Purpose
When analyzing a Siebel Application performance case, sometimes it would be necessary to generate
Performance Monitor (Perfmon) information into a log file.

Scope and Application

This document is informational and intended for any user.
How can users generate Performance Monitor information into a log file?
Performance Monitor is a tool for measuring the performance of a computer running Windows 2000 / NT /
2003. It is possible to analyze the behavior of some objects, such as processors, memory, cache,
threads, and processes. Each of these objects has an associated set of counters that provide information
about device usage, queue lengths, delays, and information used to measure throughput and internal
congestion.

This information can be stored into a log file to be later analyzed.

Windows NT Instructions:

1. Start the Siebel Application Server but do not start the test case yet.

2. From the Windows NT Start menu, select Programs > Administrative Tools > Performance
Monitor.

3. From the Performance Monitor menu, select View > Log.

4. Select Edit > Add To Log.

5. Select the objects to be analyzed. To select more than one object, hold the “Control” (Ctrl) key.
On this example, Memory, Process and Processor have been selected.

6. After selecting the objects, click the “Add” and then “Done”.

7. Select Options > Log, choose a directory where the log file will be written; inform “Filename” and
“Periodic Update”. On this example, the log file will be written into c:\temp directory as
Perfmon_05062002.log and the interval period is 15 seconds.

8. Start the test case now.

9. Click “Start Log” and the performance monitor information will be written into the log file specified.
Note that the status should show “Collecting”.

10. When enough information has been collected, select Option > Log and click “Stop log”.

11. The status should be changed to “Closed”.

12. Provide the log file generated to Siebel Technical Support.

Windows 2000 Instructions:

1. Start the Siebel Application Server but do not start the test case yet.

2. From the Windows 2000, select Start menu > Programs > Administrative Tools > Performance.

3. In the “Tree” tab, go to “Performance Logs and Alerts” > Counter Logs.

4. Select Action > New Log Settings and give it a name.

5. Add the objects to be analyzed with “All counters” and “All instances” selected.

6. Choose interval time. On this example, 15 seconds.

7. In the “Log Files” tab, choose a location. On this example, c:\temp directory has been chosen.
Note that you may choose the “End file name with” option.

8. Start the test case now.

9. Click “Apply” and then click “OK”.

10. When enough information has been collected, click in the “Log settings” that has been created
(on this example, PerfmonSiebel) and select Action > Stop.

11. Provide the log file generated to Siebel Technical Support.

Windows 2003 Instructions:

1. Start the Siebel Application Server but do not start the test case yet.

2. From the Windows 2003, select Start menu > Programs >Administrative Tools > Performance.

3. In the “Tree” tab, go to “Performance Logs and Alerts” > Counter Logs.

4. Select Action > New Log Settings and give it a name.

5. Click on ‘Add Counters...’ button.

6. Add the objects to be analyzed with “All counters” and “All instances” selected.

7. Choose interval time. On this example, 15 seconds.

8. In the “Log Files” tab, click on ‘Configure...’ button to browse and choose a location.

On this example, c:\temp directory has been chosen. Note that you may choose the “End file names with”
option.

9. Start the test case now.

10. Click “Apply” and then click “OK”.

11. When enough information has been collected, click in the “Log settings” that has been created
(on this example, PerfmonSiebel) and select Action > Stop.

12. Provide the log file generated to Siebel Technical Support.

Additional Information:

Adjust the interval time according to the period that is going to be analyzed. The file size depends on the
number of processors that the machine has and the number of processes running. For example:

1. In a single processor machine with Windows 2000 / 2003:

Number of processes running: 34

File generated: around 2.6 Mb
Interval time: 15 seconds
Collecting period: 15 minutes

2. In a single processor machine with Windows NT 4.0:

Number of processes running: 36

File generated: around 0.6 Mb
Interval time: 15 seconds
Collecting period: 15 minutes
