Funny thing is, Tom is an EMPLOYEE but instead he’s acting like a boss who’s spending money that’s not his. Dr. Tom Cardman Hired in late 2004 Job Description: Economic Development Director Annual Salary: $83,000 Expenses: Taxpayers furnish him a car, gas, cell phone. Lives in: Rockingham County Pays taxes to: Rockingham County Failures In the 5 years that Tom Cardman has been the Economic Development Director, Tom’s accomplishments are: Recommended that we pay $60,000 an acre for Douglas Atwood property (aka Emerald City) for a new County Complex. Turns out it’s in the Flood Plain and can’t be used. Great job. Disbanded a working community broadband initiative (SWBA) in order to start an Authority that he alone controls. This is just wasted tax $$$ for his own political ends, and is unlikely to provide broadband service for citizens any time soon. Meanwhile broadband is already spreading across the county without his help. Thanks Tom. Convinced the governor of Virginia to contribute more than $300,000 for the Premiere Technical data center that has never materialized. It’s just state money, right? Began the habit of transferring tax dollars to the EDA so they could be spent without citizen input. Tom, why are you moving to the shadows? Spearheaded Project Clover, duping our Board of Supervisors to pay $7.5 million for empty farmland. The Clover land was worth $12,000 an acre, but they paid $36,000 an acre. Only Tom can make sense out of this one. Convinced the Board to put in a new phone system at a cost of $200,000 that provides less service and is incompatible with the 911 system. This new contract went to Premiere Technical Corporation, which has yet to bring new jobs to Page County as promised. Yeah! And the most incompetent failure so far: inviting Fibrowatt to build a 300 ft. high waste incinerator on Project Clover. Not only is it a major pollution source that will destroy our valley’s vista and poison the citizens, it will also cost us millions of tax dollars to subsidize the necessary infrastructure. Download “Considering The Facts About Fibrowatt”. As of right now, your share of Page County’s debt is $2,400 per person, and that amount is likely to GROW as Cardman’s schemes expand. Tom Cardman is a county employee who has failed time again to help Page County prosper in ways the citizens want. Tom Cardman is incompetent and a shady dealer. Dump Cardman. Why? Because Tom Cardman doesnt even live here. He lives in Rockingham County near Harrisonburg. He is paid to commute here every day, bringing unwanted changes that he will not have to live with or pay for since he doesn’t pay taxes in Page County. Let’s remember: Tom Cardman is a county employee and works for the people. If we decide he is not listening to us and doing a poor job, then he should be dumped. Cardman is being paid $83,000 a year by us, the taxpayers. That’s a reasonable salary for an educated, qualified individual who understands the needs of our unique community. But the past five years is simply a list of failures that have put this county in debt. Tom Cardman doesn’t live in Page County, doesn’t pay taxes in Page County and doesn’t understand Page County. So why are we paying him? Dump him. We need four of the six members of the Board of Supervisors to vote for his dismissal. He is currently working on a contract as interim County Adminstrator but that can be terminated with minimal penalty. This will stop the permanent financial, social, and ecological harm he is committing with his renegade plans. Remember that the Board of Supervisors are individual citizens like us who were elected to represent us. We know that several of our Supervisors are already logical enough to understand that Tom Cardman is a serious problem. They just need a little push. Support the leaders who lead.
