Here are chords that you’ll definitely want to study. Column 1 is just your basic seventh chord. Col- umn 2 is a “root-less” version that adds the 9th. Column 3 is a “fourths” version. This is a quartal- voicing, meaning that it is built on 4ths. Column 4 is the closed-position of col 2. Column 5 is another quartal-voicing.

Practice tips:

1. Work on understanding how these chords are being formed. Where’s the 3rd, 7th, etc.

2. Practice them as written in the key of C slowly with each hand and hands-together.

3. Transpose them to a new key every week.

4. Use them in ii-V-I exercises and with play-a-long accompaniment.

5. Start using them in songs!

Here are the voicings from page one with an alternate left-hand. Analyze the notes in the left-hand. Is it the root, third, seventh? How would it sound if you changed it? Try alternating a different left-hand (within the set) to see how it sounds. For example, try the left-hand of the C-7 QUARTAL 1 and play it under the C-7 ROOTLESS-OPEN.
