromagnetic
radiation in the form of a quanta. How do you explain it’s interaction with electromagnetic field.?
2. A sphere of radius 6.0 cm at 1200 K in an enclosure at 500K. find the rate of loss of heat of the sphere
assuming it to behave as 60% of a black body radiation. Given σ 5.7x10-5 ergs/cm2/sec/K4
3. Calculate the temperature of the sun from the following data : Ratio of the radius of the sun to the radius
of the earth orbit around the sun = 4.649x1010-3; σ = 5.77x10-5 ergs/sec/cm2/K4, S= 1.937 cal/cm2/min
4. Find the surface temperature of the sun and moon if the wavelength λ for maximum intensity of emitted
radiation is 4753Ẩ and 14 µ.
5. Number of allowed modes/volume in the freq. range υ to υ+dυ are 8πυ2dυ/c3. Calculate the number of
modes in the wavelength range between 5000A to 5002A in an enclosure of volume 100Cm3.
6. An x-ray photon of initial frequency 3x1019Hz scattered by an electron at an angle of 90o. find frequency
of scattered photon. Calculate energy transferred to the electron.
7. In a Compton effect experiment, incident x-rays have a wavelength of 10pm. The scattered x-rays at a
certain angle have a wavelength 10.5pm. Find the momentum (magnitude and direction) of the
corresponding recoiled electron.
8. Explain ultraviolet catastrophe using proper expressions and figures.
