The Neighborhoods
Jamaica Plain and Roxbury are both residential neighborhoods of Boston. This means that people tend to live in
these areas for decades at a time. As the city continues to grow, Egleston Square is a strategic location for a new
church presence. Roxbury and Jamaica plain span about six miles in the geographic center of the city, but there
is a clear demographic division in the makeup of the neighborhoods.

Jamaica Plain roxbury

Why Egleston Square?
A Bridge: Egleston Square is a borderland between two of Boston’s most
diverse neighborhoods. Both Roxbury and Jamaica Plain claim ownership of
the square, making Egleston a unique bridge between typically separate cul-
tures. Cultures collide in Egleston Square, and the Gospel working through
the church has the power to make this place a beautiful picture of God’s
kingdom on earth.

An Opportunity: Unlike many parts of Boston, Egleston Square is a de-

pressed area. There are empty storefronts and foreclosed homes in abundance,
crime is high, and for many, jobs are hard to find. Now is the time when a
gospel renewal movement could greatly impact an area of the city that the
church has often overlooked.

An International Mission: Egleston Square is a hub for immigrants from

around the world. Men and women from Latin America, Africa, and the
Middle East populate the neighborhood. A Church in Egleston will impact
the nations simply by loving her neighbors.
The Church
Gospel Driven At the center of our vision is the conviction that the Gos-
pel of Jesus Christ is the power of God for the salvation
of everyone who believes, and that every malady and grief
is addressed and substantially healed in this gospel. We
long to see transformation in the city by the outgrowth
of lives as they are renewed by the Holy Spirit. We are
convinced that only the good news of the love of God
expressed in the death and resurrection of Jesus is capable
of accomplishing such radical renewal in Boston.

Although many ministries will eventually flow out of the

church, our first priority will be the proclamation of the
good news of Jesus. We believe Christians are real sinners
Romans 1:16 For I with real problems, but the truth of the limitless grace of

the power of God for
salvation to everyone
who believes.
Christ calls us to love our neighbor, and in a city as diverse as Boston that
Multi-Ethnic means building friendships and sharing life with people from a variety of
races, cultures, ethnic groups, and socio-economic classes. We believe if the
church is carrying out its calling then it will reflect the make-up of the sur-
rounding neighborhood. In order to achieve diversity, The Egleston Square
Project will intentionally strive for diversity in the initial core group and lead-
ership of the church.

Of all the facts about Boston, this might be the most amazing: there is no Wal-mart
in Boston. Boston was founded in 1630, and although life has changed dramatically
Neighborhood since then, the provincial layout of the city still shapes daily life. People are more
likely to walk to a corner store than drive to a mega-retailer. We believe the most
Focused effective church in Boston will be the church that understands the dynamics of the
neighborhoods and becomes a part of the fabric of the community.

Seek the peace and prosperity of

the city to which I have carried
you. Pray to the LORD for it,
because if it prospers,
you too will prosper.
Jeremiah 29:7
The Movement
Mission:
The Gospel renewal of Boston
through the planting of new churches.

Boston is a bustling and diverse city with residents from a broad spectrum of so-
cio-economic classes and faith backgrounds. One church cannot possibly reach
everyone. To this end, The Egleston Square Project is committed to seeing a church
planting movement take root in Boston. From the outset the church will exist in re-
lationship with other churches around the city in order to assist in the establishment
and growth of new congregations. The church will be a training ground for new
church planters, and the church will give 10% of its budget towards church planting
through the Christ the King Boston church planting network.. With congregations
already started in Cambridge, Dorchester, Newton, and the South Shore, the net-
work is steadfastly committed to the goal of planting 20 churches by 2020..

Goal: 20 churches by 2020

The Hope for the City
The Egleston Square Project is part of a much larger mission to see the
kingdom come in Boston. As one of many congregations around the city,
it will be one piece in the vision for:

• A healthy and growing congregation for every neighborhood so that the

city and its people are changed in every dimension: spiritually, socially, and
culturally.

• A proliferation of worshipping and caring communities that

º Reflect the cultural, educational and economic diversity of the city
º Equip believers to practice the gospel in all areas of life
º Train men and women to proclaim the gospel in their unique context

• A network of congregations that share gospel values, kingdom commit-

ments and a common vision for the city.

“Should I not be concerned about that great city?” - Jonah 4:11

The Call
Melissa and Logan had their first experience with church plant-
ing when they visited a team in Thailand in 2007. They were
both amazed at the intentionality of the missionaries’ lives. The
members of the team never missed opportunities to engage the
people in their community, and they treated each new encoun-
ter as a chance to begin a lasting friendship. As they prayed
and reflected upon their visit, they felt the Lord leading them
to pursue similarly intentional lives back in Boston. Shortly
thereafter they moved to the Dorchester neighborhood where
Logan served as a church planting resident and assistant pastor.
Over the years, the Lord affirmed their calling through church
planting assessment with Mission to North America and Acts
29, and by burdening their hearts for the Egleston Square area.
Logan and Melissa are committed to planting a church where
people from all walks of life feel welcomed, and watching God
work as he calls sinners to himself and redeems their lives by the
Logan, Melissa, & Ruby Keck power of his grace..
The Response
In response to the Lord’s call, The Egleston Square Project will begin in the Fall
of 2011. Church planting is a long process, but by God’s grace we hope to see
this church become self-supporting and reproducing within five years.

2011-2012: Move to next neighborhood, begin forming relationships

and gathering a core group.

2012-2013: Hold first public worship service and begin training new
church planter

2013-2016: As church grows, begin planning for next site in another

area of Boston led by a new church planter.

Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.
Psalm 127:1
Prayer
Prayer is our greatest need in ministry. We are looking for people who will commit
to intercede regularly on our behalf for our marriage, family, church, and city. We
take prayer partnership very seriously because only God can extend his kingdom.
Our Needs
Those who support us in prayer will receive bi-montly e-mail updates as well as oc-
casional urgent requests for prayer.

Financial Commitment
The first two years will require the highest amount of outside giving in order to
sustain the church. This amount of outside giving decreases over 5 years until the
church is fully self-supporting.
