62nd Republic Day of India
The Republic Day was celebrated by: a flag raising
ceremony open to the public on the morning of the 26th
January and followed by a reception for special guests on
the evening of 27th at the India House - both at the
residence of the Indian High Commissioner in Accra.
Republic Day, celebrated on January 26th every year, is
one of India’s most important national events. It was on
January 26th, 1950 that the constitution of India came
into force and India became a truly Sovereign, Democratic
and Republic state.
The India High Commissioner, Mrs. Ruchi Ghanashyam,
hoisted the Indian national flag to mark the first occasion
which was well attended, and read out the speech of the
president of India Mrs. Pratibha Patil.
Some key excerpts are:
As a nation, India’s aim is to grow and create a just society
a goal of poverty eradication and of inclusive growth that
embraces the disadvantage and marginalized sections,
society can be achieved when our actions are guided by a
social conscience and are not devoid of sensitivity.
The parliament of the country is the repository of the
sovereign will of the people, and its successful functioning
is a joint responsibility of both the government and the
opposition.
The evening reception on 27th was very well attended by
the political, diplomatic and business leaders of Ghana,
India and other friendly nations. Speeches were made by
Mrs. Ghanshyam and the Chief Guest of the evening,
Hon’ble Lt. General J.H. Smith, Minister for Defence
(representing the Government of Ghana).
The key statements were:
India-Ghana relations have been enriched by similarities in
our world view and have been strengthened in recent
years through enhanced South-South cooperation
between our two countries. The India-Ghana Kofi Annan
Centre for Excellence in ICT and the Flag Staff House are
examples of this cooperation.
Currently seven projects are being financed through

The bilateral relations between the two countries have
been strengthened through frequent interactions:

In March 2010, H.E. the Vice President of Ghana led a
high-level delegation to India to participate in the 6th
CII-EXIM Bank Conclave on India-Africa Project
Partnership in New Delhi as a partner country.

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in
partnership with the Association of Ghana Industry
(AGI) held its 12th Regional Conclave in Accra in June
2010 which was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Minister of
Trade & Industry.

The Minister of Commerce & Industry of India visited
Ghana along with a high level delegation of CEOs in
September 2010 for the India-Ghana CEOs Round Table
in Accra.

The Joint Trade Commission, dormant for some time,
was held in Delhi in January 2011 and was led by
Hon’ble Minister of Trade & Industry.
Several Indian industry majors are establishing their
presence in Ghana. The new arrivals are:

Bharti Airtel (it entered the Ghanaian market after its
acquisition of ZAIN Africa).

M/s Tech Mahindra, a major IT firm.

Delhi Public School, a reputed educational institution of
India, has set up a franchise resident school in Tema in
2010, open to Ghanaian and other students.
Ghana and India have signed a Memorandum of
Understanding (MOU) to set up a Joint Venture Fertilizer
Project in Ghana at an estimated cost of US$1.3 billion,
which on completion would manufacture over 1.15 million
tons of fertilizer.
Capacity building has been a hallmark of India-Ghana
cooperation:
• Over 1200 Ghanaian professionals and students have
been trained under the ITEC and SCAAP programmes
over the years.

• Over 100 Ghanaian professionals went to India under
the ITEC scheme in 2010.
• Other students and professionals availed of
scholarships offered by the Indian Council of Cultural
Relations (ICCR), Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT)
and programmes run as per the outcome of the India
Africa Forum Summit 2008.The Pan African e-Network
project inaugurated in Ghana on 26 February, 2009 is
complementing this effort.
• Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology
(KNUST) has started degree courses with some of the
best Universities and Institutions in India.

Hon. Lt. General J.H. Smith, Minister for Defence,
ffelicitated the Government and people of India on this
occasion on behalf of the President H.E. John Evans Atta
Mills and the people of Ghana. He paid tribute to the First
Leaders of the two countries, namely President Dr.
Kwame Nkrumah and Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru,
who were indeed the architects of Ghana-India relations.
His key message was:
“We are all witnesses to the fact that the Republic of India
has made tremendous strides in recent decades to become
one of the fastest growing economies in the world today.
We remain confident that all levels of bilateral
cooperation continues to expand, we would also be able to
emulate India's pragmatic policies and achievement in
making development meaningful for the ordinary citizens.
We express appreciation to India for the support and
cooperation it has extended to Ghana not only at the
official level, but also through private sector partnerships
and the philanthropy of Indian citizens resident in Ghana.
We look forward to expanding the bonds of cooperation

between our two countries, as we traverse the second
decade of the 21st century".
The evening melted into the next morning on the green
lawns as the Police Band played soul-stirring wonderful
melodies in the background. Another day of celebrating
the tryst between two nations - with each other, and their
shared destinies.

1. Blood Test to predict a HEAR ATTACK: A simple blood test
could help predict heart attack following the discovery of a
protein fragment that could be associated with the problem.
Research by cardiologists at the University of Connecticut Health
Center, published in the Jan. 11 issue of the Journal of the
American College of Cardiology. “We’ve discovered a new
biomarker for heart attack, and showed that apoptosis, or a
particular kind of cell death, is a cause of heart muscle damage.”
Dr. Liang says. “The ability to see a heart attack coming with a
simple blood test and to develop new therapies to block
apoptosis would enable us to get a head start on treatment and
preserve crucial heart muscle and cardiac function.”

2. Liver damage due to Paracetamol : Paracetamol (called
Acetaminophen in USA) is perhaps one of the most widely
prescribed drugs worldwide. Its use for pain and fever finds wide
application throughout life. Over the counter formulations
typically contain either 325 mg (regular strength) or 500 mg
(extra strength) of Paracetomol. Paracetomol is used in many
prescription products in combination with other drugs. The three
commonest causes for Paracetomol induced liver injury are:
• Taking the drug in doses exceeding the recommended limits
of 4000mg (or 4 gm) in a 24 hour period. This may cay cause
severe liver damage that ends in the need for liver transplant
or otherwise death.
• Taking more than one Paracetomol -containing product at
the same time.
• Drinking alcohol while taking the drug.
Stop your medicine and seek medical help immediately if you-
• experience allergic reactions such as swelling of the face,
mouth, and throat; difficulty breathing; itching; or rash.
• think you have taken more Paracetomol than directed.

Upcoming Events
1. African Cricket Premier League Qualifiers: ICC
South Africa and Pepsi are organizing this T20
cricket tournament in Ghana from the 24th of Feb. to the
3rd of March. National teams of eight countries -
Cameroon, Mali, Gambia, Lesotho, Morocco, Seychelles, St.
Helena and Rwanda will be competing. ICC South Africa
found conditions and facilities in Ghana and Ghana Cricket
Association up to the mark for to host such an event, a
feather in our cap and credit all who were involved.
Ghana Cricket Association is seeking the sponsorship
support from organisations, cricket loving individuals and
companies who can help in making this event a success.
The success of this tournament will encourage ICC South
Africa to bring more of such events to Ghana, showcasing
Ghana to the outside world through another window.
