Does the writer open with an interesting statement that gives the reader a clue
about the topic that will be discussed in the essay?
Does the writer provide at least 1-3 sentences that give the reader background
information on the topic?
Is the name of the narrative (i.e., play, short story, novel, or poem) and the
author mentioned within the first 1-3 sentences?
Is the thesis statement placed near the END of the introduction (before the
preview sentences)?
Does the writer provide a preview of how they will prove their thesis by
introducing the three main arguments of the essay?
Does the writer have a clear and coherent topic sentence that introduces his/her
first argument?
Does the writer use a variety of appropriate and sophisticated transition words
and/or sentences to move on to new points/arguments?
Does the writer use the STATE, QUOTE, EXPLAIN method effectively
throughout the paragraph?
Does the writer explain his/her quotations and effectively link them back to the
topic sentence AND thesis statement?
CONCLUSION CHECKLIST
Does the writer restate his/her thesis statement using different words at the
BEGINNING of the paragraph?
Does the writer summarize the three main points discussed in his/her essay in an
interesting way?
Does the writer end with an important insight about the literary work that
provokes the reader to think?
Overall, does the conclusion provide an interesting and powerful summary and
restatement of the essay’s thesis?
