Our last lesson was about issues in first language acquestion.

First issue is about


distinction between competence and performance. Competence is the underlying
representations of language and ability based on deep knowledge of person’s
language. It is nonobservable ; however, Performance is the linguistic output of our
real world and also observable. It is manifest in a child's speech and act.Children
more concern with performance because communication is important for them, not
grammatical rules. Language is for communication so they focus on actual
manifestation. Performance could reflect competence but for Chomsky, competence is
the idealized. It cannot be perfect because it may include speech errors due to slips of
the tongue,lack of experience and so on.Other issue is about comprehension and
production.Comprehension can be assumed to be equal with competence whereas
production is performance.I think there is a parallelism between them and we cannot
say that comprehension is more important than the other or vice verse.Children
imitate what they have heard around them and later it takes meaning instead of
imitation.They firstly listen and then trying to speak and produce smt. orally although
sometimes they could not comprehend some aspects of the language. Nature and
Nurture are essential issue in FLA.We are born with an innate knowledge (nature)
and moreover environmental factors have huge impact on children language
acquaciton.These factors cannot be ignored.Language acquation is universal and
every child acquires language.It is observed that same common mistakes are done by
children while they are speaking their language no matter where they come from
because it is universal.Language is systematic and there are rules that makes
systematic and also FLA is systematic process.No matter how much systematic it is,
there are different percpective.There are patterns repetetion.Language and thought are
other important issue in FLA.Culture affects the language,language affects cognition
and cognition affects language.Language and cognition are interrelated to each other
and there is a tightly-knit link between them.Children name the world through the
words they know because their view is limited.Thought and language are cognitive
operations that grow together.There is a level(here) and there is potentiol of us (to be
reached) so there is a distant.Every child reaches his/her potential through social
interaction with adults/peers.Also teacher is a bridge to make them reach their
potential.Imitation is center of FLA and for a while , meaning is important because
they are negotiation problem with others.Imitation of the ddeep structure of language
block their attetion to the surface structure in this way they become poor imitators.
(I took my notes about educational psychology during the lesson but I will note down
here when the unit ends (it is my obsession  )) what I get aware that I missed the
systematic part while you are giving information about it (joting down and listening,
trying to understand at the same time aren’t so easy somtimes,so I got confused a little
bit here. I will read again this part and search it. I suppose I need to focus not to forget
these information. In my teaching, I try to create a natural,relax atmospehere.
Linguistic forms aren’t important at first.Communications is important so I should
make students focus on communication in various activities such as singing,dancing,
dramatizing,playing games and so on.Music is played,too.Culture, which students
learn, is important so I could make students concern the dailylife conversation
speech. No matter what students’ background is,anyone can speak a language as long
as they have enough exposure to speech environment.Language is a product of mind
and we need form,content,use.. I should gain students pragmatical competence.
