posing as Naxals allegedly looted
six houses in two Dantewada vil-
lages. They used their NCC uni-
forms to pose as Maoists, Dante-
wada police officials said.
Among the arrested three were

had called their staff to

A 55-year-old woman who
was allegedly molested by

days back, reiterated her
charge and said that earli-

They are losing.
Elections are not about data, they
are about controlling the narrative.

est to one’s persona, one wins and

Kerala in more than 40 years to not

omy was in deep recession. In fact,
this was India’s first non-agricul-
ture led recession. Agriculture and
allied activities constitute only 15
per cent of aggregate income. For
sustained increase in farm house-
hold incomes, the DFI committee
identified a seven- pronged strategy.
The first six were about farming: in-
creasing the productivity of crops,
of livestock; increasing efficiency
and reducing cost; increasing crop-
ping intensity; increasing crop di-
versification toward cash crops and
improving prices received. The last
measure depends on the market, or
on the Minimum Support Price
regime followed by the government.
Thankfully for the farmer producer,
the global agricultural price index
is at a decadal high. How much of

the lives of people better, they
would have won the election. The
voters saw them as efficient in gov-
ernance even if their leaders were
uncharismatic and low-key, but
they erred in not creating a narra-
tive and paid the price for it. This is
bolstered by the fact that they beat
every pollster by winning more
than double the seats the most opti-
mistic had predicted for them.
Narrative usually has to be com-
bined with some great ground-lev-
el organisation working to take the
message to the people in every
nook and corner of the state and
country. However, sometimes, a
strong narrative can overcome the
deficiency of not having a grass-
roots level organisation working
overtime to ensure that the party
wins. This election should serve as
a reminder to the Congress party
run by the Gandhi siblings and the
matriarch that the time has come
to start creating a narrative that
can help them in winning elec-
tions. Opposing the government is
not enough, you have to create your
own story and sell that story. So far,
they have failed.

porters of the world. The main ex-
ports are cotton, rice, soya and
meat. If the government keeps ex-
port prices deregulated, then this
can certainly prove beneficial. It is
important to note that the livestock
economy i.e. milk, eggs, poultry and
meat, constitute one-third of agri-
cultural GDP. It is here that much
more policy focus is required to in-
crease farmers’ incomes. As for the
remaining seventh strategy, that
calls for making conditions easier
for farmers to leave and migrate to
non-farming activity.
Many years ago, a national survey
of farmers had revealed that 40 per
cent said they would gladly leave
farming if only there were good
quality jobs available in industry or
services. This is the crux of solving
the agricultural income challenge.
The big part of the solution lies out-
side of agriculture. With a robust
growth in manufacturing, in em-
ployment intensive sectors such as
construction, agro-processing, tex-
tiles and garments, leather indus-
tries, and even in services such as
tourism and retail, that will make a
large impact on the incomes of
farm households.
The farmers’ protest against the
three national laws passed by Par-
liament in September 2020, is now
in its ninth month, and shows no
sign of relenting. Clearly, the main
concern is what happens to the
MSP when the compulsory pro-
curement of foodgrain from the
northern states gets diluted. There
is also concern about the relative
bargaining and contracting power
of the small farmer vis-a-vis the
large private purchaser. In an econ-
omy still reeling from Covid and in-
dustrial investment and employ-
ment still not vigorously picking
up, the high inflation in agriculture
will not be enough to raise farmers’
incomes by much. The goal of dou-
bling the income of farmers by
2022-23 is still elusive.

attacked on Thursday, is being escorted by the aircraft carrier USS
Ronald Reagan, US Central Command said in a statement. "US Navy
explosives experts are aboard to ensure there is no additional danger to
the crew, and are prepared to support an investigation into the attack,"
said Central Command, which oversees American military operations in
the Middle East and Central Asia.

(FSEs) would have the opportuni-
ty to earn as much as Rs 35,000 and
more in monthly salaries and
commissions.
The company is looking to hire
youth and undergraduates as FSE.
"Paytm has started hiring FSEs.
It is an opportunity open for indi-
viduals who have either passed
Class 10, Class 12 or are a graduate.
It will help in employment genera-
tion in small cities and towns, es-

about 1.33 million people since the
beginning of the 20th century, are
getting more intense with warm-
ing ocean waters. In the wake of
disaster, environmental and social
conditions also threaten public
over 1,800 deaths in August 2005
from drowning, injury and physi-
cal trauma, but also led to an
abrupt increase in heart condi-
tions and serious mental illness. A
decade later, persistent mental and
cardiovascular health issues are
among the reminders of the storm.
2. Migration and displacement:
With the rise of global sea level,
coastal flooding is becoming com-
mon and severe. Advancing ocean
waters, erosion and thawing per-
mafrost can make some coastal set-
tlements hard or impossible to live
in. The Yup'ik village of Newtok
(Niugtaq), for example, began the
first phase of a planned relocation
in 2019, after coastal storms and
thawing permafrost began destroy-
ing the village. While the newly re-
located residents have reported
feeling healthier, even proactive re-
sponses can lead to new risks to
health and well-being. Relocations
can lead to distress and trauma
when residents have a strong at-
tachment to a place.
3. Sea ice decline: Over the past 40
years, Arctic sea ice has become
smaller and thinner. Sea ice is a
defining feature of life in the Arc-
tic. The sea ice decline makes navi-
gation more dangerous and less
predictable. It can change the tim-
ing and location of harvests, in-
crease harvesting costs and reduce
how much is harvested. This can
lead to less food and money, more
anxiety about food access and
greater reliance on less healthy im-
ported foods, negatively affecting
food security and mental health.
4. Seafood decline: Seafood is a key
source of protein and essential nu-
trients, especially where they're in
short supply from other locally ac-
cessible foods. But climate change is
already driving species towards the
North and South Poles. This may
lead to serious declines in seafood
catches by 2050 and negatively affect
millions globally, with the most se-
vere impacts in developing coun-
tries and among coastal Indigenous
Peoples. Projected declines of
salmon and herring catches in
British Columbia, for instance, may
lead to inadequate intakes of sever-
al vitamins, minerals and fatty
acids for coastal First Nations.
5. Hazards in ocean waters: The
ocean is polluted with mercury, in-
dustrial chemicals, pharmaceuti-
cals, microplastics, and more. It
also harbours many naturally oc-
curring micro-organisms, like
flesh-eating bacteria and cholera,
and toxins. These can become dan-
gerous to human health when
ocean chemistry and temperature,
and other marine ecosystem dy-
namics, are altered, which can lead

ast week, I had dwelt on display pictures (DP)s on social
media portals that reflect the ‘Perpetual Mindset’ and
Oprah’s quote best reflects the state of mind of the
Perpetual DP profilers. Their obsession with that one thing – a
certain celebrity or pet, for example – leads to that part of their
identity eventually becoming their whole identity. Thankfully, the
second broad type of DPs that fall under Current Mood, do not
suffer from that kind of intense identity complex.
CURRENT MOOD:
Certain DPs are also time-bound and reflect just the current
mindset or mood of the person. It is not a statement of relative
perpetuity, but one stemming from a certain sense of immedia-
cy. For example, you may be a pethusiast, but something in
your life may trigger a reason for you to change your usually pet
picture DPs to something else through which you want to com-
municate what is currently going on in your life. The various
sub-species of this group are:
The ‘Pity Me’ DP: This is a DP which is actu-
ally not a DP! In fact, it is just a blank picture
put up by a sulking attention seeker who cur-
rently feels that ‘Kisiko meri parwah nahi hai!’.
Consequently, a colourful, happy DP will suddenly be taken off,
leaving the space blank. Why, you may ask? Solely to tell my
followers that something about my life is not right. It's actually a
well thought-out invitation to the question: "Hey, is everything
okay? Why did you remove your DP?”
The Deep DP: Motivational quotes, vague life
principles and inspiring thoughts are the signa-
ture of this DP type. Nobody actually may be
seeking their profound wisdom, but that is
hardly a detriment to these self-proclaimed sages.
The genre of wisdom varies from time to time, depending on
their own life struggles, challenges or victories.
The Nirupa Roy DP: Remember Nirupa Roy,
the Rudaali Queen of Bollywood who mas-
tered the art of crying? Well, this category is a
tribute to her, given that these DPs reflect the
‘dukhi atma’ mindspace of the person. There are
also two sub-types within this group – The No
Smile Please DP and the Melancholic Quote
DP where sad quotes, sadder phrases and the
saddest thoughts reflect the mood of the per-
son, and often change with it. What’s interesting
is that both these types of DPs are usually directed at a particu-
lar person on their friend list, who has caused them to be
gloomy and depressed in the first place!
The Gehri Soch Mein Dooba Hua DP:
These are your new-age Descartean thinkers,
with the one vital difference being that they are
just simulated thinkers. Why do the real thing
when you can just pretend? Think of The Thinker,
and you will know exactly the kind of poses that this species
proudly projects. The more distant the gaze, the more far-reaching
thinking you are capable of, seems to be the operating principle
here.
The See-My-i-Phone DP: What’s the point of
an owner’s acquisition without stirring your
neigbour’s envy? This Onida-ian principle is the
prime driver of this kind of DP characterised by
random selfie images taken in random places like malls, cinema
halls, etc. Of course, the more shiny surfaces all around you, the
better this DP gets, case in point being a lift. And hey, an i-
phone is worth a show, right?
The Pehchan Kaun DP: In footballing terms,
this is a self-goal! If the sole purpose of a DP is
to identify the person, this DP defeats it. By
uploading pictures with friends, family or kids,
they keep their followers confused as to who they
really are. My secret hunch is that most of them suffer from an
inferiority complex!
The Been There ‘Scene’ That DP: This is the
Sartaj Badshah of the DP world, easily the
most popular. Earlier, travel gave us pleasure,
perspective, peace, etc., but today, its most
important purpose seems to be to provide us with a
lot of DPs. Looking at these wanderlust DPs, you may come to
the erroneous conclusion that these people travel a lot, but if
you look closely, you will see that all of their DPs are from one
single visit - just the magic of different clothes, angles and
scenes. For them, one trip is equivalent to a year full of DPs.
Wonder what they were putting up as their DPs during lock-
down? #Throwback bro!
We at Red Lab (Rediffusion Consumer Lab) unearthed quite a
few species and sub-species of DPs. So which type are you?
Your friend? Wife? We sincerely hope that this piece will give
you a peek into the windows of many souls.

ACING IT
Sam Balsara: You started your working life
operating from a joint family. Would you say
this helped make you a better listener,
taking everyone's point of view on the table
and prepared you in some way for an
independent and accomplished business
and personal life?
Harsh Mariwala: I lived in a joint family of
about 25 members who had diverse interests.
My father and my uncle played golf, one of my
uncles was a sailor. Another used to ride. I got
to try new things. I did a lot of sailing and rid-
ing. I also started playing golf and dabbling in
Indian classical music. The joint family really
broadened my horizons. Being in a joint fami-
ly also teaches you to be tolerant. You have to
go on adjusting, whether it is the food or some-
thing else. It also taught me a lot of business
sense. Our business was also joint, so a lot of
business issues would get discussed at home,
besides success stories of other business fami-
lies doing well. On the flip side, living in a joint
family, you're not that inde-
pendent. You don't get au-
tonomy. If you’re not al-
lowed to air a differ-
ence of opinion, then
it's frustrating. But
overall, it taught me a
lot of things which I
was able to apply later
in my journey.

Atmospheric water generation (AWG) tech-
nology was probably pioneered in Israel.
How did you think of bringing the technol-
ogy to India and what have been the high-
lights of AKVO’s journey so far?
In late 2016, as I was reading about Cape
Town and its impending water scarcity
and with major metros of India running
out of ground water along with other
natural resources, it dawned upon me that
India needed a workable approach in
mitigating this crisis. So I embarked upon
a completely new, unsung terrain of
manufacturing atmospheric water
generators for India and Middle Eastern
countries. After a lot of research online, I
investigated this amazing source of water
which is practically untapped. It took us
over a year to build our first running
machine. Up to now, we have sold over 450
machines worldwide. Some noteworthy
highlights: 1. Hardua Mangarh in Damoh
region of Madhya Pradesh faced an acute
water crisis. The villagers had to climb
down a 200-year-old well, just to fetch
water. They had to form a human ladder
going down the steep well, taking great
risk to fetch a bucket of water. During
summer, it often dried up, forcing people to
migrate from the village. The Public

It's important that you create the right net-
works. I've done it in my own journey. It's very
important to broaden your horizons and be
part of some other groups where you get to
listen to diverse views. It'll help you in terms
of working with other diverse viewpoints, lis-
tening to others, and also build consensus. You
can't replicate the joint family unless you stay
in the joint family.
In your book, you mention that your father
not allowing you to go abroad for an MBA
was perhaps a blessing in disguise. Would
you say from looking around that most MBAs
do not grow entrepreneurially?
I always knew that I wanted to be in business,
and I would never work for anybody else. If you
look at people who are MBAs, the likes of Uday
Kotak… he started his own business, complete-
ly different from his family business. Ajay Pira-
mal is also an MBA. He started on his own and
he went into pharma and all that. A lot de-
pends on the individual and what he or she
wants to do. Many new age MBAs have
worked for a short period of time in US com-
panies and then started on their own and
made a success out of it. We are seeing more
and more entrepreneurs willing to take a risk
and try something new. Some of the earlier en-
try barriers have got eliminated. You see so
many entrepreneurs entering the D2C branded
business. Ultimately, you cannot generalize.
Your father took the bold step of moving
from trading to manufacturing, as I
understand. And you took the step
of moving from manufacturing
to branding. Was there a sin-
gle eureka moment that led
you to the decision that
branding is the way to go
for the kind of products
you dealt in? Or did
you see that the
profits of the other
FMCG companies
were much high-
er, or what ex-
actly led you to
this deci-
sion?
Our aim is to make everyone
water-independent: NS Bagga
Madhya Pradesh approached AKVO to
come up with a solution. Now, after over
two years of the installation of the AKVO
365K machine unit there, villagers receive
about 1,000 litres of fresh drinking water
every day from air. 2. During the summer
months of 2019, the Greater Chennai
Corporation had installed AKVO
atmospheric water generator in its
premises on a trial basis. Currently, over
50 machines have been installed in
Chennai across schools, residential
complexes, private institutions etc. 3. Over
44 AKVO machines have been installed at
the Qatar FIFA World Cup 2022 stadium,
with an order for over 350 more. AKVO
atmospheric water systems have also
installed their new 300 litre machine at
Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority.
DP World has already installed their first
machine in their Dubai port.
How have your operations grown since you
started out in 2017 – what is the compa-
ny’s topline currently? What is the
strength of your user base and distribution
network? What kind of competition is
there in the market?
We have targeted a topline of Rs 5 crore
this financial year. We currently have a user
base in eight countries across the world like
India, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Chile,
Philippines, South Africa, ranging from
large corporates to governments and house-
holds. There are many new players entering
the market, but we are the largest, one of the
oldest and most established brands in India.
How much does an AKVO machine cost ini-
tially and how cost effective is it compared

organization, I had

merce graduation
from Mumbai Univer-
sity and my father left
me to explore and
start looking around.
We had three different
businesses: a chemi-
cal business, spice ex-
tracts business and
edible oil business. It
was B2B, not B2C
business. It was in a
way commoditized

formance was very er-
ratic. Yes, my father
made the transition from trading to manufac-
turing, but it was not giving us sustainable
margins. We were crushing kopra to make co-
conut oil, we were refining oils and selling it to
industries. We were also supplying coconut oil
in big railway tankers to one large packer of an
FMCG brand in Calcutta. My uncles used to tell
me, see how this party is, they converted the
whole business into branded. Low margins, not
sustainable margins, combined with what I
went on hearing from my uncles, opened my
eyes. These brands were buying our product.
And the quality of the product also was very
good. So, I thought of converting this busi-
ness from unbranded to branded. It would
make the business far stronger, more prof-
itable and more sustainable. The first few
years, I just concentrated on sales and distribu-
tion, and that paid dividends. We started get-
ting increased market-share in all the markets
where we launched, and over a period of
maybe five years, we launched all over the
country. It was great fun to make a sale on your
own. The packaging and manufacturing were a
lot of learning for me. I understood how the
trade was operating, and the retailer and dis-
tributor network. The scale was small, but I
started liking it.
At Marico, you were able to win in the
marketplace mainly when you innovated or
pioneered a new concept or product.
Wouldn’t you agree that this is a far riskier
proposition in the FMCG market than being
a No. 2 brand which can also be a
reasonably successful business? So, what
was your thinking?
When we entered coconut oil, we
were not even No. 3 or 4; we
were like

national level.
In the initial
phases, we built a
distribution network, be-
came perhaps No. 3 or No. 4. And then we
innovated. We had multiple innovations
in packaging. And that's how we just cat-
to RO/UV or bottled drinking water?
Our home model AKVO Pod can make up to
50 litres of pure drinking water per day. It is
India’s first indigenously manufactured at-
mospheric water generator. Our AWG tech-
nology replicates the natural process of con-
densation by simulating a dew point, which
allows it to make water continuously, even in
low humidity conditions. AKVO works on a
simple plug and play method and con-
sumes one unit of electricity to run for an
hour. Moreover, this water is cheaper than
any RO/UV or bottled market water. While
the RO/UV filtrated water wastes four litres
of water for just one litre of drinking water,
AKVO has zero water wastage. Bottled min-
eral water is available at Rs 4.50 to

share. You have to have something innovative,
which will appeal to the consumer. It’s in my
DNA to pioneer. Something new is just my pas-
sion. If I look back at my journey, a brand like
Saffola was a pioneering move. Saffola Foods
was a pioneering move. Revive was a pioneer-
ing move. So was Kaya Skin Clinic. Whenever
we pioneered, we failed also. But ultimately you
need to find out whether you are meeting a con-
sumer need or launching something because
you are in love with that need. In some cases,
we didn't get traction in terms of scale. We had
Saffola atta mix which is good for health, we
had Saffola rice which was always compared to
traditional rice and we were not able to get the
Saffola brand going. In spite of those failures, I
would say you have to look at innovation be-
cause me-too products will not succeed.
You went through a lot of turmoil before de-
ciding to give up the CEO and MD role to
Saugata Gupta and finally took this decision
against your family's wishes. You also say
that in hindsight, it was the right decision,
with Saugata delivering a CAGR of 21% per
annum. Recently, Godrej Consumer Products
also appointed Sudhir Sitapati of Unilever as
their head. So, would you say that more and
more of professional CEOs need to come in?
At some stage, looking at my age, I had to step
down. I didn't have any clue in terms of whom I
would appoint as my successor. I think it just
happened that Saugata came to me saying that
he wanted to be head of a company. So, normal-
ly in India, it's expected that the family hierar-
chy will continue in terms of succession. He
openly asked me, because if that was the case,
then he would have left and joined somebody
else where he could be the CEO. We decided to
promote him, and I decided to step down. But I
think the key learning for entrepreneurs in this
is that, first of all, just because you have a ma-
jority shareholding, it is not your own company.
You have to look at all the stakeholders. What is
good for the company comes first, and not is
what is good for the family.

erally made waves. Tell us about your brief
to The Voice Company for the campaign
and the kind of ROI that you have got.
The brief was simple. We wanted our inno-
vative technology to be the highlight. Our
aim is to make everyone water independent
and change the system. The Voice Company
really stood out in how simple the ideas
were, and how interesting, from a content
perspective. We launched the campaign
only in June, hence we don’t have any exact
figures yet.
What are your expansion plans going
forward? What is the kind of growth you
target? What potential do you see in our
country with severe water scarcity and
beyond it?
We will be adding more Indian metros -
Bengaluru, Mumbai, Goa and Kochi, and in-
ternationally, we are targeting at least five
more countries - USA, Turkey, Greece,
Cyprus and Uganda, to our distribution list.
We are also targeting 100% year-on-year
growth at least for the next three years.
More and more households are looking at
our technology to solve the drinking water
issues that is prevalent across the country.
We need to reduce our dependency on
groundwater and look for permanent solu-
tions to the global water crisis.
What is a motto or life mantra that you
follow all the time?
I believe that there is no substitute for
hard work.
