EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The presentation is on Statistical Analysis on

waiting time of two banks with

statistical tool, assigned by Dr. Swapan

Kumar Dhar, Professor, Department of Statistics,

for my educational fulfillment of the BBA program of
IBA, JU.

(a) Construct suitable diagrams for the waiting times for both the branches. Describe
shapes of their distributions.
Ans:

Commercial & Residential branch: Both the graphs are symmetric and normal.
(b) Compare descriptive statistics prepared for both the waiting times. What
similarities and differences are there in the distribution of the waiting time at the two
bank branches?
Ans:

Mean: Average waiting time in commercial branch (4.29) is less & in residential
bank (7.11) it is more.

Standard Deviation: As the S.D. of commercial branch (1.64) is more than the
residential branch (1.48), its variability is more and it is less uniform & the variability
of residential branch is less & its S.D. is more uniform.

(c) At the 0.05 level of significance, is there evidence that the mean waiting time at
the bank is less than 5 minutes?
Ans:

Commercial branch

Ho: µ = 5; Against H1: µ < 5

ttab = 2.145 & tcal = -1.6767

Given that the level of significance, α=0.05 & the test is left tailed test.

Here,| tcal |< ttab.

So, Ho is accepted.

Residential branch

Ho: µ = 5; Against, H1: µ < 5

ttab = 2.145 & tcal = 5.52.

Given that the level of significance, α=0.05& the test is left tailed test.

Here, | tcal |> ttab.,

So, Ho is rejected.

(d) What assumption must hold in order to perform the test in (C)?
Ans: Commercial branch & Residential branch

# Sample is taken from normal population

# σ is unknown & estimated from small sample (n<30)

(e) Evaluate this assumption through a graphical approach. Discuss.

Ans:

Commercial branch & Residential branch:

It is a left tailed test & the level of significance, α=0.05.

(f) As a customer, you walk into the branch office during the lunch hour; you ask the
manager how long you can expect to wait. The branch manager replies, “Almost
certainly not longer than 5 minutes.” On the basis of the results of (c), evaluate this
statement.
Ans:

Commercial branch: From the result of (C) null hypothesis is accepted. Mean
waiting is less than 5 minutes. So the given statement is true.

Residential branch: From the result of (C) null hypothesis is rejected. Mean
waiting is equal to 5 minutes. So the given statement is true.

(g) Obtain the 95% CI of the population mean waiting time and comment.
Ans:
Commercial branch: From the 95% CI of the population mean waiting time
we get, 3.38 < µ < 5.20

So, Population mean will remain between 3.38< µ<5.20

Residential branch: From the 95% CI of the population mean waiting time
we get, 6.29<µ<7.93.

So, Population mean will remain between 6.29< µ<7.93

(h) For the bank branch located in a residential area, repeat (c) to (g).

(c) At the 0.05 level of significance, is there evidence that the mean waiting time at
the bank is less than 5 minutes?
Ans: Ho : µ = 5

against H1 : µ < 5

ttab = 2.145
tcal=5.52
Given that the level of significance, α=0.05& the test is left tailed test.

t t
| cal |> tab , Ho is rejected
