2. Plot the dependence of the penetration depth of normally incident plane wave
into thick gold/silver/aluminium foils on the wavelength.
Let’s use the formula
λ
L= . (1)
4π Im(ε1/2 )
Formula (1) can be rewritten as
λ
L= , (2)
4πκ
where we took into account that Im(ε1/2 ) = κ – is the inverse penetration depth, or the extinction
coefficient. We can take experimental data for the extinction coefficient of various materials (Au[1],
Ag[2], Al[3]) from the refractiveindex.com database.
Next, we import the data into Wolfram Mathematica using the Import function, create the required
data arrays for the extinction coefficient. Then we will interpolate and plot the function L as a
function of the interpolated extinction coefficient for each material in the selected wavelength range.
The resulting plot of the dependence of the penetration depth on the wavelength is presented below.

Figure 1: Penetration depth vs wavelength for different materials

3. Plot the dispersion of SPP propagating along Au/air, Au/silica, Ag/air, Ag/silica
interface in the axes k vs ω neglecting the losses.
Using the lossless Drude model
Ω2p
ε(ω) = ε∞ − . (3)
ω2
For plasma frequency we have:
9 −1
Au: Ωp = s , (4)
~
9
Ag: Ωp = s−1 . (5)
~
Dispersion relation for TM-polarized SPP we can write as
r
ω ε1 ε2
kz = (6)
c ε1 + ε2

6
Assuming that nSilica ≈ 1.45 in the optical range, and using Wolfram Mathematica, we can get a
graph of the following dependencies.

Figure 2: SPP dispersion (wavenumber vs frequency) for different interfaces
