Durable Asphalt Construction Methods

Increasing traffic and axle loads are leading to an extreme strain on the entire roadway pavement and
on the asphalt wearing course in particular. The build-up of unfavourable influences on the asphalt
pavement can lead to deformations such as rut-formation. Unfavourable influences include for
instance intensive solar irradiation in locations on south-facing slopes, driving heavy goods traffic on
inclines and lorry braking zones in downhill sections and at junctions.

The asphalt construction methods are being further developed and optimised to combat such damage.
The BASt observes test sections laid in the road network over years. As well as the effectiveness of
these optimisation measures, recordings are also made on whether surface and pavement properties
are negatively influenced or not.

One of the aspects observed on the test sections is their resistance to deformation. The sections are
monitored at intervals over time using the profilograph at exactly defined points. A beam is used as a
basis for the measurements; it is laid horizontally across the road for the measuring process. A digital
recording of the shape of the road surface is automatically made via a sensor wheel. This means it is
possible to trace rut formation over years.

Lateral profile after 2, 5 and 9 years

The lateral profiles recorded can be represented graphically. The vertical scale showing height is ten
times larger than the horizontal scale showing the distance across the road in order to make even
small deformations optically clear. The graph shows the rut development of a heavily-loaded test
section on a federal autobahn over nine years. The construction method tested here has not proved
successful. Maintenance measures have already become necessary after this short time.

Technical regulations are continually adapted to requirements based on the many years of practical
experience and research results. The improvements can only be directly applied in new constructions
or where fundamental renewal measures are carried out on the road. Already existing sections have to
be made safe for traffic through maintenance measures. This also requires research;
the BASt promotes and supports research in this area.
