MEAL PLAN: 2-6 WEEKS AFTER SURGERY

2-4 WEEKS AFTER SURGERY:


Protein Supplements
UNJURY (GHP or www.unjury.com)-- 20 grams per scoop
ISOPURE (GNC) – 40 grams per 16 ounce bottle or 20 grams per scoop
GHP Products- typically 15 grams, but check food labels (NO
bars/meals until 4 weeks)
All protein supplements must be 100% Whey or Soy Protein Isolate-
(avoid concentrate and/or blends)
Non-fat dry milk powder—3 grams of protein per tablespoon

Meat Group
Cottage Cheese (1/4 cup = 7g protein): fat free or low-fat
Baby Food Meats—2nd Foods (check food label for protein)
Refried Beans (1/2 cup=7g protein)—low-fat/non-fat
Tofu: light, soft or silken (check food label for protein)

Milk Group
Milk (1 cup = 8g protein): NO 2% or whole milk
Yogurt (8 oz container = 8-11g protein): low-fat light yogurt
Pudding (1 cup = 8g protein): boxed sugar free/fat free pudding mix
Cream soups (1 cup = 7-8g protein): made with milk (NO 2% or whole)
Higher Protein Hot Cereals (1 packet/serving = 6-9g protein): Kashi Go
Lean Oatmeal,
Quaker Weight Control Oatmeal, Coco Wheats or Quaker Oatbran
Cooked Cereal
HINT: try making with low-fat milk to increase protein

1/2 cup low fat cottage cheese


1 small baked (or boiled) potato, peeled
1 green onion, finely chopped
1-2 Tablespoons low fat milk
Salt and Pepper to taste

Blend cottage cheese and milk until it’s a smooth consistency. Add
chopped green onions and keep refrigerated until potato is ready. Pour
mixture over potatoes.

1/2 large box of sugar-free, fat-free chocolate pudding mix


1 cup low fat cottage cheese
4 egg whites (egg whites should be used in recipes only--not to be
eaten individually)
6 or 8 packets of Splenda

Mix together in a blender. Bake at 350 for about 15 minutes.

1/4 cup marinara sauce
1/4 tsp oregano
1/4 tsp basil

Mix together. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes until warm.

4 WEEKS AFTER SURGERY:


Meat Group
Egg/Egg Whites/Egg Substitutes (1 serving=6-7g protein)
Cheeses- 2% or Fat Free (1 ounce=7g protein)
Chicken, fish/seafood, turkey, ham (1 ounce=7g protein)
*NO beef or pork—too dense; peanut butter or nuts—too much fat
Important Tips:
1. Canned or Deli meats are better tolerated since they’re
moister.
2. Try adding broths, gravies, spaghetti sauce, or low-fat cream
soups.
3. Try using spray butter, spices/herbs, low-fat mayo/miracle
whip, low-fat salad dressings, seafood sauce, enchilada sauce,
salsa, mustard, ketchup etc.
4. Finely dice and chew well.

EXAMPLE MEAL PLAN AT 4 WEEKS (3 MEALS + 2 SNACKS)

TRY ONE OF THE FOLLOWING RECIPES:

1 cup low fat cottage cheese


2 oz can diced green chilies
¼ cup egg substitutes
1 ounce grated low fat jack/cheddar cheese

Mix together the cottage cheese, chilies, and egg(s) in a bowl. Mix with
grated cheese and bake at 350F for about 15 minutes, or until the eggs
have set and top is golden.

¾ cup egg substitutes


1/4 cup cottage cheese
1 ounce low fat shredded cheese
1 roma tomatoes, diced
Green onions to taste
Mix all ingredients together in a bowl. Pour into a muffin pan—fill each
muffin ¾ full. Cook at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes, or until the
eggs have set and top is golden. Salt and pepper to taste

GENERAL GUIDELINES:
PROTEIN—you MUST consume 60 grams per day
minimum
Roux-en-Y
• 60-80 grams per day , don’t worry about calories
Lapband, Gastric Sleeve, and Duodenal Switch
• 60-80 grams per day; less than 900 calories per day

LIQUIDS (water, decaf coffee and teas, sugar-free drinks)


• Try to drink 64 oz diet/decaf fluids per day (you may not be
able to do this)
• NO carbonated drinks unless flat
• Stop drinking 15 minutes prior to 45 minutes after your
scheduled meals.

MEALS
• Eat protein first before any other foods!!!!
• Tolerance for certain foods is highly individual
• Eat several small meals throughout the day
• Chew food approximately 20-25 times before swallowing
• Allow 30-45 minutes to eat each small meal
• Avoid sweets and high-fat foods

Protein Shake Recipes


Tips for making protein shakes:
• Use 100% whey or soy protein isolate
• Use flavored extracts to improve flavor
• Use sugar free products such as: drink mixes/coffee
syrups/gelatin/pudding powder
• Freeze milk in ice cube trays to make milk cubes for blending
• Add yogurt to increase creaminess and add protein
• Use lactose free milk or light soy milk if you are lactose
intolerant

UNFLAVORED RECIPE SUGGESTIONS


Unflavored protein powder (Unjury) or nonfat dry milk powder can
be mixed w/the following:

VANILLA RECIPE SUGGESTIONS

Lemon Cheesecake
8 oz skim milk or water
1 scoop vanilla protein powder
1 T. cheesecake flavored sugar free/fat free pudding mix
1 T. lemon flavored sugar free/fat free pudding mix
Blend all ingredients in a blender.

Hot White Chocolate

8 oz skim milk
1 scoop vanilla protein powder
1 T. white chocolate sugar free/fat free pudding mix
Blend all ingredients in a blender. Heat in the microwave—not over 130
degrees

Frozen Banana Colada


4 oz milk
8 oz milk frozen into ice cubes
1 scoop vanilla protein powder
2 T. banana flavored sugar free/fat free pudding mix
¼ Tsp. Rum extract
Blend all ingredients in a blender.

Apple Pie A’la Mode


8 oz milk or water
1 scoop vanilla protein powder
½ package sugar free spiced apple cider
1 T. butterscotch flavored sugar free/fat free pudding mix
Blend all ingredients in a blender and heat to desired temp.—not over 130
degrees

Orange Smoothie
6 ounces Diet/Caffeine Free orange soda, well chilled
1 Tablespoon Vanilla sugar free/fat free pudding mix
1 scoop Vanilla protein powder
1. Blend all ingredients for at least 5 seconds.
2. Serve over ice, or for slush freeze 1 ½ - 2 hours or until semi-solid. Place
in blender and blend until slush consistency is formed.

Root Beer Treat


6 ounce Diet/Caffeine Free root beer, well chilled
½ cup Skim Milk
1/8 tsp. Root beer extract
1 scoop Vanilla protein powder
1. Pour diet root beer and root beer extract into blender.
2. Add contents of product and cloves into the blender. Blend at lowest
speed for 5 seconds.
3. Serve over ice, or for slush freeze 1 ½ - 2 hours or until semisolid. Place
in blender and blend until slush consistency is formed.

Pumpkin Pudding
1 package Sugar Free Fat Free Instant Vanilla pudding mix
1 cup Skim milk
½ cup Canned pumpkin (not pie mix)
½ Tsp. Pumpkin Pie spice
2 scoops Vanilla protein powder
1. Add two scoops vanilla protein powder to 1 cup cold milk and mix
thoroughly.
2. Blend dry pudding mix and spice with a fork in medium sized bowl.

3. Pour in the previously mixed milk and protein powder. Add ½ cup canned
pumpkin. Stir/Beat until thoroughly mixed with a wire whisk of electric
mixer.
4. Chill in the refrigerator.

Frozen Coffee Slush


¾ cup Skim Milk
¼ cup Prepared Decaf coffee, cold
1 scoop Vanilla protein powder
8 – 10 Ice cubes
Non caloric sweetener equal to ½ tsp. Table sugar
1. Blend all ingredients (except ice cubes) at lowest speed for approximately
5 seconds.
2. Add ice cubes and blend until slush consistency is formed.

Pumpkin Spice Latte


8 ounces Skim Milk
1 packet Vanilla drink/pudding mix
1 Tbsp. Canned Pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling)
¼ tsp Apple Pie Spice (cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice)
2 tsp Splenda or Equal (add more or less to adjust sweetness)
1 tsp Instant Decaf Coffee
Heat water in microwave (below 130 degrees) then mix in instant coffee.
Add:
prepared Coffee (as prepared above), canned pumpkin, Vanilla drink/pudding
mix, apple pie spice and sweetener in blender. Blend about 30 seconds.
Heat in microwave until warm or serve over ice.

Cinnamon Caramel Coffee


8 ounces Skim Milk
1 packet Vanilla drink/pudding mix
4 tsp General Foods International Sugar Free French Vanilla Café
2 tsp Sugar Free Caramel Syrup
1/8 tsp Cinnamon
Measure 4 tsp General Foods International Sugar Free French Vanilla Café
into a shaker. In a separate cup measure water and heat in microwave
(below 130 degrees). Add warm water to General Foods International Sugar
Free French Vanilla Café and stir. Add 1 packet Vanilla drink/pudding mix to
shaker and shake until dissolved. Add 2 tsp Sugar Free Caramel Syrup to
shaker and stir until combined. Add 1/8 tsp cinnamon and stir.

CHOCOLATE RECIPE SUGGESTIONS


Chocolate Banana Shake
8 oz. skim milk
1 scoop chocolate protein powder
1 Tbsp. sugar free fat free banana flavored instant pudding mix
1 Tbsp. sugar free fat free chocolate flavored instant pudding mix
Blend all ingredients in a blender.

Chocolate Shake

8 oz skim milk
2 Tsp. cocoa powder
1 scoop chocolate protein powder
Blend all ingredients. Serve hot (not over 130 degrees) or cold.

Cola Frost
6 ounces Diet/Caffeine Free cola, well chilled
1/8 tsp. Almond extract
1/8 tsp. Cinnamon
½ cup Ice
1 scoop Chocolate protein powder
1. Pour diet soda and almond extract into the blender and blend well.
2. Add ice, contents of product and cinnamon into the blender at lowest
speed for 10 seconds.

Chocolate Cherry Shake


8 oz skim milk
2 Tsp. cherry sugar free gelatin mix
1 T. sugar free/fat free chocolate pudding mix
1 scoop chocolate protein powder
Mix protein powder and milk, stir in pudding mix.

Hot Spiced Coffee


¾ cup Prepared Decaf coffee
1/8 tsp. Brandy extract
1 scoop Chocolate protein powder
Pinch Nutmeg
1. Pour ingredients into blender and blend at lowest speed for 5 seconds
2. Warm to serving temperature (not greater than 130 degrees) stirring
constantly.

Chocolate Covered Orange Cooler


6 ounces Diet/Caffeine Free orange soda, well chilled
1/8 tsp. Orange extract
1 scoop Chocolate protein powder
1 T. Chocolate sugar free/fat free pudding mix
1/8 tsp. Cinnamon
Pinch Cloves
Noncaloric sweetener equal to ½ tsp. Table sugar.
1. Pour diet orange soda, orange extract and sweetener into blender.
2. Add contents of product, cinnamon and cloves into blender and blend at
lowest speed for 5 seconds until all of the ingredients are dissolved.
3. Serve over ice or make into slush by freezing 1 ½ to 2 hours until mixture
is semi-solid form.
4. Place into the blender until slush consistency.

Mocha Java
¾ cup Prepared Decaf coffee, hot or cold
1 scoop Chocolate protein powder
1 T. Chocolate sugar free/fat free pudding mix
Noncaloric sweetener equal to ½ tsp. Table sugar
1. Pour all ingredients into the blender.
2. Blend at lowest speed for approximately 5 seconds and serve over ice

Rum Frosty
6 ounces Diet/Caffeine Free Cola, well chilled
¼ tsp. Rum extract
1 scoop Chocolate protein powder
1. Blend all ingredients at lowest speed until frothy, approximately 10
seconds.
2. Freeze 1 ½ to 2 hours or until semi solid consistency.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Shake


8 oz. skim milk or water
1 scoop Chocolate protein powder
1/4 Tbsp. Peanut Butter
1 Tbsp. fat free sugar free instant chocolate pudding mix
Blend all ingredients in a blender.

Chocolate Cheesecake Shake


8 oz. skim milk or water
1 scoop Chocolate protein powder
1 Tbsp. fat free sugar free instant cheesecake pudding mix
1 Tbsp. fat free sugar free chocolate pudding mix
Blend all ingredients in a blender.

STRAWBERRY RECIPE SUGGESTIONS

Strawberry Cheesecake Shake


8 ounces Skim milk
1 packet Strawberry drink/pudding mix
1 Tbsp. Sugar free fat free cheesecake flavored instant pudding
mix
1 Tbsp. Sugar free fat free vanilla flavored instant pudding mix
Blend all ingredients in a blender for approximately 5 seconds.

Strawberry Daquiri
8 ounces Skim Milk
¼ tsp. Rum extract
1 packet Strawberry drink/pudding
Blend all ingredients in a blender for approximately 5 seconds. Serve
over ice, or create a slush by freezing for 1 ½ to 2 hours until semi-
solid.

Tropical Colada
8 ounces Skim milk
½ tsp. Banana extract
¼ tsp. Coconut extract
1 packet Strawberry drink/pudding
Crushed ice

Blend all ingredients in a blender for approximately 5 seconds. Serve
over ice, or create a slush by freezing for 1 ½ to 2 hours until semi-
solid.

Pina Colada
8 ounces Skim Milk
1 T. Banana Cream sugar free/fat free pudding mix
¼ tsp. Coconut extract
1 scoop Strawberry protein powder
1. Pour diet V-8 splash and pudding into the blender.
2. Add contents of strawberry product into blender and blend well until all
ingredients dissolved.
3. Serve over crushed ice.
