with the company, Stellar Information Systems ltd. The main
objective of the project undertaken is to:-

India”
This study aims to define the parameters for contenders in

data recovery services in Indian market.
Research was done through personal interface with clients & personal
Interview to IT-Head of Different company from a prepare questionnaire.
Most of the Clients are taking up services from different vendors like, Stellar
Information Systems, Unistal, Disk Doctors, Pro-Data Doctor, Nucleus Data
Recovery Company Pvt ltd., CBL Data Recovery Technologies etc.

INTRODUCTION
Stellar Information Systems, a leading company of data recovery services,

Stellar Information Systems ,which is in data recovery services recovers data
from any kind of data crash in media like logical crash, physical crash &
logical cum physical crash. Stellar Information Systems Limited is an ISO
9001-2000 certified company specializing in data recovery and data
protection services and solutions
The project undertaken by me “major players in data recovery services in

India” helps to the competitor’s analysis and potential of DRS market.
Stellar Information Systems ,which is in data recovery services recovers data
from any kind of data crash in media like logical crash, physical crash &
logical cum physical crash. So this project will help the company to know
that which are the main competitors of Stellar Information Systems in this
DRS Industry.

HARD DISK DRIVE
The hard disk drive is the "data center" of the PC. It is here that all of the
programs and data are stored between the occasions that we use the
computer. A hard disk (or disks) are the most important of the various types
of permanent storage used in PCs (the others being floppy disks and other
storage media such as CD-ROMs, tapes, removable drives, etc.) The hard
disk differs from the others primarily in three ways: size (usually larger),
speed (usually faster) and permanence (usually fixed in the PC and not
removable).
The hard disk plays a very important role in overall system performance,
probably more than most people recognize (though that is changing now as

hard drives get more of the attention they deserve). The speed at which the
PC boots up and programs load is directly related to hard disk speed.
The hard disk, also called the hard drive or fixed disk, is the primary storage
unit of the computer. It consists of a stack of disk platters that are made up
of aluminum alloy or glass substrate coated with a magnetic material &
protective layers. They are tightly sealed to prevent any foreign matter from
getting inside which causes head crash. Hard disks come in removable and
fixed varieties that hold from several hundreds of megabytes to several
gigabytes. The capacity or amount of information that a drive can store is
measured in bytes.
A hard disk uses round, flat disks called platters, coated on both sides with a
special media material designed to store information in the form of magnetic
patterns. The platters are mounted by cutting a hole in the center and
stacking them onto a spindle. The platters rotate at high speed, driven by a
special spindle motor connected to the spindle. Special
electromagnetic read/write devices called heads are mounted onto
sliders and used to either record information onto the disk or read
information from it. The sliders are mounted onto arms, all of
which are mechanically connected into a single assembly and
positioned over the surface of the disk by a device called an
actuator. A logic board controls the activity of the other
components and communicates with the rest of the PC.
Each surface of each platter on the disk can hold tens of billions of
individual bits of data. These are organized into larger "chunks" for
convenience, and to allow for easier and faster access to
information. Each platter has two heads, one on the top of the
platter and one on the bottom, so a hard disk with three platters
(normally) has six surfaces and six total heads. Each platter has its
information recorded in concentric circles called tracks. Each track

is further broken down into smaller pieces called sectors, each of

which holds 512 bytes of information.

Tracks and Sectors
Platters are organized into specific structures to enable the organized storage
and retrieval of data. Each platter is broken into tracks--tens of thousands of
them--which are tightly-packed concentric circles. These are similar in
structure to the annual rings of a tree (but not similar to the grooves in a
vinyl record album, which form a connected spiral and not concentric rings).
A track holds too much information to be suitable as the smallest unit of

storage on a disk, so each one is further broken down into sectors. A sector
is normally the smallest individually-addressable unit of information stored
on a hard disk, and normally holds 512 bytes of information. The first PC
hard disks typically held 17 sectors per track. Today's hard disks can have
thousands of sectors in a single track, and make use of zoned recording to
allow more sectors on the larger outer tracks of the disk.

The entire hard disk must be manufactured to a high degree of precision due
to the extreme miniaturization of the components, and the importance of the
hard disk's role in the PC. The main part of the disk is isolated from outside
air to ensure that no contaminants get onto the platters, which could cause
damage to the read/write heads.

Types Of Hard Disk Crash?
Physical Crash:- When drive is making a ticking or a scratching noise

due to age or bad parts, the aperture arm in the hard drive can fail, failed
motors or the platters can become damaged and lose the data that they hold.
Physical damage could also be due to mishandling of the drive or circuit

failure of the PCB board which is attached to the hard drive. Physical
damage always causes at least some data loss, and in many cases due to
physical damage the logical structures of the file system also may get
damaged, all such damages constitute physical crashes of hard drive.
Another physical issue that sometimes rears its ugly head is an

electronic failure. If you look at a hard drive you will notice a circuit board
on the bottom. This board is basically the brains of the drive, and it is where
the computer interfaces to the hard drive. An electrical failure can occur
unexpectedly at any time. Even brand new hard drives are not totally
immune to having electrical failures. Sometimes it's just a faulty component;
sometimes it's improper installation (i.e. electro-static discharge, grounding
out the board, damaging circuitry during installation).
Logical Crash:- Far more common than physical damage is logical

damage to a file system. Logical damage is primarily caused by human error
which includes accidental deletion of files, accidentally formatting drive and
power outages may cause file system structures getting damaged. Causing a
variety of problems, system crashes, or an actual loss of data.
Logical failures are usually a result of file-system corruption.

This can occur due to a virus, accidental deletion of key files or registry
components, and in some cases even electro-static discharge. In most cases
where a logical failure has occurred, the drive is still recognized by the
system BIOS, but it will not boot. In most cases, your data should still be
intact on the drive, even though it may appear to be inaccessible.

Computer Viruses
Wide spread instances of severe data loss have been reported
when anti-virus software could not stop a virus from causing
severe damage or when an anti-virus was not updated.
Sabotage
Cases of sabotage are being reported regularly and are
increasing at alarming rate. A majority of organizations still do
not have a security policy. Unauthorized intrusions and damages
caused by disgruntled employees and business competitors have
resulted in Major Data Loss.

STATISTICS ABOUT LEADING CAUSES OF DATA LOSS
Despite technological advances in the reliability of magnetic storage media,

data loss continues to rise, making data recovery more important than ever.
On track engineers have identified three trends that are leading to this
increase in lost data.
1. More data is being stored in smaller spaces. Today's hard drives store
500 times the data stored on the drives of a decade ago. Increasing
storage capacities amplify the impact of data loss, making mechanical
precision more critical.
2. Data has become more mission-critical. Hospital patient records. A
graduate school thesis. Personal finance and tax information. Payroll
records. Users today are storing more information electronically than
ever. The loss of mission critical data can have staggering financial,
legal and productivity ramifications on businesses and home users
alike.
3. Backup tools and techniques are not 100% reliable. Most computer
users rely on backups as their safety net in the event of data loss (a
recommended practice). Ontrack research indicates that 80 percent of
its data loss customers regularly back up their data, only to find them
less than adequate at the critical moment they need to restore them.
Backups assume that hardware and storage media are in working
order; that the data is not corrupted, and that your backup is recent

enough to provide full recovery. In reality, hardware and software do

fail and backups don't always contain current enough data.

WHAT IS DATA RECOVERY?
Put simply, data recovery is the process of retrieving computer data that, for
any number of reasons, has become inaccessible using normal methods.
Ontrack has the right tools and experience to solve your data loss problems.
Well, it's really not black magic or rocket science. It's just a matter of having
the right tools and the knowledge necessary to know what to do, much like a
surgeon performing heart by-pass surgery. Many prominent data recovery
facilities have a large array of hardware, software and tools for recovering
data.
Generally speaking when a hard drive is received by a data recovery firm,

the first thing they do is evaluate it, and determine what recovery solution
will be necessary. If the drive failure is a logical issue as mentioned earlier,
then a scan of the drive will be performed to try and repair the file system
corruption. Sometimes a partition can be repaired and the drive restored to
the status that it was before the failure. If this is not possible, then a very
low-level scan will be performed that essentially searches every sector of the
hard drive for files. Once the files are located, they can then be copied to the
media of choice, i.e. a CD-ROM, DVD-ROM or another hard drive. Logical
recoveries can take up an enormous amount of time, especially if the drive is
on the verge of physical failure. It's not uncommon to allow for one day of
scanning and a day for recovering the found files.
If the drive has suffered a physical failure, then the recovery procedure is
quite a bit more challenging. As mentioned above, there are really two sub-
categories of physical failure; mechanical and electronic. An important
element in recovering data from a physical failure is having the necessary
parts to get the drive functioning again. Unfortunately with hard drives if
you have a 20GB Maxtor Hard Drive for example, then you will need
another identical 20GB Maxtor Hard Drive for salvaging parts. In cases
where the electronic circuit board has failed on the hard drive, then you have
to have the exact same circuit board on hand in order to retrieve the

necessary circuit components for replacement. Many times you cannot even
exchange circuit board for circuit board. These repairs generally require
soldering skills and a thorough knowledge of electronics to be successfully

completed. You will most likely hear "Class100 Clean Room" thrown
around a lot when talking to data recovery professionals. Simply stated, a
Class100 Clean Room maintains exceptional air purity, and contains less
than 100 airborne particles larger than 0.5 microns in each cubic foot of air.
This is vital in protecting sensitive internal components of hard drives.
Anytime a hard drive is having an invasive procedure performed on it, a
Class100 clean room or better is needed
The availability of companies offering recovery services and software spans

a wide range from large firms to small shops and from totally dedicated
shops to firms offering a broad array of computer-related products and
services. One good thing to remember — many of these companies will only
charge you if they are successful in recovering some data. If they can't help
you with your data problem, you usually don't have to pay.
How does the process often work? First, you contact a service. Usually they
advise you how to send them your media. Once they receive it, they evaluate
it as to how much data can be recovered. They will then give you a price
quote and an idea of the data that is recoverable. Some companies have fixed
prices per type of media or size of job; other companies cost out each job
individually. You then both approve of the work order and have the work
done, or you politely decline their offer and have the media returned to you.

Data Recovery Process

Once the Data recovery process is complete, the customer care executive /
coordinator sends you the Directory Listing in a text file on E-mail
alternatively you may also verify your Data at the Stellar Lab and register
your written acceptance by E-mail/Fax.
The Data is delivered on a Free DVD or on hard disk supplied by customer.
