Problem Statement Administration

We enjoy the safest Air Traffic System in the World

However:
 It is approaching saturation
 It has limits in responding to today’s changing needs
 It is based on 1950’s Technology

Challenge:
 Transform the Air Traffic System to make it scalable
and flexible by injecting 21st Century Technology
WITHOUT disrupting the service quality and level of
safety enjoyed today

NextGen is the Answer Federal Aviation
Administration

The Next Generation Air Transportation system, or NextGen, is a

complete transformation of the National Airspace System
• Enhanced Safety
• Increased Capacity and Efficiency
• Reduced Aviation’s Environmental Impact
It is the biggest change in the history of aviation and it will touch
every element of the aviation community

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has established NextGen

as a priority, describing the transformation of the national
airspace system as “important for the flying public.”

How Will NextGen Benefit Airports
Federal Aviation
• Increased Capacity Administration
– Precision-based navigation (RNAV and RNP)

• Improved Environmental Performance

– Optimal Profile Descent

• Increased Safety - Greater situational awareness

– Airport Surface Detection Equipment, Model X (ASDE-X)
– Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B)

Going Green - Optimal Profile Descent Arrivals
Federal Aviation
Administration
Also know as Continuous Descent Arrivals (CDA), these approaches
allow aircraft to descend with the shortest route at a minimum power
setting:

• Reduce noise impact on residential communities surrounding

airports
• Reduce fuel burn
• Decrease carbon emissions

• Recent demonstrations of oceanic tailored arrival procedures into

San Francisco, 1,000+ flights collectively:
• reduced CO2 emissions by 6.3 million lbs.
• reduced fuel use by 2 million lbs.

The demonstrations support the developing of procedures to

support wide range deployment of optimized arrival concepts.

Surface data sharing for ASDE-X infrastructure underway for 2010

• Leverage installed ASDE-X infrastructure

• Will provide surface traffic data sharing
• Stepping stone for more robust
collaborative decision support tools

Benefits
• Delay reduction
• Reduced fuel burn and environmental
footprint
• Improved situational awareness and
decision making Leveraging demos at JFK and MEM
• Collaborative planning at airport
