Real-World Results Make Specifying
In addition to extensive laboratory testing, Ever Green Cut ‘n Wrap insulation kits have been tested in real-world
environments. These include boiler rooms, mechanical rooms, and steam distribution centers. In each case, the existence
of exposed and uninsulated relief valves, flanges, valve stems, fittings, and steam traps were the root cause of excess heat
loss, CO2 emissions, and safety issues. Several facilities agreed to test, evaluate, and document Cut ’n Wrap insulation
covers for improved energy efficiency, reduced carbon emissions and lower heat loss in their respective steam distribution
and processing areas.

Once installed, estimated heat loss savings and payback were calculated using 3E Plus®2, a computer program developed
by NAIMA (North American Insulation Manufacturers Association), that incorporates ASTM C1129 — “Standard Practice
for Estimation of Heat Savings By Adding Thermal Insulation to Bare Valves and Flanges.” Additional measurements were
also made to gauge the reduction of ambient room temperature, as well as the surface temperature of the affected
components, both before and after the installations took place.

Test Site Results

University Campus - Steam Distribution Center

ISSUE: Worker safety and the reduction of overall heat loss in the steam distribution room

SITUATION: A university steam distribution center was undergoing a new installation of insulation to its piping and
equipment. Since the steam system was going to be operational before the completion of the thermal insulation, there
was a genuine concern for worker safety during that period. In addition to the ambient room temperature reaching
130ºF, the exposed valves and other uninsulated surfaces would be extremely hot due to the high operating
temperature (357ºF), and posed a threat to the insulation installation crew.

RESULTS: 12 Ever Green Cut ‘n Wrap insulation covers were installed on the valves in question. Although worker safety
was the primary objective, the added economic and environmental benefits of Cut ‘n Wrap covers proved to be a
winning combination. Post-installation analysis estimates the University will save an additional $12,900 per year in
energy costs and reduce CO2 emissions by 75 tons annually.

Cut ’n Wrap a Really Easy Decision
Medical Center - Mechanical Room

ISSUE: With concerns over increasing energy and operating costs, hospital officials requested an energy audit in an
effort to uncover waste within the building. While auditing the Boiler Room, 10 valves, ranging from 4” to 12”, and
one steam trap were found to be either completely uninsulated or not insulated properly. This was causing excessive
heat loss and high ambient room temperature, that was not only wasteful, but also posed a potential safety risk.

SOLUTION: Hospital officials agreed to install Cut ‘n Wrap insulation covers in an effort to reduce the mechanical
room’s ambient temperature, reduce energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions, as well.

RESULTS: It took less than 3 hours for a two person crew to insulate the areas with Cut ‘n Wrap. Total installation cost
was $2,675, with an estimated annual energy savings $3,900. The temperature in the room dropped 15 degrees after
the valves and steam trap were insulated making it a much safer work environment. For this particular installation, the
hospital will recoup its investment in 8 months.

Municipality Armory Building - Boiler Room

ISSUE: During the heating season, a municipality maintenance manager noted a significant amount of heat loss
occurring in the Armory building boiler room. He also noted the piping system’s “touch temperature” presented
potential safety risks with municipality’s maintenance crew. The operating temperature was 230°F.

SOLUTION: A total of 22 Cut ‘n Wrap insulated covers were installed onto a variety of different sized valves, valve
stems, flanges, and tees. The goal was to allow for a safer working environment and reduce energy operating costs.
Installation took less than four hours by two maintenance workers.

RESULTS: Two workers were able to size, cut and fit all 22 fittings in roughly 3 hours. Total installation cost was only
$1,250, with an estimated annual energy savings of $1,365 for a simple payback of 11 months. The longer payback is
reflective of the lower operating temperature.
