We can accept up to 2-3 volunteers for 1-2 weeks from July to October this year.

The Monastery Garden is a historical park and a small organic farm belonging to
an almost thousend-years-old bendictine monastery in Central-West Hungary. It is
situated in the area of a National Park in a small village called Bakonybél. The
landscape is a picturesque valley sorrounded by the Bakony-forest.
We grow and collect medical herbs (mints, lemongrass, lavender, etc.) as well as
fruit (black currant), and try to keep the historical park in order. Work optio
ns may include weeding, seating, hoeing, collecting, park-maintenence, and mowin
g. We offer: 1-2 bed rooms, kitchen, fridge, hot shower, tent space, wi-fi Inter
net connection in the yard and 1 hot meal a day.
We are benedictine monks, a religious order belonging to the Catholic Church. Pe
ople who want to work with us are supposed to respect the spirit of the place an
d the schedule of the monastery.
Our village, Bakonybél is near Zirc in Veszprém County and you can reach it by couch
from Budapest (3 daily buses, the journey takes 3 hours)

We may ask you to utilize some of your building skills and food processing skill
s if this is not a problem for you. Do you have a driving license or otherwise c

Our family farm is located in Hungary, at Sátormapuszta, outside the village of He
gyesd, in the Balaton Uplands National Park, 7 kms from the town of Tapolca . La
ke Balaton is approximately 20 minutes by car. We farm organically on a total of
30 hectares , keep Hungarian Grey Cattle (which are a beef breed) on the grazi
ng fields and grow their winter feed on plough land. We keep chickens for eggs a
nd rabbits for meat. We also have two horses. In addition to this we provide our
winter firewood from our own forest. We grow vegetables for the family and our
guests. There is also a young orchard next to our family house. We also grow som
e herbs and collect some wild herbs primarily for our own use and that of our gu
ests. Any surplus produce from the farm is sold. Over the past 16 years we have
continuously been improving the farm - building fences, barns, and outbuildings
and have been reintroducing disused lands into agricultural production.
We require the volunteers who come to us to help with the vegetable garden, help
with firewood, help clear fields, help with fencing, help with the animals, inc
luding riding the horses (if the volunteers are willing and able to do so).
What we offer is a separate fully equipped apartment and full board for a 6 hour
day, 5 day a week. Meals are normally with the family but this may change occas
ionally if schedules or events so dictate in which case the volunteers may have
to prepare meals for themselves from provided ingredients.
Peter is English, Barbara is Hungarian, their two children Aaron (25) and Naomi
(21) study at the Budapest Technical University and are mainly at home at weeken
ds. Living with the family is Betty who is Barbara s 85 year old mother. Everyone
in the family partakes in the farm work.
Regards
Barbara and Peter Ware
