AMMUNITION for RIFLE ,REVOLVER and SHOTGUN WESTERN CARTRIDGE COMPANY BAST ALTON, ILLINOIS Wasees Casramce Coseany, East Arrow, Itton With Roosevelt in auert of OVIS POLI “AA 1picz umber of, pezeless specimens brought back to the Field Museum by the Simpson-Roosevelt Field Museum Expedir tion were secured with Westean 475 HH cartridges with Lubaloy bullets, Tn comment ing upon the performance of this ammunition, Colonel Theodore Roosevelt writesas follows: “During the trip the rifle I used most vias my aq Hofinan with, Westen ammunition. Por small gate ain ullet answered the purpesesexcellently, and larger animals I used a yoo-gtain bullet. ‘These cartridges left che barcel of the rifle in excellent shape, and I never hed a mistre, Among the animals which fell to thie tile were: “ovis peli hog deer chetal ex wild bour leopard Sihetian ree tger pagal burhel ‘Asiatic wapiti black buck sembuc Himalayan black — Tsketan swomp der bear satelope” PEEP bE bt bidder a gaara Western Ammunition Made for Sportsmen by Sportsmen oe wie purpose of this booklet is to give sportsmen, in concise form, a better understanding of the more important and interesting facts about the use and manufac’ ture of ammunition, so chat every man who, uses a tifle, revolver or shotgun may obtain better results and greater pleasure from the use of his firearm, The Western Cartridge Company was organized over a quarter of a century ago and has in tHat time built up one of the most come plete ammunition factories in the world. So thoroughly complete is its equipment that, with the exception of raw materials, prac’ tically every element entering into the fn- ished shell or cartridge is manufactured in its own mills and factories. Brass of highest quality and correct temper; lead and copper alloys especially developed for bullets, shot, and bullet jackets; powder for special pur- poses; primers, wads and cases—all are pro- = duced with the one idea cf making better ammunition. All components needed for Wostenn products are manufactured by the best and most modern processes, under the supervision of men who ate not only highly trained scien- tists and skillful craftsmen, but experienced sportsmen as well, ‘These men know what you expect and should get from the ammuni- tion that you buy. They can appreciate the keen disappointment of a misfire at a critical moment and they know the annoyance of cleaning a rifle that has become metal fouled or leaded. Whether the weapon is rifle, shotgun or revolver, they have "been there™ and all the little troubles which occasionally mar the shooter's sport are problems with which they are intimately acquainted. But even more important are the many improvements that have grown out of friendly criticisms and suggestions from hundreds of sportsmen ia almost every part of the world, This cordial contact gives to Westen tech: nical experts a practical background for their research work and has aided them in perfect ing some of Wrsrza3y's most important refine- ments and new developments. Among these are the famous Field stecl-locked shell for allround shooting, Super-X, the long-range load and the popular Xpert shell for trap and field shooting. In the field of metalliccartridges, Westsnn’s: exclusive features are equally well known and shooters everywhere have welcomed the Lubeloy non-fouling bullet, open-point ex Ey fanding and boas tal alles the cose igh-velocity cartridge and the Marksman, cap long rifle cartridge. All of these ex: clusive developments in Wesrerw emmuni- tion are described in this booklet. Itis this first-hand knowledge —plus com- plete modern equipment for making and test- ing everything that goes into a shell or cartridge—that has built up the unusual accuracy and reliability of Wesrex ammuni- tion, Because of these qualities in both shot shells and metallic cartridges, Wesraa am- munition has become the choice of the world’s best shots, Many leading events, including the World's Individual and Team Champion- shipsat Milan, Italy; the Olympic Champion- shipsat Antwerp and Pacis: the Grand Amer ican Handicaps in 1923, 1924, 1935 and 1936 and many other national, zone and state matches have been won with Wesrern shells or cartridges, Super-X The Long-Range Load Eee sportsmen have called Super-X. the greatest development in shotgun ammunition since the invention of smokeless powder, Through the use of a new-type progressive burning powder which was de- veloped especially for this purpose, Super-X adds 15 to 20 yards to the shotgun’s effective range, at the same time giving higher velocity, more concentrated chot column and better pattems at all ranges. As the entire shot charge of Super-X leaves the gun in a compact group, the stringing or spread of the load is about one-half that of any other type of load thus far tested by our technical department. ‘This is an added advantage which does not appear on the pattern board, but which accounts for many of the seemingly impossible long-range kills, and is really the secret of Super-X. These qualities make the load ideal forall dificult long-range shooting. It stands for supreme quality in shotgun ammunition Be 10-Gauge Super-X ro~gauge Super X is loaded in the standard ayginch Field Steellocked shell with 1g ounces of special chilled shot, sizes BB, 2, 3, 4,5 and 6. It is offered in all of the ne popular lighter loads, in drop and chilled shot, and has been found very effective for all Kinds of shooting except the difficult long-range shots that call for Super-X. The Xpert shell was made possible through the development in the Western laboratories of the new smokeless powder with which it is loaded. This special powder represents a new type, and is manufactured exclusively for Xpert under close Wesrexx supervision by an improved process upon which patents are now pending. Xpert powder, besides being absolutely smokeless and unusually uniform, gives splen- did velocity without objectionable recoil, Bat it is distinctive in that its breech pres: sure is considerably lower than similar loads in the older types of powder. This low initial pressure bas made it possible to put up Xpert in an economically constructed low brass waterproof shell. ‘The saving result- ing from this type of construction accounts for Xpert’s low price ‘Though priced low, the Xpert shell shows throughout the same attention to detail which has made other Wastean_ products famous. Head, primer, wadding, shot, tube, crimp and all other elements are of standard oe Western quality and have been designed and made according to the best knowledge of a resourceful and highly trained staft of technical experts, Each pert shell aust conform in every way to the high standards of quality and performance which are re- quired of all Waster products. The Xpert shell makes 2 splendid trap ot field load and because of its exclusive powder, it remains without competition. Its popu- latity has already reached buge proportions, showing again, a3 with Super-X, that Amer jean sportsmen are quick to recognize Wzst- pin’ efforts to give them better ammunition. Xpert specrfcations and list prices in 12, 16 and 20-gauge are given on pages 16 and 17. Lubaloy is a metal alloy which was invented and patented by the Western Cartridge Company. Because of its toughness, it effectually prevents the lumpy deposits of metal which cling to the bore of the rifle when bullets with ordinary cupro- nickel jackets are used. Such deposits, usually found near the muzzle of the gun, are known as metal fouling and seriously impair the life and accuracy of the rifle. So successfully has Lubaloy com- bated this condition, that similar metals have been adopted for military rifle cartridges by our own and several foreign governments. The Lubaloy jacket is nearly twice as thick as the usual copper or cupronickel jacket and resists deformity like tough steel.” This 0b makes Lubaloy the ideal metal for open-point expanding bullets. Lubaloy jacketed bullets can be had only in Western cartridges. They are available inall loads using jacketed bullets and are sold at the same price as the old-type cartridges. No hide is too thick and no muscle too tough for this bullet to penetrate, But, while penetrating any intervening bone or muscle, the bullet does not usually pass on through the body, the dimension of the open-point cavity having been worked out to cause expansion and explosion to take place at just the right instant. ‘This type is supplied in all bullets which have suficient muzzle velocity to give the necessary explosive effect. It is one of the most popular big-game bullets in the world. Ordnance Department tests in 1931, So remarkable wete the results obtained with these bullets that the boat tail form has been adopted as standard by the United States and several other gov- ernments for military purposes. = Soft-Point Bullets Tir ar tv general types of soft-point bullets, the long exposed point wherein approximately one-fourth of an inch or more lead is exposed and the short exposed point wherein about one-eighth of an inch or less. of lead is exposed. “The hetter type depends largely on the velocity. A low-velocity bul- let like the regular .30-30 Winchester should have the long exposed type of point, A high velocity bullet should have the short exposed type as in the 6.5 MannlicherSchoenauer 160 gr. and the .20-06 220 gr. The proper Tength soft point for each load has been cate- fully worked out from a practical standpoint. Full Metal-Jacket Bullets FY jacketed bullets, commonly called fall metal patch, are supplied primarily for target shooting. All WesrrRw bullets of this type are now made with the famous Lubaloy non fouling jacket, which contributes markedly to greater accuracy. Lead Bullets ume, with our policy of making nothing but “better bullets,” all Wesrzen lead bullets are made from alloys of exactly the proper temper by swaging. Swaging is a cold forging process which insures bullets of uniform shape, weightand hardness. All Wesrerw lead bullets are formed with lubricating grooves which hold just the proper amount of lubricant. ‘This lubrica- tion is scientifically designed to give accuracy and longer life to your rile and should never be wiped of. =Ts Rim Fire Cartridges This isa complete list of all WestzRN Rim Fire Cartridges.
