Global Water Partnership-Caribbean (GWP-C) will commemorate World Water Day (WWD) 2011 through
the following activities:
1. Global Water Partnership-Caribbean (GWP-C) along with some of its partners will be involved in
various activities in St. Lucia Water Week which takes place from March 20th-25th, 2011. The
regional event commemorates World Water Day 2011 and seeks to raise public awareness on the
value of water and waste water in our lives and development at all levels.
GWP-C will host two (2) events within the St. Lucia Water Week:
A seminar on ‘An IWRM Perspective of the Impact of Hurricane Tomas on the Caribbean’ -
GWP-C in collaboration with Water Engineering and Pipeline Company Limited WEPCO of
St. Lucia will co-host a half-day seminar focusing on the impact of Hurricane Tomas on the
Caribbean, and specifically on the water-related impacts across sectors. The seminar is
targeted at local and regional experts in the areas of IWRM; disaster management; climate
change; environmental management; meteorology; and engineering to discuss the policy,
legislative and institutional requirements for Disaster Risk Reduction from an IWRM
perspective.
2. GWP-C’s video production “Water: Is there enough for tomorrow?” is will air on national television
stations in Trinidad and Tobago and St. Vincent and the Grenadines during the week of WWD. The
video looks at the value of water conservation in the Caribbean region and the principles of
Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM).
3. GWP-C will be part of a national exhibition in Trinidad to celebrate WWD on March 22nd, 2011 and
World Meteorological Day on March 23rd, 2011. The exhibition is being hosted by GWP-C’s partner
the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) of Trinidad and Tobago in collaboration with the
Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service. Apart from GWP-C, various national IWRM
stakeholders will participate in the exhibition.
4. GWP-C will submit an article on the topic of water security to the print media both locally and
regionally to be published during the week of WWD.

WORLD WATER DAY 2011 ACTIVITIES IN TRINIDAD
1. In addition to hosting a two-day exhibition commemorating WWD and World Meteorological Day
on March 22nd-23rd, 2010, GWP-C’s partner the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) of Trinidad
and Tobago will launch a national Secondary School Quiz Competition on March 21st, 2011. The
theme of the national quiz is ‘In the Know with H2O’ and 116 secondary schools from Trinidad and
Tobago will be a part of it. The quiz is broken down into the following five (5) categories:
- Watershed Management
- Production and Distribution of Water
- Water Conservation
- Water Pollution
- Dry Season Planning
In observance of WWD 2011, GWP-C’s partner the National Water and Sewerage Authority
(NAWASA) will host a water conservation march which will culminate with a grand cultural show at
the Grenada National Stadium. The march is targeted at national primary and secondary school
students and each participating school will present an item relating to water along with NAWASA’s
band at the cultural show. GWP-C’s partners the Ministry of Agriculture and the Grenada Chapter
of the Caribbean Water and Wastewater Association (CWWA) are also involved in the event.
Another activity that will be undertaken by the National Water and Sewerage Authority (NAWASA)
in commemorating WWD is a one day water reconnection campaign. NAWASA will allow domestic
customers who have been disconnected to have their water supply reconnected free of charge
under specific terms and conditions.
GWP-C’s partner, the Caribbean Youth Environment Network (CYEN) will celebrate WWD 2011
with an exhibition at the Central Administrative Complex in Tortola, British Virgin Islands (BVI). The
exhibition which will be put on by the BVI Chapter of the CYEN will be a week long event from
March 21st-25th, 2011. This exhibit will focus mainly on the issue of water conservation particularly in the
British Virgin Islands and the greater Caribbean and aims to promote sustainable water usage to
ensure continued access to safe potable water in urban and rural areas.
GWP-C’s partner the Caribbean Water and Wastewater Association (CWWA) through its members in St.
Lucia in collaboration with the Caribbean Environmental Health Institute (CEHI) and the Global Environment

Facility - Integrating Watershed and Coastal Area Management (GEF-IWCAM) Project will host the 2nd
edition of St. Lucia Water Week to commemorate WWD 2011. The theme of the Water Week is ‘Alternative
Sources for a Sustainable, Safe and Secure Water Supply for All.’
The regional event which takes place from March 20th-25th, 2011 will feature various activities all aimed at
raising greater awareness on the value of water and wastewater. Some of these activities include a walk for
water; water forums; workshops and presentations on IWRM and a host of related topics. GWP-C’s partner
in St. Lucia the Water Engineering and Pipeline Company Limited is the presenting sponsor of the event.
The Ministry of Water and Housing and the Meteorological Service of Jamaica in collaboration with
GWP-C’s partners in Jamaica, the Water Resources Authority (WRA), the National Water Commission
(NWC), the National Irrigation Commission (NIC) and the Rural Water Supply Limited (RWSL) will host a
series of activities in celebration of WWD on March 22nd, 2011 with specific focus on this year’s WWD
theme ‘Water for Cities: Meeting the Urban Challenge.’

• Signing of the MOU with UNESCO/IHP to officially launch the Project WET Water and
Education for Teachers Programme – WET Jamaica 2011-2013.
3. • Exhibitions by the NWC, WRA, Rural Water Supply Limited and the National Irrigation
Commission.
• NWC Customer Care Centre - Come and query your bills and development applications.
4. • Outside radio broadcasts.
GWP-C’s partner, the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) in conjunction with the Ministry of Health, the
World Wide Fund-Guianas, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Pan American Health
Organisation (PAHO), EPA and DIGICEL will host a 3 mile ‘Walk for Water’ open to the general public on
March 19th, 2011 in observance of WWD. The idea behind the walk is to replicate the struggles of the
people of Sub-Saharan Africa, who are required to walk for 3 miles for water.
The Prime Minister of Guyana and the Ministers of Housing and Water and Health are expected to
participate in the ‘Walk for Water.’ The event aims to create awareness about the need for sustainable

water management in the rise of rapid urban population growth, industrialisation, climate change and
natural disasters that affect urban water systems.
GWP-C’s partner, the St. Kitts Water Services Department (WSD) in collaboration with the Global
Environment Facility - Integrating Watershed and Coastal Area Management (GEF-IWCAM) Project will host
a series of activities from March 20th-26th, 2011 in observance of WWD.
