1 МЕТОДИЧЕСКИЕ РЕКОМЕНДАЦИИ

Специфика овладения иностранным языком студентами заочной


формы обусловлена значительным объемом самостоятельного изуче-
ния предмета, что требует систематического выполнения требуемых
заданий.
Самостоятельная работа студента по изучению курса «Иностран-
ный язык» включает следующие виды работы:
– овладение базовой лексикой;
– закрепление грамматических правил;
– чтение текстов на английском языке вслух в соответствии
с правилами чтения;
– перевод текстов на русский язык (устный и письменный).
Необходимо уметь пользоваться словарем: определять исходную
форму слова, выявлять принадлежность слова к той или иной части
речи, выбирать нужное значение слова в зависимости от контекста вы-
сказывания и т. д. Важно обращаться к специализированным словарям,
если испытываете затруднение в определении нужного значения мно-
гозначного слова.
Следует заучивать незнакомые слова, что позволит значительно
повысить словарный запас.
Выполняя грамматические задания обращайте свое внимание на
грамматические таблице в разделе 7, также можно пользоваться
«Грамматическим справочником» (авторы: Жданова Н.Г., Хворова
Л.А.), ресурсами сети Интернет или любыми другими источниками.
В сборник включены тексты для дополнительного чтения, кото-
рые могут использоваться на аудиторных занятиях, а также как допол-
нительный материал для самостоятельного изучения.
Выполнение системы контрольных заданий, при изучении курса
«Иностранный язык», позволяет реализовать следующие задачи:
– пополнение словарного запаса иноязычной лексики;
– развитие навыков ознакомительного, изучающего, поискового и
просмотрового видов чтения;
– развитие коммуникативных навыков;
– закрепление грамматических явлений;
– формирование навыков аннотирования текстов на английском
и русском языках и т.д.
На зачет выносятся следующие задания:
– контрольный перевод текста со словарем;
– выполнение заданий на понимание текста (ответы на вопросы);
– тест лексико-грамматический.

2 ТРЕБОВАНИЯ К ОФОРМЛЕНИЮ И ЗАЩИТЕ РАБОТЫ

2.1 Порядок выполнения и порядок сдачи контрольной работы

В семестре выполняется одна контрольная работа, представлен-


ная в трех вариантах. Студент должен выполнить свой вариант в соот-
ветствии с последней цифрой студенческого шифра. Студенты, шифр
в зачетной книжке которых оканчивается на 1, 4, 7 выполняют 1 вари-
ант; 2, 5, 8 – 2 вариант; 3, 6, 9, 0 – 3 вариант.
На обложке тетради напишите: свой вариант, фамилию, инициа-
лы, номер группы, адрес.
Контрольное задание выполняется в обычной листовой тетра-
ди. Номера упражнений следуют по порядку и пишутся на одной (пра-
вой) стороне тетради. В тетради оставляются поля 5 см.

Упражнения по грамматике и лексике выполняются по образцу.


Контрольное задание, выполненное не полностью или не в соот-
ветствии с указаниями, возвращается студенту без проверки.
Контрольная работа сдается на не позднее чем за месяц до сес-
сии.

2.2 Порядок защиты контрольной работы

Контрольная работа считается защищенной, если:


1) студент хорошо ориентируется в лексическом и грамматиче-
ском материале контрольной работы;
2) студент свободно переводит текст с использованием своего
словаря.

THE TOWER OF LONDON


1. Whoever comes to London is eager to see the Tower of London,
the scene of nearly 900 years of England's history. The Tower has in the past
been a fortress, a palace and a prison. It was William the Conqueror who
began building the Tower for the purpose of protecting the city, other mon-
archs made additions in later centuries.
2. The Tower comprises several towers: the Jewel Tower, the White
Tower, in which the Kings of England held their Court, and others. Though
kings were born, lived and were married there, it happened also that kings
and queens were murdered in the Tower. Some terrible deeds of which we
read in the history of England took place in this grim old Tower. It was said
that whoever held the keys to the Tower, held the keys to the kingdom.
3. It is impossible in a few lines even to mention the historical events
connected with the Tower of London. One of the Towers is called the
Bloody Tower, being believed to be the scene of the murder of Edward V
and his brother, the Duke of York. Queen Anne Boleyn, the Princess (after-
wards Queen) Elisabeth and many other persons of high rank passed under
the arch of the Traitors' Gate on their way to prison or the scaffold. Thomas
More also passed as prisoner under the arch of the Traitors' Gate.
4. Now the Tower is a museum and houses the Crown jewels and oth-
er treasures. The only inhabitants of the Tower are ravens. There is a legend
that the Tower will fall if it loses its ravens. Therefore the birds with clipped
wings are carefully guarded.

TRAFALGAR SQUARE
1. At the beginning of the nineteenth century England defeated the
French and the Spaniards in a great sea battle at Trafalgar. It was a trium-
phant victory of the British nation over Napoleon. Admiral Nelson was
killed in this battle Trafalgar Square was made to commemorate the victory
of Nelson at Trafalgar. The Nelson Column was erected in 1842.
2. The statue of Nelson on the top of the column was made by a well-
known English sculptor Edward Bailey. Round the base there are four
bronze carvings representing scenes from famous naval battles. Many years
passed by before the four great lions were placed at the foot of the Nelson
Column.
3. On the north side of Trafalgar Square stands the National Gallery,
one of the world's leading art galleries. It has extensive collections of vari-
ous European schools of art. People like to gather in the centre of the square
to sit around the fountains, to watch pavement artists, or to eat their lunch
and feed the pigeons.
4. Quite often the square becomes the location for meetings and in it
crowds of Londoners congregate to celebrate political rallies. So it can be
said that Trafalgar Square is the heart from which the beat is emitted to all
the Londoners.

ST PAUL'S CATHEDRAL
1. In the West End of London one can see the famous St Paul's Cathe-
dral, the masterpiece of the well-known English architect Christopher Wren.
The old building of the Cathedral was sadly in need of repair and Christo-
pher Wren was called on to carry out repairs and alterations, but he was pre-
vented from doing this by the Great Plague and the Great Fire of London
that destroyed the old cathedral. Nearly eight years passed after the fire be-
fore the ruins of the old building were cleared away and the new work was
begun. When Wren made a start, he picked out a stone from the heap of ru-
ins and found on it a word in Latin which meant "I shall rise again". So he
made that the first stone of the new Cathedral. That was on June 21, 1675.
2. It took him thirty-five years to build the Cathedral. All that time,
while doing many other things besides, he laboured at this – his greatest

work. He was very poorly paid. He didn't always get his wages. But in spite
of these difficulties all was splendidly finished.
3. The Whispering Gallery which is over 100 feet above the floor of
the Cathedral, is remarkable for its acoustics. A person standing at the en-
trance of the Gallery can hear clearly what is said on the opposite side, 107
feet away. Beneath the centre of the dome is the tomb of Lord Nelson killed
at the battle of Trafalgar.
4. Sir Christopher Wren, the great architect of St Paul's, died in 1723,
aged 91, and was buried in the building which his genius and toil had creat-
ed.

Higher Education System in the UK


1. The education system in the UK is divided into four main parts,
primary education, secondary education, further education and higher edu-
cation. Children in the UK have to legally attend primary and secondary
education which runs from about 5 years old until the student is 16 years
old.
2. The UK has a vast variety of higher education opportunities to offer
students with over 100 universities offering various degree programs for
students from the UK and around the world.
3. Higher education is provided by three main types of institutions:
universities, colleges and institutions of higher education and art and music
colleges. All universities are autonomous institutions, particularly in matters
relating to courses. They are empowered by a Royal Charter or an Act of
Parliament.
4. Most universities are divided into faculties which may be subdivid-
ed into departments. Many colleges and institutions of higher education are
the result of mergers of teacher training colleges and other colleges. Non-
university higher education institutions also provide degree courses, various
non-degree courses and postgraduate qualifications. Some may offer Higher
Degrees and other qualifications offered by most non-university higher edu-
cation institutions are validated by external bodies such as a local university
or the Open University.
5. Students who have completed a first degree are eligible to under-
take a postgraduate degree, which might be a Master's degree which is typi-
cally taken in one year, though research-based master's degrees may last for
two and a Doctorate which is typically taken in three years. Postgraduate
education is not automatically financed by the state.

Oxford University
The University of Oxford is located in the UK city of Oxford. It is the
oldest university in the English-speaking world. There is no clear date of
foundation, but historians believe that teaching existed at Oxford in 1096.
The University grew rapidly from 1167 when Henry II banned English stu-
dents to study at the University of Paris.
The University is made up from a variety of institutions, including col-
leges and a full range of academic departments. There are 38 colleges of the
University of Oxford and 6 Permanent Private Halls, each with its own in-
ternal structure and activities. All resident students, and most academic staff,
must be members both of a college or hall, and of the university. The col-
leges join together as the Conference of Colleges to discuss policy and to
deal with the central University administration.

Higher Education in the USA

1. Many students, upon finishing high school, choose to continue their


education. The system of higher education includes 4 categories of institu-
tions. The community college is financed by the local community in differ-
ent professions. Tuition fees are low in these colleges, that's why about
40 per cent of all American students of higher education study at these col-
leges. On graduation from such colleges American students can start to
work or may transfer to four -year colleges or universities.
2. The technical training institution offers graduates to take courses
which last from six months to three-four years. Students can learn different
technical skills such as design business, computer programming, accounting,
etc.
3. The four-year college is not a part of a university. The graduates
receive the degree of Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS).
There are also small Art Colleges, which grant degrees in such fields as bal-
let, film-making and even circus performance. There are also Pedagogical
Colleges.
4. The university may contain several colleges for students who want
to receive a bachelor's degree after four years of study. There are 156 uni-
versities in the USA.
5. Any of these institutions of higher education may be either public
or private. The public institutions are financed by state. Most of the students,
about 80 per cent, study at public institutions of higher education, because
tuition fees here are much lower. Some of the best-known private universi-
ties are Harvard, Yale and Princeton. It is not easy to enter a college at a
leading university in the United States.

Higher Education in Russia


1. The Russian educational system is one of the advanced educational
systems in the world. Higher education is provided by public and non-public
higher education institutions. There are two levels of higher education: basic
higher education and postgraduate higher education.
2. Basic higher education lasts 4 years and graduates get the Bache-
lor's degree. Postgraduate higher education lasts 5–6 years. After two years
students receive a Magistr's or Master's degree. Students can continue to

British Traditions and Customs


British nation is considered to be the most conservative in Europe. It is
not a secret that every nation and every country has its own customs and
traditions. In Great Britain people attach greater importance to traditions and
customs than in other European countries. Englishmen are proud of their
traditions and carefully keep them up. The best examples are their queen,
money system, their weights and measures.
There are many customs and some of them are very old. There is, for
example, the Marble Championship, where the British Champion is
crowned; he wins a silver cup known among folk dancers as Morris Danc-
ing. Morris Dancing is an event where people, worn in beautiful clothes
with ribbons and bells, dance with handkerchiefs or big sticks in their hands,
while traditional music- sounds.
Another example is the Boat Race, which takes place on the river
Thames, often on Easter Sunday. A boat with a team from Oxford Univer-
sity and one with a team from Cambridge University hold a race.
British people think that the Grand National horse race is the most ex-
citing horse race in the world. It takes place near Liverpool every year.
Sometimes it happens the same day as the Boat Race takes place, sometimes
a week later. Amateur riders as well as professional jockeys can participate.
It is a very famous event.
