Past Tense of “to be”:


O passado do verbo “to be” é formado por “was” ou “were”.
“Was” : usado para I, he, she, it
“Were”: usado para we, you, they

Affirmativa: Negativa Interrogativa


I was I was not Was I?
You were You were not Were you?
He was He was not Was he?
She was She was not Was she?
It was It was not Was it?
We were We were not Were we?
You were You were not Were you?
They were They were not Were they?

Na forma negativa temos a “contracted form :


Was not = wasn´t
Were not= weren´t

Exercises:
1) Study the text. Complete it with the past tense of “ to be” (was/ were):
Hi, Ann. How are you?
Well, I am fine.Yesterday _________ a nice day. In the morning I ____________ at

Past tense of “there to be”:

O passado do verbo “there to be” é formado por “there was” e “there were”.

“There was” é o passado de “there is”, portanto, deve ser usado no singular.
“There were” é o passado de “there are”, portanto, deve ser usado no plural.

Observe:
There is a girl here now. (present)
There was a girl here yesterday. (past)

There are children here today. (present)


There were children here last night. (past)

Interrogativa: Was there? / Were there?

Negativa: There was not / there wasn´t / There were not / there weren´t

My house is very big. Downstairs there is a large living – room, a small dining –
room and a big kitchen. Upstairs there are three bedrooms and two bathrooms.
Oh, there is also a big garage and a beautiful garden. In the garage there are two

Simple Past (regular and irregular verbs):

O passado simples é usado para expressar ações acabadas em um tempo


definido. É geralmente empregado com advérbios de tempo: yesterday, ago,
last...etc). O passado simples pode expressar , também, hábitos passados.
Em inglês, há verbos regulares e irregulares.

Verbos regulares: são formados acrescentando “d”, “ed”, “ied” ao verbo.


“d”: se o verbo terminar em “e” devemos acrescentar o “d”. Ex.: move: moved /
like: liked
“ed”: a maioria dos verbos regulares possuem a terminação “ed”. Ex.:
watch:watched / work: worked / start: started

“ied”: se o verbo terminar em “y” e for precedido de uma consoante, devemos


tirar o “y” e colocar “ied”. Ex.:study: studied. Caso o verbo termine em “y” e for
precedido de uma vogal, apenas acrescentaremos “ed”.Ex.: play: played
Caso o verbo termine em uma sílaba forte formada por consoante, vogal e
consoante (CVC) , dobramos a última consoante e depois colocamos “ed”.
Ex.: stop: stopped / permit: permitted / rob: robbed

Verbos irregulares
O passado dos verbos irregulares não segue nenhuma regra específica. Ver
a lista dos verbos irregulares no seu dicionário.Ex: go/ went get/ got
eat: ate drink: drank
