Chapter 1

Prophetic Understanding

What is prophecy? Prophecy is the heart and will of God

expressed through the person God has designated as His
mouthpiece. It is inspired communication from God and comes
from the Hebrew word naba meaning to flow, boil up and gush
forth. Most people rely on the truth that Word of Knowledge and
operating in Word of Wisdom are both prophecy alone. They are
not! Just because you have prophesied fifteen times in a row does
not make you a prophet or an accurate mouthpiece from God.
There is a difference between a person who is an ordained
prophet versus the spirit of prophecy resting upon a person to
speak as God leads. For instance let’s take Jeremiah as an
example. God specifically spoke to him about his divine mission
on the earth. God spoke to him saying,

Before I formed you in the belly, I knew you and before you came
out of the womb I sanctified you and ordained you a prophet unto
the nations. Jeremiah was an ordained into the office as a
prophet before ever being born on earth. (Jeremiah 1:5)

To engage in the true understanding of the prophetic we must

first start with the four realms of prophecy.

1
PROPHETIC BASICS

The first realm of prophecy is the prophecy of scripture.

Knowing this first that no prophecy of the scripture is of any

private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in the old time
by the will of man but the Holy men of God spake as they were
moved by the Holy Ghost. (II Peter 1:20-21)

God’s word is the first prophecy that we must first seek to

understand. It contains no errors, mistakes or imperfections.
Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary defines the Word of God as an
inspired supernatural influence without the mixture of error. The
Bible has falsehoods but no errors! The Greek word is logos,
which in its literal meaning is the highest and purest form of the
written word of God but is not the same as oral prophecy.

The second realm of prophecy is the spirit of prophecy.

The spirit of prophecy can fall on a person when they are in the
atmosphere of a prophetic flow. It is the anointing of the Holy
Spirit that enables a person who does not have the gifts of
prophecy or the office of a prophet to speak under the inspiration
of God. Thus, there is an atmosphere created that is conducive to
prophesying and operating the manifested Word of the Lord. Any
person who may not necessarily be a true prophet can operate in
this atmosphere to bring forth the Word of the Lord. Once the
anointing of the Holy Spirit left Saul he still prophesied
accurately because of the spirit of prophecy in the atmosphere
was accessed. God can use somebody who is willing and his or
her unction will release a powerful presence of God.

2
PROPHETIC BASICS

The third realm of prophecy is the gift of prophecy.

The gift of prophecy is given to certain believers and is not the

preaching of the word of God. Enaggelizo is the Greek word
meaning to preach, announce the good news and to declare a
particular message of good tidings. It is reflected in I Corinthians
9:16. This is different from the Greek word Prophetia or
Prophesy that means to predict, foretell events or to speak under
divine inspiration and give a divine revelation from God. When a
person is operating in the gift of prophecy they are supernaturally
enabled through the Holy Spirit to speak a word of wisdom,
knowledge, operate in prophetic discernment or prophecy. It is
imperative to remember that not all preachers have the gift of
prophecy and it is not the same as the ministering of preaching.

For to one is given by the Spirit the Word of Wisdom; to another

the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; to another faith by the
same spirit, to another gifts of healing by the same Spirit, to
another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another
discerning of spirits, to another divers kinds of tongues to
another the interpretation of tongues. But all these worketh that
one and the self-same Spirit, dividing to every man severally as
He wills. ( I Corinthians 12:8-10

“Those with the gift of prophecy should not be encouraged to move

prophetically outside of their realm of edification, exhortation and comfort.”
Frank Damazio, Developing the Prophetic Ministry.

Many people confuse Word of Knowledge and Word of Wisdom.

Let’s discuss the difference:

Word of Knowledge is knowledge in a phrase that describes one

of the nine manifestations of the Holy Spirit where the Spirit of
God delivers information or knowledge supernaturally. It is
3
PROPHETIC BASICS

information that you may not ordinarily know. In many cases the
word can be just that a word, or a short phrase, or single word
sentences that provide information for the hearer to act on while
being used of God. It is the supernatural revelation by the Spirit
of God of facts in the mind of God concerning people places or
things. It is always in the past or present tense.

Word of Wisdom is the communication of the Holy Spirit that

tends to emerge more elaborately. The information given is more
of a practical sort rather than revelatory or predictive and it is tied
to specific circumstances that the hearer may be facing. Word of
Wisdom can also be an understanding of something that
previously happened or that you have not encountered. With a
Word of Wisdom you will usually be given the “How To” of a
situation, especially if it is tied into a prophecy.

The fourth realm of prophecy is the office of the prophet.

Prophets are vessels from God that function consistently and

accurately in at least two of the revelatory gifts: Word of
Wisdom, Word of Knowledge, Discernment of Spirits,
Confirmation, Revelation, Illumination, Prophetic Utterance,
Prediction, Visions, Correction and Ministry Confirmation.

Here is a quick reminder of the five fold ministry and what they
do.

And he gave some apostles and some

prophets and some evangelists and some
pastors and teachers. For the perfecting of the
saints, for the work of the ministry, for the
edifying of the Body of Christ. (Ephesians
4:11)
Thumb- The Apostle gives the balance and
holds things together.

4
PROPHETIC BASICS

Pointer- The Prophet points the way through correction and

edification.
Tall Finger- The Evangelist reaches the furthest with ministry to
the world.
Ring Finger- The Pastor is married to the church and is there to
shepherd and guide.
Pinky Finger- The Teacher attends to the small details making
sure that the flock gets precept upon precept.

Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge. If
anything be revealed to another that sits by, let him first hold his
peace. For ye may all prophesy one by one that all may learn and
all may be comforted. And the spirits of the prophets are subject
to the prophets. (I Corinthians 14:29-32)

Not everyone who has the ability to prophesy is a prophet. In

Acts 21:9-14 you see two instances of prophecy being revealed.
First let’s look at the four daughters of Philip. They operated in
the simple gift of prophecy and more than likely created a
presbytery to prophesy the Word of the Lord, and then later in the
scripture you see where Paul mentions Agabus who operated
fully in the office of the prophet. Paul encourages the entire
church to covet to prophesy in I Corinthians 14:1 Then he gives
the definition of what simple prophecy is in verse three “But he
that prophesies, speaketh unto men to edification, exhortation
and comfort”.

Chapter 2

How can I be sure I am a Prophet?

The characteristic of a true prophet requires spiritual maturity and

monitoring ones’ hearing ability, accuracy, and clearness of heart,
emotions, motives and skillful technique. In its original intent prophecy is
not to be manipulated or presumed but to be shared with love, authenticity,
care and Godly character. It is not for the novice but for those who are
anointed. Signs and wonders will follow those who have submitted to
training and a regimented lifestyle of obedience to God. A true prophet is
committed to the Kingdom of God.
– Prophetess Tyear McCrary

There are nine signs in determining whether or not you are a

prophet.

• You possess a burning desire to minister to the Body of

Christ. This is not just a casual invitation to Christ but one
that is a great excitement to actually see people walk in
the faith-filled promises of God. You may be one who
constantly warns people of the traps of enemy or you have
a desire to constantly encourage and build them up.
• Not many people share your enthusiasm or burden for
ministry. You will get discouragement from others not to
“rock the boat”, or take the safe road and do something
else. If you have been rejected, ostracized or accused of
going against the general flow then there is a good chance
that the early signs of ministry have begun to flow in your
life.

6
PROPHETIC BASICS

• Your desire is for others to succeed more than yourself.

You will gladly give up things that are important to you
so that other people may benefit from your actions. You
are servant-minded and it is likely to cost you a lot.
• Over a period of time you find yourself ministering to a
particular area of need more than others. You always
seem to be ministering to those who need encouragement
and direction in their lives
• People are commenting on how much you have helped
them when you weren’t so aware of your actions.
Sometimes others can see your ministry more clearly than
you.
• You feel unqualified to do the work of the Lord and
usually feel unworthy to push yourself forward. When
appeals are made for help you wait for everyone else to
step forward first before you offer your services.
• You possess the heart of an intercessor you tend to spend
a lot of time praying for others.
• You have the ability to usher in the anointing in a church
meeting. Often praise & worship leaders can cause this
type of move of God.
• You have suffered preparation for prophetic ministry for
several years by being battered, broken and brought to
nothing and taught how to trust God for everything.

7
PROPHETIC BASICS

Once you have examined the call of God on your life it is

imperative that you realize prophetic ministry is never about you!

And these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to

myself and to Apollos for your sakes, that ye might learn in us
not to think of men above that which is written, that none of you
be puffed up for one against another. (I Corinthians 4:6)

The call comes from God and not you. If not consistently on
guard the enemy will puff you up to make you believe that you
are more than what you really are and it will cause arrogance to
fester in your life. You must be careful to only say what God is
saying!

Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their

trust in Him. Do not add to His words lest He rebuke you and you
be found to be a liar. (Proverbs 30:5)

God will expose anyone who claims to have a word of prophecy

from him and does not. It is a very dangerous place to believe
that you alone are able to access this information without the
anointing of God. You must continuously stay connected to the
Spirit of God by reading His Word and Praying in the Holy Spirit
to operate on an accurate and consistent basis.

A true prophet of God must possess something I like to call

“prophetic competence”. You must be processed to be 100%
accurate. If you are human you have the ability to error. Beware
that there is a dangerous pitfall of the “lying spirit” that can
attack a prophet. (Read the Story of Micaiah who would not
allow this spirit to come out of his mouth II Chronicles 18).

8
PROPHETIC BASICS

When you are prophesying and God shows you something do not
give your own interpretation he shows you based on what makes
sense. Remember the word tells us that you understand in part
and prophesy in part. Don’t compare yourself to anyone else. Be
very careful it is all right to be in the process. It takes time to get
seasoned – Ten years of being trained, submitted, mentored,
faithfulness will prepare you as a seasoned prophet. The process
will break you down and get you chastened and ready for God’s
use as His mouthpiece.

9
PROPHETIC BASICS

Chapter 3

Prophetic Sensitivity & Mindset

As a prophet you may notice that you are sensitive to everything.

No one can hurt or get hurt like a prophet but understand there is
a vaccination in the spirit that is needed and you have to mature
and grow up to receive it. True prophetic officers are trained
always to be sensitive to what the Lord is saying. The prophets’
responsibility is to always speak as God is speaking. A prophet
must also have the heart for the sheep. You are the mail carrier of
the spoken will of God-it is your responsibility to deliver
regardless of the emotions you may want to attach to the word
God is speaking. You cannot be emotional or console the
recipient and babysit them through the process. Just deliver the
message! God will give you a way to tell them how to fulfill the
request he is asking of the hearer. Always remember to never
prophesy mad or out of pain or based on pre-gathered
information you receive from a human source. Moses smote the
rock because he was caught up in his emotions. He was supposed
to speak to it! It is very easy to need the validation of others,
don’t be swayed by their personal evaluations of what you said.
You are there to give a life-giving sustaining word. It is
imperative that the word you give-evokes life. Everyone can
have a moment of “genius”. It still takes training and anointing
to minister accurately in public meetings outside of a one on one
basis.

10
PROPHETIC BASICS

Every word has the ability to operate in two realms/two powers:

To bring it to pass or to war against it!

When you give or receive a prophetic word it will usually reflect

the opposite.

For example, let’s reflect on the story of Noah. God spoke to him
that it would rain and he also gave him the plan to be safe when
the word finally came to pass. Imagine if Noah never took God
seriously because all he saw was sunny days. When God speaks a
word or a warning there will always be “days of contradiction”.
The promise is for an appointed time- if you make mistakes in
your delivery you could cause the word to be delayed! When the
Lord gives you something just say what God says and leave it
alone. A doubting spirit can cause you to second guess what you
heard, so say what God says only and leave your opinions out of
it. If you are a true prophet you will encounter people who will
not believe you. You better know that it is God before you speak.
The bible clearly states, “Signs and Wonders shall follow them
that believe”. You cannot speak the thing unless you believe it
will come to pass. Have confidence and based on your account
with God you can ask God for something that does not exist and
have the power to get it.

“Once someone has gained access to heaven’s hidden treasuries,

prayer and belief in prophetic utterance shape and conform their
request to divine purpose”.
Dr. Paula Price—Church Prophets

11
PROPHETIC BASICS

When prophesying you must be mindful of the spiritual climate

of your surroundings. Witches and Sorcerers and those who delve
in cultic or satanic activities will be attracted to your anointing.
They will come and attempt to distract you and manipulate your
time of ministry. Be wise in addressing that spirit. Make sure you
are a clean house before you go in for the kill. You don’t want to
get manipulated in the process and embarrass the kingdom of
God.

12
PROPHETIC BASICS

Chapter 4

Prophet vs. Psychic

Prophet- is a true spokesperson for God solely reliant upon the

Lord to speak through and to them.

Psychic- operates through the Prophetic Divination, predictive

prophecy and manipulation.

When prophesying you must learn how to understand your

prophetic stream. Is it evil, about death, bareness, and famine?
Your stream is what is in you, your issue. Your prophetic stream
is the collection of words that God causes you to embody to bring
faith and a word at that appropriate time. When you mix your
stream you mix prophecy & divination. You tend to pick up
God’s voice then allow other voices in the vicinity to affect you.

What is divination? Divine power words in the spirit realm

given by a spirit other than God! If you don’t have specific
discernment and prophetic learning you’ll take any voice and call
it God because you don’t know the difference. It is imperative
that you make sure you are not bringing a curse through a fallen
angel or by what is known as a demonic influence.

True Prophets avoid the pitfall of prophetic manipulation...

13
PROPHETIC BASICS

Manipulation is the act of “controlling the will and the emotions

of another person by exploiting feelings, such as guilt or
affection, to ones own ends; shrewd or devious effort to manage
or influence for one’s own purposes, to appropriate or to control
by skilled use.” The most serious pitfall awaiting those who
minister in the prophetic is the temptation to manipulate people
and circumstances with the gift of prophecy. Prophetic people
who are rich in emotion and abundantly gifted can readily arouse
people’s interests and stir their hearts. Their capacity to hear
from God allows them to serve as powerful magnets, drawing to
themselves those who thirst for a word from God. As a result
they quickly win accolades and favor, making it easy for them to
manipulate most believers. This stands in direct opposition to the
purpose of the prophetic. Prophetic ministers are called to
support and confirm the will of God in people’s lives not to
manipulate them.

Excerpt from Developing Prophetic Accuracy, by Dr. John

Tetsola, pg 43.

Recognizing Prophetic Deception

Beloved believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they
are of God, because many false prophets are gone out into the
world. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God; every spirit that
confesses that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God. And
every spirit that confesses not that Jesus Christ is come in the
flesh is not of God; and this is the spirit of the antichrist, whereof
ye have heard that it should come, and even now already is in the
world. I John 4:1-3

14
PROPHETIC BASICS

There will be people who will mishandle and misappropriate the

information that they receive. It’s called filibustering. They will
give you a little bit of the word to hook you then give you their
opinion and will deceive you or better yet they will say God said
to cater to your emotions and God did not. Let’s take for example
the story of the women God showed Ezekiel who were
prophesying out of their own heart.

Likewise son of man set thy face against the daughters of thy
people, which prophesy out of their own heart, and prophesy thou
against them. And say, thus saith the Lord God, Woe to the
women that sew pillows to all armholes, and make kerchiefs upon
the head of every stature to hunt souls! Will you hunt the souls of
my people, and will you save the souls alive that have come unto
you? And will ye pollute me among my people for handfuls of
barley and for pieces of bread, to slay the souls that should not
die, and to save the souls alive that should not live by your lying
to my people that hear your lies? Because with lies you have
made the heart of the righteous sad, whom I have not made sad;
and strengthened the hands of the wicked, that he should not
return from his wicked way, by promising him life. Therefore you
shall see no more vanity nor divine divinations for I will deliver
my people out of your hand, and ye shall know that I am the
Lord. Ezekiel 13:17-19,22-23.

15
PROPHETIC BASICS

Prophesying out of your heart or selling the anointing to win the

approval of people automatically disqualifies you for prophetic
ministry. God cannot trust you to deliver His Word and you will
fall into the dangerous trap of prophetic deception and divination.

False Prophets & Diviners

There shall not be found among you anyone that makes his son or
daughter to pass through fire, or that uses divination, or an
observer of times, an enchanter, or a witch. For all these things
are an abomination unto the Lord and because of these
abominations the Lord thy God will drive them out before thee.
(Deuteronomy 18:10-12)

*Please take God seriously he hates liars, propha-liars and those

who use divination to sway his people.

Prophetic Divination
A term applied to wannabe prophets habitually speaking the
obvious and usually prophecies that use natural observances or
prior knowledge for their delivery. Perceptual prophecies are a
favorite of such ministers. Perceptual prophesying is that which
springs from the messenger’s mental opinions of the subject of
their words.

Examples of this are quite obvious in perceiving outward

character to be prophetic. For instance, two people sitting next to
each other does not automatically mean that they are married.
This simple error can produce perceptual prophesying where the
word or the messages are the product of the prophet’s private
interpretations, empirical deductions and personal conclusions.

And my hand shall be against the prophets who see empty, false,
and delusive visions and who give lying prophecies. They shall
not be in the secret council of my people, nor shall they be
recorded in the register of the house of Israel, nor shall they

16
PROPHETIC BASICS

enter into the land of Israel, and you shall know that I am the
Lord God. (Ezekiel 13:9)

Prophetic Divination earns its title by relying on objects, the

tangible and the physical to the deliver the Word of the Lord.
Birth dates, handling personal objects, or querying individuals at
a gathering before a meeting for later prophetic ministry are other
tactics that support it. In addition prophetic divination is
chronically humanist and secular in scope. It is totally the product
of what is in the heart of the prophet. Supposition, opinions,
theology, and religious traditions figure prominently in these
types of messages.

Its hedge judge for a reward and a bribe and its priests teach for
hire and its prophet’s divine money; yet they lean on the Lord
and say, is not the Lord among us? No evil can come upon us.
(Micah 3:11)

God will not be mocked, diviners, witches, and those who

mislead God’s people will suffer his wrath in Hell and God will
deal with them harshly. You can find out about their demise in
Jeremiah 33.

Know the difference between the Spirit of God and the Familiar
Spirit.

A Familiar Spirit is a divining demon working through a person.

It is a distinct class of spiritual beings credited with empowering
and dispensing the wisdom of the dead or demonic influence. It
comes from the Latin root famulus, which is defined as an
attendant. Familiar spirits are deceiving spirits that are of evil
character. You don’t have to be afraid or scared off because of
an evil familiar spirits that is in operation. They are familiar with
people that they communicate with and the one in whom they
operate through. One example is when people claim to be able to

17
PROPHETIC BASICS

communicate with the dead. Or they say a loved one appeared to

me and gave me direction on a specific issue, post burial.

In the worship setting a familiar spirit can come in as a

counterfeit to the anointing and move of the Holy Spirit. For
example in Exodus chapter seven after God led Israel out of
Egypt and Aaron threw down the rod and it turned into a serpent,
the magicians did the same thing, however Aaron’s rod
swallowed up the rods/serpents of the other magicians. God will
always prevail and he can top anything the devil can do.

Wherefore I give to you to understand, that no man speaking by

the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed, and that no man can say
that Jesus is Lord, but by the Holy Spirit. (I Corinthians 12:3)

In context, this scripture simply means that when the Holy Spirit
is in operation He will always point to Jesus as Lord and not man.
A familiar spirit will exalt man and attract to the human and not
God. In discerning the difference you must ask the questions.
Does the manifestation of the spirit operating bring glory to
Jesus? Does it bring blessing to people? Does it bring them
nearer to God? Or does the manifestation bring glory to man and
exalt man along with God. The devil is not trying to be God he is
trying to be equal with God.

God is a Spirit, they that worship him must worship him in spirit
and in truth. (John 4:24)

Chapter 5

Developing Your Prophetic Ministry

“For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all

churches of the saints”. (I Corinthians 14:3)

It requires Spiritual Maturity & Prophetic Integrity.

Prophetic Integrity is the deliberate decision of a prophet to
adhere to and perform according to the biblical, ethical and moral
standards for the sake of God’s glory and the benefit of those
served by the ministry.

Release your faith to prophesy!

You must constantly hear & study the Word. The greater the
faith, not presumption of a Christian enables you to access the
greater the depth of prophecy.

Flow with the Holy Spirit!

As you yield to the Holy Spirit and listen you will grow in the
prophetic anointing. Move at the right time. Prophesying anytime
you want to is inappropriate. Know the move of the meeting.
Make sure the “Word from God” is not solely for you first. A
good way to be perfected in timing is to be observant or mentored
by a “seasoned” prophet.

Discern your thoughts from the Holy Spirit’s voice.

Jesus rebuked Peter for allowing Satan to speak through him.
Be aware not to open yourself up to interpretation & divination.
Cleanse your heart and renew your mind. (Romans 12:1-3, I Cor
10:1-6).

Cultivate a hunger.

19
PROPHETIC BASICS

You must a have a true desire to see it operate with full

manifestation and power with unselfish reasons.

Be sensitive to the lifting.

Don’t perform- as soon as the will of the father is communicated.
STOP! (If you have the microphone, pass it and Sit Down).

Speak Boldly. (Proverbs 28:1, Philip 1:14, Eph 6:19-20) Don’t

be afraid.

Fear the Lord- Don’t Lie on Him.(Ezekiel 13:6-7), (Eph 5:21)

Examine Yourself

Check your motives (II Corinthians 13:5)

Avoid carnal ambition (Prov 25:6)
Don’t worry about recognition (Prov 18:6)
Don’t Exalt Yourself or become High Minded (Prov 17:19)
Don’t become enamored about how God used you learn to be
more humble than anything. (I Peter 5:6)

Don’t monopolize the time. (Prov 18:12)

Get rid of the Cliché. Don’t give into popular antics of others.

Don’t use “The Lord said” loosely. (I Sam 3:19). In the Old
Testament the Hebrews believed that when the name Yahweh
was uttered that something exciting and dynamic was about to
happen. It was never used as an attention getter or to manipulate.

Chapter 6

Prophetic Gifting VS. Prophetic Anointing

Once the Word of Wisdom began to operate in my life I could

see and hear in the realm of the spirit. By age 13 the three
revelation gifts---discerning of spirit, word of knowledge and
prophecy operated in my life on a consistent basis. That’s when
I stepped into the prophetic office. But, even then, I didn’t
stand in the prophet’s office publicly until 2004. -Prophetess
Tyear McCrary

Prophetic Gifting is a word commonly understood as the native

traits and endowments prophets receive from God to do their
jobs. Prophetic gifting speaks more to natural talents and
instincts prospective prophets are born with more than their
enhancement upon elevation to the prophets’ office. Once this
happens the gifts take a more official operational condition.
They are now solid tools, weapons, and implements rather than
soft talents used at the discretion of the user outside the exercise
of the prophet’s mantle. More than that prophetic gifts start out
being intermittent, unreliable expressions used causally.

Once the training, development, and practice needed for

prophetic competence is complete, the gifts are transformed into
resources the prophet draws on to accomplish the purposes
assigned to his or her mantle.

Prophetic Anointing on the other hand is a term that applies to the

move of the Holy Spirit within a person to move them to
prophesy. The prophetic anointing is typical equipment for the
official prophet, the psalmist, the seer and the intercessor. When
the Holy Spirit manifests in one of the children of God, the
prophetic anointing and the words of wisdom and knowledge
manifest. The prophetic anointing is tangibly felt in the

21
PROPHETIC BASICS

abdomen, the heart as a burning, the belly which the Lord Jesus
made reference to in John 7:38, and the intestines—what people
recognize as a gut instinct and in many instances unshakeable.
All the early prophets talk about the fire in the belly or burning in
the joints. Others talk about the pounding within to signify the
activation of the word of the Lord. They, as well as an inner
movement that precedes the utterance of prophecy further refer to
a moving of the bowels.

When the Lord Speaks Through A Prophet…

The words of the Lord are pure words as silver tried in a furnace
of the earth, purified seven times. Thou shall keep them, Oh Lord;
thou shall preserve them from this generation forever. Psalms
12:6-7

True prophecy will come to pass. Your responsibility is to pray,

watch and expect God’s word to come to pass if it lines up with
what the Bible says. Please remember that personal prophecy is
not fixed or automatic. You are responsible for its fulfillment or
failure according to Luke 8:15b after having heard the word keep
it and bring forth fruit with patience. You can act in obedience to
God’s Word to you or you can operate in carnal rebellion. You
must obey the direct commands of the prophecy that has been
given. God does not violate your free will. It takes your faith and
participation. You must be careful not to allow the devil to
discourage you, confuse your mind and steal from your heart the
word that God has spoken to you through the prophet.

Beloved believe not every spirit but try the spirits whether they
are of God, because many false prophets are gone out into the
world. (I John 4:1)

Ask yourself these questions after you receive a word from the
prophet to weigh what has been spoken.
22
PROPHETIC BASICS

• Have I received this through prayer?

• Can I bear witness to what has been spoken?
• Does it line up with the Word of God?
• Have I taken the time to meditate and wait for this word?
• Is this confirmation of something God has already spoken
to me?
• Does this build me up, strengthen and encourage?
• Was the word presented with Love?
• Does the person speaking reflect the true character of
God?

All of these questions combined will help you to test the word
that has been given to you. Be careful not to over-analyze but use
discernment and wisdom when receiving or giving a Word from
Lord. Just remember that time is the barometer of truth and
accuracy to your prophetic word. Once you have received a
prophetic word and you have weighed it with the questions
above, time will have to work its way in your life and cause a
manifestation to come. Many people hinge their future on a
prophetic word. There are some things that God gives us a choice
in. Be very careful and mature in discerning when God will honor
your will versus interjecting His will for your life that is not
debatable.

Despise not prophesying. Prove all things; hold fast that which is
good. But test and prove all things until you recognize what is
good; to that hold fast. (I Thessalonians 5:20-21). AMP

23
PROPHETIC BASICS

What do you do when you have received what you believe is an

accurate prophecy and it does not come to pass after you have
followed the directions you were given? The answer is table it
and be in prayer about the situation and if it is dated on (June 16,
1980 you are going to have a baby boy) And it does not come to
pass that person may have missed it. So you need to move on
with your life. Prophets are human and subject to error if they are
not seasoned or make the mistake of trying to interpret what they
hear and or see.

Chapter 7

The Prophetic Assignment

“God never ask you to do anything that you can’t do. It is your
will to do so. When you respect what God says to you,
obedience is not an option”.-Prophetess Tyear McCrary

One of the most important things you can do in regard to

fulfilling your purpose in life is to discover your assignment. If
someone gives you a map and tells you the proximity of where
the treasure is, it is up to you to follow the signs and get what is
yours. You must get a desperate glimpse of your potential. You
know what God has for you. Get the exact plan and specifics.
Then become excited and passionate about it and take it
seriously. Find ways to make it happen.

“Push down the doors---remember you cannot look at a door

and determine whether or not it is open. A closed door is not
always a locked door. If you add a twist to it, it will open for
you.” -Prophetess Tyear McCrary

You must take the responsible stance that the world is depending
upon you. What would your life look like if you have not done
what God had said? You will flourish when you are in your
assignment. Ask yourself the simple questions of: Where am I
supposed to be? What am I supposed to be doing? How will I get
it done? Revisit these questions and keep the vision before you.

Know your position

What is your ranking in the spirit realm? Does the enemy say to
you Jesus I know, but you I do not? In order to fulfill your
prophetic assignment that is spoken into your life or operate in
the anointing that you need to speak into others you must walk in
the spirit on a continuous basis. Spend time studying the word,
praying in the spirit, spending time in intercessory prayer for

25
PROPHETIC BASICS

others, fasting, and cultivating the words that have been spoken
into the earth.

Don’t get distracted by life’s circumstances, new levels require

mastery of new devils. Be responsible, be consistent and mature
in fasting, reading and prayer. This is God’s spiritual diet to get
all the led out and cleanse you of the impurities in the spirit and
in the natural. He wants to reveal you to you, so that you won’t
have to be exposed by others. This is His way of bringing order
to your life. Your obedience will outweigh the sacrifice. Listen
for the direction of the Holy Spirit; don’t place God in a box.
Meditate on His Word, keep your focus and finish the work that
God has created for you to do.

I have fought the good fight. I have finished my course. I have

kept the faith. (II Timothy 4:7)

Prophecy Revealed

“Zeal without knowledge will be a catastrophe.”

-Prophetess Tyear McCrary

Seven Ways of Listening

What God is saying right now? And how is he saying it? You
must realize that prophecy is not always spoken. It is an utterance
in the spirit that is conveyed through the moving and timing of
the Lord. In the Old Testament the way that the Prophets knew
that God was speaking was through the Urim and the Thummim.
The prophets did not have an internal anointing it was only
external. They were totally reliant upon God moving upon them
and giving them a word. You will see several times in the
scripture where prophets would say phrases such as; “The Lord
has hidden this thing from me, I do not know what is happening”.
If God did not give the revelation they would not know what was
going on. The Urim and the Thummim were two stones that
were embedded in the breastplate of the ephod worn by the priest
or they were two stones contained in a pouch that was on the side
of the ephod. Somehow these stones would give external
direction from God. However, there were times when God would
not answer people through this method. This was sort of like
thumbs up or thumbs down depending upon the direction of the
stones. It was not specific, just a yes or a no. After Jesus’
ascension he imparted the Holy Spirit, which serves as our
internal indicator of a yes or no from God. Fortunately, the Holy
Spirit’s job is to guide us into all truth if we are tuned in and
listening.

27
PROPHETIC BASICS

Here are the seven ways prophecy can be revealed to you.

But as it is written, Eye has not seen nor has ear heard, neither
have entered into the heart of man the things which God has
prepared for them that love him. But God has revealed them
unto us by His Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, yea, the
deep things of God. (I Corinthians 2:9-10).

Receiving Out of Your Spirit

The Spirit of God should be connected to your spirit. When you
pray in the Spirit on a consistent basis God will begin to speak
mystery to you out of your Spirit. You will begin to have more
unction’s from the Holy Ghost and hear his voice much clearly.

Dreams & Visions

Dreams are influences that come out of your spirit when you are
asleep. Your spirit is able to communicate through internal and
external dreams. Healing & Purging Dreams can come through
this vehicle also.

Trance Vision is simply an influence that is so strong on you that

your natural senses are suspended so that you do not see or hear
anything that is going on about you. You are taken up in a vision
just as you would be a dream.

Open Vision is when you can look at your surroundings and you
see something else superimposed on your surroundings.

28
PROPHETIC BASICS

Prophetic Utterances
Through tongues and words of prophecy this alone will bring
forth a wellspring of wisdom. When you pray in the Holy Spirit
according to Jude 20 it builds you up and something begins to
take place in the spirit realm. The Holy Spirit operating through
you now is in control and the words that may come through your
mouth will not be from your own understanding. When you need
to hear from God desperately and you need to hear his voice right
now, pray in the Spirit! Also rely on the prophecy to come forth
it can be general or personal. General Prophecy will be a word
that will come in the midst of the service that everyone can latch
on to. Versus personal prophecy when God will speak directly to
you or through you to an individual.

Angels
God will send his Angels to speak to you. This was very popular
in the Bible prior to the arrival of Jesus. God would send
messenger angels to carry out the word of the Lord. An angel
appeared to Mary to tell of the coming of Jesus. There can also
be an angelic influence that can directly come on your mind
without coming via your spirit. God will bring a messenger
externally to give confirmation of His Word.

The Inner Voice

You are going to hear a still small voice when everything is quiet
around you. In I Kings 19, there is an example of how God spoke
to Elijah after he ran away in fear from Jezebel. When he was at
the end of his rope and wanted to give up, he heard a still small
voice. God was then able to get his attention and speaking to
Him. Sometimes God has to wait for you to just sit still. He will
then be able to speak to you in a very quiet, deep and inner voice.

Face-to-Face Relationship

29
PROPHETIC BASICS

Moses saw the presence of the Lord through His Shekinah Glory
being revealed. In Numbers 12:5 it says, And the Lord came
down in the pillar of the cloud and stood in the door of the
tabernacle. What an awesome way to hear from God is when he
shows up through his divine visitation. It is possible for us to
enter a face-to-face relationship with Him in the Spirit, where we
can speak to Him and His Glory will be revealed in your
presence.

Journaling
You must chart your conversations with God and reflect on your
question and what God has spoken to you in the other ways. This
will help you to mirror what He is saying or has said to determine
the accuracy and fulfillment of prophecy in your life or the lives
of others. You may also want to journal your dialogue with God
as he is speaking to you. Remember prayer is conversation not a
monologue.

Chapter 9

Misconceptions of the Prophet’s Office

“Some people who have been called of God, anointed and

equipped by Him to stand in a certain office have thought, “I am
obligated to perform”. So when the Holy Spirit is not in
manifestation, they try to operate something themselves. That is a
dangerous place to get into. If the manifestations are there, fine.
If it is not---don’t try to produce it yourself.”
Kenneth E. Hagin

Many think a prophet is supposed to do nothing but prophesy.

But the foremost ministry of the prophet is to preach or teach the
Word.

Many think the laying on of the hands goes with the prophet’s
ministry.

Many think that a prophet should always know everything about

everyone and everything that is happening round about him. That
could not be so. If it had been so, Gehazi, the servant of Elisha
would have known he didn’t stand a chance in a million of
getting by with what he did (2 Kings 5:20-27) In this story if
Elisha had always known everything about everyone and all that
was going on around him, Gehazi, who was with Elisha
continually, would have known that.

31
PROPHETIC BASICS

The Lord only tells a prophet what he wants him to know. He

does not tell a prophet everything. Other scriptures also indicate
the prophet does not know everything. For example, when the
Shunamite woman came to Elisha the prophet and caught him by
the feet after her son has died, Elisha said,”…her soul is vexed
within her; and the Lord hath hid it from me, and hath not told
me. (2 Kings 4:27)

Some think that because one is a prophet, they can ask him at
anytime. Do you have a word for me? You cannot conjure up
things as you will. God may give you a word and He may not.
The majority of the times He will not.

The following are facts that you should be made aware of:

• FACT: You can grieve the Spirit of God so He won’t

show you anything else because He can’t trust you.

• FACT: If God did call you to an office, you couldn’t step

into it immediately. You’d make a mess of it if you did.
But God will add a little here and a little there. If He does
have in mind to put you in that office, eventually, if you’ll
be faithful, when He sees He can trust you with it, He will
set you in it.

• FACT: The same is true in other offices. If novices were

put into theses offices, Satan would tempt them and they
would be lifted up and destroyed. I think some have been
destroyed because they sensed in their spirits the calling,
but instead of watching for God to set them into that
office, they tried to set themselves into it.

32
PROPHETIC BASICS

I can see the wisdom of God in my own ministry. As a teenage

girl mentally immature as well as spiritually, if I had been thrust
into some offices and places I fill now, I would never have made
it. I would have fallen by the wayside. When God used me, my
head would have gotten so big I couldn’t have walked out of the
door.

Don’t be impressed with name and titles. And don’t go out and
say, “I’m a prophet.” You may be one day, and then again you
may not be. But if you are called to the prophetic office, let God
set you into it. Don’t try to set yourself in a particular office. Be
patient and wait on God to do it. You will know when it is the
correct time.

The word of knowledge, the word of wisdom, discerning of

spirits, as well as prophecy, operate in the office of the prophet.
Because these are spiritual gifts, they will also operate in the life
of any Spirit-filled believer as the need may arise or as the Lord
wills. But the occasional operation of these gifts does not make
one a prophet.

Glossary of Prophetic Terms

Ecclesia
The Greek word for church inducted by Christ into His kingdom
as a term to identify His body of believers. The Spiritual
confederacy of the Creator God. His new creation state; based on
ancient Greek institution compromised of citizens who were
inducted in the organization to handle community business and
collaborate with royalty and government in various judicial,
political and military matters.

Prophet
A divine functionary who serves as the spokesperson for a deity.
Nabi (plural) Nabbiim- Hebrew Prophet, more than one in a
prophetic counsel. (2Sameul 10)
Hozeh- Another word for Chozeh for seer or prophet of the Lord.

Chief Prophet
A senior prophet likely to have charge of trainee prophet
preparation. The head of a company of prophets or a prophetic
school. A prophet with a statewide or higher responsibilities or
duties. Referred to in the Bible as a “man of God” ie: Elijah to
Elisha, Moses to Joshua.

Gifting vs. Operation

In the sphere of the prophetic, the distinctions between these two
is of fundamental importance. Frequently people are said to have
a prophetic gifting, while the Bible more often uses the term
operation. The difference between the two is a matter of
expression over deliberate exertion. Prophetic operations
(Pneumatikos, or prophetic pneumatics) involve applying divine
skill to divine human issues to accomplish pre-determined results
in this world.

34
PROPHETIC BASICS

House Prophet
A term for a prophet who serves in a local church as its’ spiritual
watchman, guardian & covering and they can also be assigned to
a ministry without a church.

Prophetic Mantel
The term for the cloak (Spiritually) worn by the prophets to
designate their authority in their ministry, community and in the
spirit realm. However, the prophets in the Bible such as John and
Elijah wore mantles made from Camel’s hair that were gathered
at the waist with a wide leather belt.

Prophetic Discernment
The ability of the prophet to detect manifestations, influences,
and apparitions or psycho-emotional conditions normally unseen
or overlooked by non-prophetic types. Further an ability of the
prophet’s to recognize and accurately attach prophetic
significance to human affairs and events. Prophetic discernment
is a cultivated gift that relies on experience, exposure to a wide
range of prophetics, and insight into a breadth of human
situations. Collectively, these facilitate the active and accurate
exercise of prophetic ministry.

Scripture Reference:
Luke 12:56 You hypocrites! You know how intelligently to
discern and interpret and prove the looks of the earth and sky; but
how is it that you do not know how to discern and interpret and
apply the proof of this time?

Prophetic Dream
A dream had by a prophet, or by one who is not a prophet,
indicative of a prophecy because of its predictive or revelatory
implications. Prophetic dreams serve the discrete purpose of
being divine and spiritual communication vehicles. Genesis 20:3
35
PROPHETIC BASICS

Prophetic dreams impart visions, deposit God’s words or

establish spiritual truth. They are often used as precursors to a
move of God and confirm something He has just done in the
spirit realm that has yet to appear in physical form.

Prophetic dreams differ from prophetic visions in that the

prophetic dream, though predictive or revelatory in nature, is
communicated in language and symbolism that is relevant to the
dreamer’s sphere of life. Metaphors and parables are delivered
using images and vernacular the dreamer can relate to when
probing the dream upon waking. A prophetic dream, furthermore,
is one in which, upon waking, the dreamer finds details vividly
etched in his or her mind. The experience of a prophetic dream
means the Lord is implanting a message in the dreamer’s heart or
mind. The familiar emblems of the dream may pertain to the
dreamer’s profession, cultural background or history, family tree,
or experience.

Visions present themselves, although sometimes within a dream,

in language and imagery that is independent of these. This holds
true even if the subject mater of the dream is one to which the
dreamer can relate. Job 33:14-16

Prophetic Economy
A term that describes the unique economic dispensation assigned
to prophetic mantles to be dispensed by the prophet. The
economy is not limited to money dispensed by the prophet. The
economy is not limited to money or wealth, but contains the
administration of the Creator’s supernatural provisions for the
earth that are delegated by Him to His messengers. This is why
the prophet’s mantle unavoidably attracts and releases wealth.
Whatever God’s treasuries hold for the earth, seasoned prophets
through prophesying, teaching, training, and spiritual warfare can
and will dispense. This action lies at the heart of the Bible’s use
of the term dispensation.

36
PROPHETIC BASICS

Prophetic Environment
The setting where prophetic activities are fostered and may freely
operate among a group. A prophetic company, conference,
forum, or summits are all good examples of this. Samuel 10:5,
10-12, and 19:24. Psalmist, prophetic praise, and supernaturally
suggestive teachings are typical catalysts for creating prophetic
environments.

Prophetic Germination
The term for the prophet’s deposit of a word that is destined to
come to pass sometimes in the future. The prophet Isaiah’s
annunciation about the virgin who would bring forth a child is a
good case. The prophecy he gave although the events
surrounding it were completely against its possible fulfillment—
was uttered for one reason: to germinate the ground of creation
and to ignite a foreordained manifestation though ages away in
time. The prophet’s act was watered from time to time by
subsequent prophets who reiterated it. The eminence of prophetic
germination is its saturation of the ground or a sphere of life with
what the Lord ideally ordained to happen even though for a while
He will seem to be doing the contrary. The Lord’s word to
Jeremiah before the deportation of his countrymen is another
example. In the biblical account, the Lord spoke to His prophet
to purchase a piece of land and then to bury a deed in it.

The act, which was an instance of prophetic drama, had the effect
of germinating the ground with the eventual performance of the
word of the Lord to reverse something He was about to do that
seemed to be the direct opposite of what Jeremiah had done. The
act on the part of the prophet was to insure that a seed remained
in Israel’s ground, germinating over time, until the word of the
Lord came to pass. When it did, the prophet who suffered so
brutally at the hands of those who resented and resisted the word
37
PROPHETIC BASICS

would have a right to property otherwise owned by the king of

Babylon.

Prophetic Guard
The term given for the shield of spiritual force that prophets emit
to deflect the assaults and stratagems devil throw at the people of
God. These are very vital in the local churches of today.
Prophetic guards pray, intercede, compel provision manifestation,
and enforce New Testament obedience upon the forces of
darkness.

Prophetic Hedge
A hedge is an enclosure that surrounds an area or territory.
Spiritually it refers to the guardrail prophets create to encircle
their charges. Prophetic hedges extend about their spheres and
changes to shamar (Aramaic for guard-Strongs-8104) them in the
Lord. The hedge is to strengthen those over whom they have
custody and see that what is granted and provided them by God is
released and that their blessing flow is unimpeded. Prophets do
this by keeping the word and will of God fresh and current in
their lives. Through prophesying they also build and strengthen
the hedge, by teaching the true doctrine of God and keeping the
church in the righteousness of Christ. If they are to be effective,
prophets must not allow a spiritual gap (the spiritual condition of
the broken hedge {the situation whereby the hedge of protection
around a person’s life is shattered or removed to allow the enemy
to come in at will to pillage and plunder that life} in human life,
along with all its causative consequences and calamities) They
must guard against sin and call for repentance should it occur.
Once the proper restoration requisites have been performed the
prophet is to instigate resumed worship of the living God.
Failure to do so makes a prophet liable for vulnerability and
attack of the enemy as well as the subversion of those in his or
her care. That failure or dereliction of duty is what the Lord is
citing the prophets of Israel for in Ezekiel 13:5.

38
PROPHETIC BASICS

Prophetic Incubation
A term to describe the season of the separation and often
isolation whereby divine messengers are groomed for service by
the god who called him or her to it. Prophetic incubation is
where the spirit of the prophet is awakened to the calling and
filled with the elements of the ministry. In the past, this
incubation took place in caves or similar underground dwellings;
sometimes they were sent to the wilderness for the same purpose.
Once there, the only life the novice encountered was that of the
deity orientating him or her for service. Visions, dreams, inner
conflicts, and tumultuous wrestling with the opposers
mantles occupy the novices’ time in incubation. During that
time, they are expected to confront and conquer every fear,
inhibition, or resistance arising to resist who and what they are
called to become. The idea of prophetic incubation is that the
initiate would learn the ways of the spiritual world and the means
by which he or she would bring forth prophecy, oracles, and
supernatural emanations of all kinds. Familiarity with the
invisible spheres of creation and the higher unseen powers of the
land/ or the covenant god, as well as the confidence in receiving
and understanding the messages there from are what the
incubation period is to bring about. John the Baptist, Moses, the
apostles and the prophet Elijah all underwent prophetic
incubation. David spent quite a bit of time in the cave of
Adullam before his ascension to the throne of Israel. This
seemingly insignificant situation was customary for anyone who
would rise to positions of power, even though David’s was also
viewed as a hiding place and refuge from Saul’s pursuit.

Prophetic Induction
The series of events largely spiritual and mostly dreams and
visions, the Lord uses to induct or call His prophets into service.
As the time for their installation nears, new prophets find that
39
PROPHETIC BASICS

symbolism and signs play a more obvious role in their lives.

Suddenly they see the unction of their calls in everything. For
this season, whatever they handle and encounter reverberates
back to what the Lord is summoning them to enter into.
Prophetic induction can take a long time before the prophet
actually accepts the call to office. Over the induction period they
find their dream life intensifying, spiritual communications
multiplied , and the gain a heightened awareness that a deeper
understanding of God exists. In addition the prophet discovers
that he or she is confronted dramatically with the prophetic
features of their past culminated in their present. They recall
dreams that were once vague but now are clear. They will
remember spiritual encounters that took place perhaps during
childhood that intrigued them but failed to make sense. Now
under the anointing of the induction those memories rush back
into their minds and the pieces finally come together to make
sense. All those incidences were the mile markers on their road
to their divine destiny. Standing at the crossroads of their
obedience and connection is made. The Lord is surfacing their
prophet’s spirit along with the years of supernatural deposits. He
has been making to use them in official prophetic ministry.
(Jeremiah 1.)

Prophetic Intercession
The term for the peculiar high powered prayers of prophets
whereby revelatory insight, historical experience, and official
authority unite to cause the petition of the prophet to be granted
by God Once heard, the words they utter take on the effect of
altering static situations and conditions that others
may have no affect upon. Prophetic intercession involves prayer,
declarations, commands and decrees, and various supernatural
executive or legislative acts prophets are authorized by the Lord
to influence. These official actions on behalf of the Most High
compel the holds of darkness to release themselves from their
captives, objects, and their possessions. Prophetic intercession
involves the prophets’ intervention, interruption, and interjections
40
PROPHETIC BASICS

interposition and interjection of the will, word and works of God

in a human situation or earthly affair. In a word the prophet’s
intercession licenses the power, authority and sovereignty of the
Lord to be exercised by them.

Prophetic Leadership
The phrase pertains to the unique leadership style, methods and
motivations of the prophets. The office being one of inherent
leadership means that getting God’s tasks and projects done
through His people and moving them forward in the Lord’s
purposes are innate to the position. Prophetic leadership, best
illustrated by Samuel and the other prophets of Scripture over
congregations, tends to be more inflexible and can be more
intrusive than others. Prophecies and revelations aside, with
prophetic leaders, God’s agenda, will and wisdom typically
dominates. Unlike Saul’s attitude toward leadership where the
people’s voices overrule, God, prophetic leaders are God-minded.
They communicate and transmit a fear of the Lord based on fresh
revelations that leaders of the revealed word of God tend to down
play. Prophetic leaders are concerned about knowledge with
spiritual intelligence. They are people developers who see
people’s growth as potential and productive instruments in God’s
hands.

Prophetic leaders are Scripture driven but can also be too ethereal
and somewhat cryptic in their teaching when not grounded in
God’s wisdom. With prophets who are leaders, plans, projects,
and divine direction are important. What God wants to do, when
He wants it done, and the way He wants it done are constant
themes in prophetic leadership to the point of being occasionally
narrow and rigid in their views, inconsiderate of those they assign
tasks and delegate responsibility. A strong pastoral influence
tempers prophetic extremes to balance a prophet’s lofty
spirituality with people-oriented practicality. Order, timeliness,
and structure as well as achievement are important.

41
PROPHETIC BASICS

Prophetic Presbytery ( I Kings 18:20,22)

The term given to the eldership of prophets who minister
collectively to a body. Generally, this group forms a company of
prophets who cast an alliance for the purpose of prophetic
covering and uniform dispensation of the word of the Lord.
Ahab’s contingency of prophets is an example of this as well as
the companies of prophets referred to in Scripture repeatedly.
They are also referred to as the sons of the prophets.

Prophetic Presence
The discernable presence of the prophet’s spirit operating or
apparent in a person. The behavior, conversation, and spiritual
attitude that designates someone as a prophet or called to be one.
The woman Jesus met at the well was impressed with His
prophetic presence. John 4:6-43.

Prophetic Repetitions/Reiteration
The Lord’s practice of repeating and re-sending prophecies to
people to assure they hear and receive His word, comprehend its
effects in their life, and confirm what they heard is true from
Him. Throughout the Bible it is recorded that God sent several
prophets on several occasions to restate a prophecy already heard.
Sometimes, the same prophet will have to keep repeating it
because the hearer fails to take the word seriously or recklessly
rejects the messenger. At other times, the word that may have
come years earlier is ready to come to pass. To remind the
person that what is about to happen to or for them is a direct
result of prophecy. God will send a new rash of prophetic voices
to them to renew the prophecy and condition the hearer for the
word’s manifestation in its time. Later deliveries of the word
may add conditions or stipulations that would have been
meaningless when the prophecy first came forth. Prophetic
repetition and reiteration are often initiated with unique divine
arrangements that set the person up to receive the reiteration.
God supernaturally maneuvers circumstances that place their
addresses before the prophet so they do not miss the timing and

42
PROPHETIC BASICS

the positioning necessary for them to benefit from their long-

standing prophecy.

Prophetic Sign
Images and events that are either received or given by prophets
that betoken or more significant events to come.

Prophetic Songs
Prophecy delivered in melodious, lyrical forms where the prophet
signs and /or rhymes the word of the Lord. This method of
prophetic delivery is particularly suited to the critically wounded
or defeated in spirit. The soothing sound of the word of the Lord
musically declared has the twofold effect of healing and
encouragement at the same time. People who have been crushed
in spirit due to repeated setbacks or rejection respond well to a
prophetic song.

Prophetic Task
The prophet’s duties and labors to God as carried out. These may
be errands to give the word of the Lord to someone that may only
involve the prophet and the subject. Another example may be to
go and anoint someone to office or to go and pray for someone
else to be healed. Prophetic warfare, prophetic intercession, even
temporary or interim prophetic watch care may all qualify as
prophetic tasks. Even speaking engagements that promise little
more than obedience to the Lord incidental and often short-term.
Samuel’s anointing Saul and David is a biblical example of a
high prophetic task. Nathan and Gad’s ministry to David when
he sinned with Bathsheba and the counting of the Israelites are
others. Amos, Jonah, and other prophets’ dispatch to the rulers of
the lands are more prophetic tasks.

43
PROPHETIC BASICS

Prophetic Teaching
Teaching that is delivered by a prophet and focuses on what God
has done, which is normally undetected by His followers. It
expounds on what the Lord is doing that is hidden from those to
whom it pertains, and what He will do in a future generation. The
teaching is instructive and contains strong revelatory and
admonitory overtones.

Prophetic Teaching sees its greatest impact in prophetic settings

where other prophets or prophetic vessels are present. It is also
extraordinarily efficacious among up and coming prophets.
Instruction in righteousness, insight on nature, character, and
manifestations of Creator God, and how the Lord works subtly
through his protocratic agents of creation are also emphasized.

Prophetic teaching easily facilitates an understanding of the

immaterial side of creation as it manifests itself in our world.
Besides that, prophetic teaching grasps spontaneously from the
spirit world how God did and does what He does. It answers
questions that are often obscured by traditional theology and
religious thinkers. Insight, practicality, and guidance usually
characterize its type of meaty wisdom. Anatomizing the
prophetic is what is does best. Establishing guidelines for trying
prophecy and testing those who say they are prophets is another
feature of such teaching. With the anatomizing, prophetic
teaching enables a finite understanding of the predictive and
elementary modes of prophetics.

Prophetic Training
The sum of activities and events that go into making a prophet
ready to undertake the official functions and duties of his or her
mantle. These often include trials, tribulations, austere life object
lessons, and consistent rejection and alienation. The prophet’s
call is such that much of what he or she says will cause people to

44
PROPHETIC BASICS

react negatively. The negative reactions can manifest themselves

as rejection, abandonment, resistance and abuse. Prophets can
find themselves victims of harsh retaliatory measures up to and
including lost opportunities that negatively affect their income.

Isolation from peers and colleagues who are convinced by

slander and tales of imagined or perceived injurious prophecies
can also occur. People offended by the word of the Lord from
the prophet’s mouth attempt to shield themselves from the word’s
fulfillment by amassing a force of avengers to condemn the
prophet and vindicate themselves. During their years of
prophetic preparation, prophets experience the real events and
await them when they embark upon the officiating of their call.
By the time the prophet is released for duty, he or she has a well-
rounded understanding of what awaits him or her in God’s
service. Completion of the training program can take years.
Rarely is it accomplished in under ten years through the normal
course of life.

A senior prophet or a prophetic institution best accomplishes

Prophetic Training. Prophetic training is a requisite according to
Scripture. It involves getting a team of prophets equipped to be
used by the Lord in His service. The idea of ongoing training
would assure the Lord had a well-trained force of prophetic
voices and watchmen to draw on, as He needed. These were
situated throughout the country. In ancient days, the prophetic
was an official institution of all communities. Prophets were not
casual voices screaming in the wilderness. Rather they were
competent professionals whose job it was to bring the relevant,
consultative, and spontaneous word of the Lord to His people.
This was true for all peoples and deities in all lands. Prophetic
training is indicated in Isaiah 8:16, I Sam 10:5, 2Kings 6:1.
Prophetic training groups are known in the Bible as a company of

prophets or sons of the prophets. According to I Kings, sons of

the prophet were quite common under Elisha’s ministry.

They grew and eventually came to a place where they needed a

structure within which to live and learn. In the Bible, prophets
were rarely lone agents wandering from place to place hoping to
find an outlet for their ministries. The customary practice was to
attach oneself to a senior prophet or mentor, be trained, and
found credible, traveling with that mentor until dispatched by the
Lord to one’s own prophetic territory.

Prophetic Visitation
The experience of encountering one or more of God’s
supernatural creatures for the express purposes of being brought
into the visions of God as seen profusely in Ezekiel and the book
of Revelation. Prophetic visitations are intended to expose the
prophetic messenger to the spiritual world from which his or her
communications come and to empower them by their sources for
the delivery of that word boldly and accurately. Prophetic
visitations are a high order of prophecy delivery and are generally
the fruit of a resolute and relentless prayer life.

Prophetic Warfare
A term used to describe the supernatural engagement of the
prophet and the dark forces of creation in battle. Prophetic
warfare is conducted on behalf of the Creator God. Elijah’s
conflict with the prophets of Baal and Asherah, Moses’ battle
with the pharaohic gods of ancient Egypt, Elisha’s face-off the
army of the king of Syria. Paul’s mention of Moses’ clash with
Jeannes and Jambres mentioned in the New Testament
(Timothy), and Paul’s continual battles with Hymaneaus and
Alexander, along with Philetus, are all examples of prophetic
warfare.

Deborah, the woman who judged Israel and brought the country
through a victorious war, according to Judges 5, won her battle as
a prophet going to war. The plenipotentiary prophetess ascribed
her success to the collaborative encounters she had with Yahweh
and His deployment of military angels who assisted her and
Barak in their confrontation with the enemies of Israel. A poetic
psalm is uttered by her after her victory, which her recollection of
the seen and unseen events of the battle show she was acutely
aware of the spiritual hosts God sent to help her win. She
referred to hem as the stars from heaven that fought with her.

Seer
A) One who sees into the spirit realm and prophesies what is
seen. Samuel, the first judge of ancient Israel, was called a seer
early in his ministry. Later, the standard term for a prophet, nabi,
was used to separate its official functions from those of the
classic seer (hozeh/chozeh) prophet’s characteristics.
B) In the Bible Gad, Iddo, and Asaph were seers.
C) A seers gestures can mimic other spiritual activities that
somewhat mirror the official prophet.
D. Seer manifestations may also be observed in strong
intercessors. Christians who pray in the spirit diligently smoothly
escalate with the ascent of their prayers. After awhile, constant
practice produces the discipline to cause the appearance of
citizens, objects, or events of the supernatural in our realm.

Often seer manifestations exhibited by fervent intercessors have

the effect of showing themselves as prophetic. This classic
mistake has led many to believe peculiarly sensitive prayer
warriors to be prophets when they are not. One can know the
difference between the two by the absence or minimal
appearance of other prophetic distinctive's that in the official
prophet.

Likewise Psalmist, too, can be mistaken for the official prophet.

This is because of their exalted praise and worship activities
enable them to soar so high in the spirit realm that they easily see

and sometimes retrieve spiritual information normally outside the

scope of the typical minstrel’s access.

Seer-Manifestation
A term to express the appearance of normally invisible and
imperceptible activity of God’s spiritual creation. Visions,
observance of supernatural and futuristic scenes, and various
apparitions are examples of these. Seer manifestations always
emphasize the visual over the audible.

Spiritual Bankruptcy
This phrase, significant to prophetic understanding, explains the
barrenness, delayed or unanswered prayer and constant lack
experienced by a person. Often when a person gets born again,
they enter the kingdom of God with little or no spiritual economy
to their account. During the early years, usually the third year
(Luke 13:7-9, Deuteronomy 14:28 and 26:12), they build up fruit
and value in the spirit realm if they are obedient to the principles
of God. The economy comes from service, sacrifice and tithing,
giving and suffering. These al combined create a sphere of
economic sustenance and ultimately substance in a person’s life.
When withdrawals are made or other spiritual drains are placed

upon these kingdom reserves from disobedience, wavering faith,

unrighteousness, and sin the economy starts to shrink. If
unattended these dry up and eventually created a spiritual
bankruptcy.

Spiritual Dream
A sleep dream that unfolds the activities of the invisible realm
using as its communications the normal language of the dreamer
in the sleep. The spiritual dream employs the symbolism of
creation applied by Creator God to His world. Prophecies and
prophetic visions are obtained this way. Spiritual dreams often
need interpretation for the dreamer to understand, act on, and

48
PROPHETIC BASICS

correctly apply their truth in daily affairs. Spiritual dreams

maybe had by anyone. One does not need to be a prophet or
prophetic to receive one as they are communiqué’s of the
invisible world to those of earth. Jude 8 talks of the negative sort
of spiritual dream where impious behavior and lewd conduct may
be the objective. Nonetheless, the meaning of the word for
dream there implies the imaged were divinely (spiritually)
inspired. However, according to Acts 2:17, there are Holy Spirit
inspired dreams that serve God’s purposes. Spiritual dreams may
also be brought on by God’s dream angels. Nebuchadnezzar’s
dream in Daniel is an example of this. (Judges 7:13, Numbers
12:6). Seers and potent intercessors are likely to have frequent
and extensive spiritual dreams particularly after they have
frequent and extensive spiritual dreams particularly after they
have engaged in intense intercession. This is because the effect of
their spiritual visitation in the high places succeeded in opening
them up to the world of the spirit and the things of the spirit
world to them.

The spiritual dream may also emerge as a prophetic dream,

though not necessarily as seen with Balaam’s dreams where the
Lord responded to his inquiry on behalf of Balak who engaged
him to attack Israel. Balaam’s first dream concerning the matter
was spiritual, since it created a meeting where the Lord talked to
the prophet as a Superior to an employee. (Numbers 22:8-13)
Another example is the dreams Pilate’s wife had concerning her
husband’s role In the trial and Crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
Matthew 27:19 say’s that she suffered many things in a dream
that day (a spiritual dream) because of the intense spiritual
activity surrounding the Lord’s crucifixion. While she did not get
a prophecy, she got a warning. Matthew 1:19-25 is another
illustration.

PROPHETIC BASICS

In the spiritual dream the Lord releases something embedded in

the dreamer’s spirit that strong intercession incubated and
propelled into the soul realm of the dreamer. In this instance, the
dream responds to intercessory inquiry. These are revelatory in
that they answer concerns the dreamer over a proposed action, or
they allay the dreamer’s fear over something the Lord wants
done. What makes this type of dream more spiritual than
prophetic is the impetus for the dream. It is not necessarily a
predictive force that triggers it but rather the initiative of God in
response to the dreamer’s emotional concerns over the revealed
or suspected will of the Lord. Though spiritually motivated, it is
nonetheless not a beforehand declaration, but a simple exposure
of the dreamer to the Lord’s invisible world’s and agents.
Spiritual dreams may also be instigated at a critical time in the
dreamer’s destiny path.

The natural dream has none of these influences involved and

appear only as a result of something going on in the dreamer’s
waking life, inner desires, suppressed will, or emotional
existence. Ecclesiastes 5:3, 7 states that these are the products of
a busy life and overactive imagination. Furthermore, the human
spirit can engender a dream, but it is routinely expressed in terms
of worship, spiritual activity, or questions concerning them, or
work out the dreamer’s curiosity over spiritual and supernatural
matters. Generally, they are rarely self-motivated, addressed, or
inspired, but triggered by something the dreamer’s spiritual
posture intends. Genesis 28:12.
