Runes
By Vitki Freyatru
Well, now you mention it.. Yes, I do. Now the majority of you reading this will look at the
last line and a half of that stanza and say that it goes completely against the Wiccan Rede.
And I would say you would most likely be right too.
The Runes are pre Wiccan, certainly if you trace Wicca back to a Gardinerian origin then this
is true. And though various people have tried to claim lineage to before that time, I have not
come across one which can be proved much further back than the late 18th century.
The runes do not belong to a culture where there was a concept of pure good. The runes do
not accept that such a concept could have a place in the universe. The runes certainly can be
used for attack, for cursing, for binding and for Killing. As I said last week , even if you
intend to do good then you can end up doing harm if you don't know what you are doing.
So how come then that I have a column talking about runes here? How come I am even
talking about what most people reading this would consider using dark magic? What use are
they if they are that dangerous? My point is that you need to understand what you are using.
The runes do not have a concept of good or evil. Even if only using them for divination and
never for magic it pays to know their other uses. If you are going to use their magic for peace
and light, then you better also know how to use them for dark and destruction too. I am not
saying that you should all go out and start cursing with them, far from it. For a start unless
you know what you are doing you are as likely to bring down the curse on yourself as you are
its target. What I am saying is that you need to view runes as a tool a bit like fire. You need to
know the destructive potential so that you can guard against it. Used carefully the Runes can
bring warmth and light. Use them irresponsibly or without knowledge and you can find your
world burning round your ears.
Eostre
Rev. Mehitabel
http://www.goddess.com.au/goddesses/Eostre.htm
Goddess of fertility and new beginnings, we take this opportunity to embrace Eostre's passion
for new life and let our own lives take the new direction we have wanted for so long.
SUGGESTED AFFIRMATIONS:
William Bouguereau
Eostre (pron East-ra) was the Anglo-Saxon goddess of the dawn, from whom "East" (where
the sun rises) and "Easter" got its name - as the fertility goddess of the Northern European
peoples, her legend was manipulated by the invading Romans - newly Christianised, they
merged Eostre's spring legend to coincide with the time of Christ's resurrection.
She is also goddess Ostara, the maiden, in German mythology, celebrated when night and day
are equal and balanced (the spring equinox for the northern hemisphere).
Rev. Andi's This Week In News
From www.theyorker.co.uk
Easter as we know it?
In the UK Christianity has come to dominate our understanding of Easter. However, Easter is
historically diverse in its celebrations and origins, stemming from ancient cultures that
predate Jesus and Christianity.
The celebration of Jesus' crucifixion and subsequent resurrection is the most important date in
the Christian calendar. The date of Easter itself has been disputed throughout the centuries.
Pagan religions in the Mediterranean based their celebrations on a story very similar to that
of Jesus and his resurrection.
Despite efforts by the First Council of Nicaea, held in 325, to establish a fixed date for the
celebrations, the date of Easter alters each year according to the lunisolar calendar. Christian
churches now use 21st March as the starting point for determining the date of Easter; it is
then calculated as the Sunday following the next full moon.
Pagan religions in the Mediterranean based their celebrations on a story very similar to that of
Jesus and his resurrection. Attis, a figure of a mystery cult that appeared in Rome about 200
BC, was reported to have been born of a virgin impregnated by the fruits of an almond tree.
He was believed to be reborn annually, and the celebrations began with a day of blood on
what they called 'Black Friday' and continued over three days in which they rejoiced over his
resurrection. The colour black has also been adopted in Christian celebrations as the symbol
of Good Friday.
The similarity between the stories of Jesus and Attis has led to many suggestions throughout
the ages. ome historians claim that Jesus' life story was simply applied to other figures, while
ancient Christians argued that these stories were examples of the false deities created by
Satan to predate Christ. Generally the link is now disregarded, which could explain why Jesus
is more widely recognised and associated with spring celebrations.
The traditional Easter egg and Easter bunny can be traced back to antiquity as symbols of
fertility. Rabbits and hares, or more specifically Lagomorphs, were symbolic particularly for
their prolific breeding. The phrase 'at it like rabbits' serves to explain these ancient attitudes
towards these animals.
The connection between rabbits and eggs seems to be the result of confusion about how hares
raised their young.
Lagomorphs become sexually mature at a relatively young age and can give birth to several
large litters per year. Females are even able to conceive whilst already pregnant making them
exemplary fertility symbols in Easter folklore.
The phrase 'mad as a march hare' also explains the significance of fertility during the
springtime. The saying refers to the mating rituals of hares during spring. Rejected males
would often perform what appeared to be a 'mad' dance to finally win over the females. This
notable behaviour meant that hares were noticed much more at this time of year.
The goddess Eostre was also associated with hares, and the egg represented the rebirth of the
land during spring. Dyed eggs therefore became part of pagan rituals.
These rituals have also been assimilated into Christian celebrations of Easter. The egg is
recognised by Christians as a symbol of the grave, signifying renewed and resurrected life.
Mary Magdalene
raditionally eggs are decorated red to show the blood of Christ but some Eastern
denominations follow the legend that Mary Magdalene brought cooked eggs to the tomb of
Jesus to share with the other mourners which miraculously turned red when Jesus emerged
from his tomb.
More simply the egg symbolises the end of Lent, a period in which eggs are traditionally
forbidden. The consumption of the remaining eggs on Shrove Tuesday, or Mardi Gras, the
eve of Lent, is the origin of the now largely secular 'Pancake Day'.
The connection between rabbits and eggs seems to be the result of confusion about how hares
raised their young. It is thought that the hare itself was the main origin of many of these
traditions and the rabbit has only been substituted recently due to its more widespread
presence around the world.
It was known that hares built shelters known as forms in which to keep their young. These
were often confused with the nests of lapwings, groups of wading birds who built nests which
resembled the hollowed out nature of the hare's form.
he act of painting chickens' eggs has evolved to include the modern chocolate or plastic
alternatives which now line the shops every Easter. The traditional visit of the Easter bunny
and the resultant Easter egg hunt have come to function outside religious celebrations and
have become practices and symbols in their own right - the J.B. Morrell Library on campus
even conducted its own version last week.
With this increasingly secular recognition of once highly religious symbols the origins of
Easter and its celebrations become all the more interesting.
Disturbing New Info In Covington Teen's Death
From www.local12.com
Disturbing new details are released today about the murder of a 17-year-old Covington boy,
details that involve allegations of vampirism and witchcraft. The five adult suspects charged
in connection with Travis White's murder were in a Kenton County courtroom this afternoon.
Brian Golsby and Kasey Dodson are charged with murder and tampering with evidence.
Investigators say Golsby and Dodson, who play roles as vampires, used their 14-year-old
lover to lure White to a home in Covington late last month.
A detective testified today about the brutal murder. Investigators say White was hit 31 times
with a blunt object, stabbed 29 times, including once in the heart. Police recovered a broken
bloody knife, a bloody baseball bat, a hammer and two foot long crescent wrench from the
home.
David Thompson, Amber Goerler, Dale Eastman and the 14-year-old girl are charged with
tampering with evidence. The 14-year-old is also charged with complicity, because
investigators say she knew White was going to get beat up, but she did not know he was
going to get murdered.
Cancer patients who rely on religion to cope with their terminal illnesses are more likely to
use intensive life-prolonging care, according to a study published this week in the Journal of
the American Medical Association.
Cancer patients who coped through religion were more likely to receive life-prolonging
treatments.
Aggressive treatments such as machine ventilation and resuscitation keep the patients alive,
but they ultimately don't cure them.
"Religious copers may decide to undergo therapies with high risks and uncertain benefits
because they trust that God could heal them through the proposed treatment," the study
authors wrote.
Cancer patients who had high levels of religious coping were three times more likely to
receive aggressive life-prolonging care.
"We're not saying every religious coper is likely to get aggressive care," said one of the
authors, Holly Prigerson, director of the Center for Psychooncology and Palliative Care
Research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. "Most of them did not. Among those who were
getting the most aggressive care, it was disproportionately a function of their being a
religious coper."
How cancer patients cope
A new study finds that religiousness affected end of life treatments.
About 10 percent of those who had high levels of religious coping died in the intensive care
unit, as opposed to 4.2 percent who had low levels of religious coping.
In this study, nearly 80 percent of the 345 patients with advanced stages of various cancers
said religion helped them cope, and about 32 percent reported that their faith was "the most
important thing that keeps you going."
More than half reported praying, meditating or taking part in religious studies. The study
participants were primarily Christian and were followed until death.
The Coping with Cancer study, funded by the National Cancer Institute and the National
Institute of Mental Health, examined the relationship between psychological and social
factors and the end-of-life outcomes at seven medical facilities in Dallas, Texas; Boston,
Massachusetts; West Haven, Connecticut; and Hookset, New Hampshire.
Through adversity and near death, religion can "offer patients a sense of meaning, comfort,
control and personal growth while facing life-threatening illness," wrote the 11 study authors.
"Positive religious coping gives people hope, meaning and purpose," said Dr. Harold G.
Koenig, co-director of the Center for Spirituality, Theology, and Health at Duke University
Medical Center, who is not involved with the study.
"It helps them to cope with the dying process. It gives them hope that something can be done,
as opposed to being depressed and thinking, 'I'm going to die.' For those who are hopeful, the
suffering has meaning, and they say 'I'll hold on longer,' especially African Americans and
Hispanics," he said.
In other research based on the Coping With Cancer study, researchers found that the cost of
Medicare in the last six months of life varied by race: The average cost for whites was
$20,166, compared with $26,704 for black people and $31,702 for Hispanics.
Don't Miss
1.. America becoming less Christian, survey finds
At the end of their lives, "minorities often receive more expensive but not necessarily life-
enhancing care," according to the study published in the March 9 issue of Archives of
Internal Medicine.
Researchers found that one-third of the Medicare budget goes to the medical treatments given
in the last year of life and that 80 percent of those costs were for ventilators and intensive
care.
Blacks and Hispanics were more likely to use religious coping, according to the study. Even
after the analysis was adjusted for factors such as age and race/ethnicity, religious coping was
associated with receiving aggressive medical care.
Cancer patients who relied heavily on religious coping were less likely to understand a do-
not-resuscitate order and felt that such an order was morally wrong. These patients were less
likely to have advanced planning such as having a living will (29 percent, versus 68 percent
who were less religious) or medical power of attorney, which is the ability to act on someone
else's behalf (34 percent, versus 64 percent who relied less on religion).
Study authors wrote that doctors should be attentive to religion as they discuss prognosis and
treatment with terminally ill patients.
"Physicians are hearing and are honoring patients' wishes for more intensive care, even if
they might not believe it," Prigerson said. "What it highlights for clinicians is that they should
have a better sense of how much religious beliefs are being factored into the decision-making
process."
Health Library
1.. MayoClinic.com: Cancer risk -- what the numbers mean
For many physicians, it's a complicated and often uncomfortable line between faith and
science.
"When you have no communication about a factor that's influencing decisions, this is going
to happen," Koenig said. "People hang on for dear life and don't feel their beliefs are
respected when we don't talk about them."
Koenig, who is also a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, recommended that
doctors talk to patients about their "spiritual history" but said research showed that less than
10 percent do.
More than half of Americans believe faith trumps science. In a study published last year, 57
percent of randomly surveyed adults said divine intervention could save a deathly ill family
member even if physicians said treatment would be futile.
"There's a paradox," said Prigerson. "Patients trust their doctors but they may not be trusting
of information about their prognosis shared by their doctors. They may not think it's relevant
and that when or how they die will be determined by God, not by medicine."

You Call It Easter; We Call It Ostara - Part 3
Author: Peg Aloi
http://www.witchvox.com/va/dt_va.html?a=usma&c=holidays&id=1991
To refer again to The Wicker Man, the post office/candy shop where May Morrison works
(she is the mother of Rowan Morrison, the young girl who is supposedly missing and who
Sargent Howie has come to Summerisle to find) offers a large selection of candies shaped
like animals. When Sargent Howie says "I like your rabbits" Mrs. Morrison scolds him
saying "Those are hares! Lovely March hares, not silly old rabbits!" And when Howie goes to
dig up the grave of Rowan Morrison (who it turns out is neither dead nor missing) he finds
the carcass of a hare, and Lord Summerisle tries to convince him that Rowan was
transformed into a hare upon her death. Clearly this is an illustration of the powerful
association with animals that many ancient cultures have (Summerisle being a place where
time has seemingly stood still and where the pagan pursuit of pleasure and simple agricultural
ways define the way of life). The forming of candy into the shape of rabbits or chicks is a
way to acknowledge them as symbols; by eating them, we take on their characteristics, and
enhance our own fertility, growth and vitality.
For clearly the association of rabbits with Easter has something to do with fertility magic.
Anyone who has kept rabbits as pets or knows anything about their biology has no question
about the origin of the phrase "f*** like a bunny." These cute furry creatures reproduce
rapidly, and often! Same with chicks, who emerge wobbly and slimy from their eggs only to
become fluffy, yellow and cute within a few hours. The Easter Bunny may well have its
origin in the honoring of rabbits in spring as an animal sacred to the goddess Eastre, much as
horses are sacred to the Celtic Epona, and the crow is sacred to the Morrigan. As a goddess of
spring, she presides over the realm of the conception and birth of babies, both animal and
human, and of the pollination, flowering and ripening of fruits in the plant kingdom. Sexual
activity is the root of all of life: to honor this activity is to honor our most direct connection to
nature.
At Beltane (April 31st-May 1st), pagans and Witches honor the sexual union of the god and
goddess amid the flowers and fruits that have begun to cover the land; but prior to that, at
Ostara, we welcome the return of the spring goddess from her long season of dormant sleep.
The sap begins to flow, the trees are budding, the ground softens, ice melts, and everywhere
the fragrance and color of spring slowly awakens and rejuvenates our own life force.
I have always thought this had a lot to do with the tradition of wearing newly-bought or made
clothes at Easter, in pastel spring colors. Wearing such colors we echo the flowering plants,
crocus, lilac, forsythia, bluebells, violets and new clothes allow us to feel we are renewing
our persona. How many of us feel sort of "blah" after winter ends? Along with the fasting
practice mentioned earlier, this is a time for many of us to create new beginnings in our lives:
this can apply to jobs, relationships, living situations, lifestyle choices. But since the Equinox
is such a potent time magically, and often (as it does this year) falls in the period when
Mercury is Retrograde, starting a new endeavor at this time can be problematic if we do not
take care. One good way to avoid catastrophe is to engage in small, personally-oriented rites
or activities: a new haircut, a new clothing style or make-up, a new exercise program, the
grand old tradition of spring cleaning, a new course of study: all of these are relatively "safe"
ways to begin anew without risking the weirdness and unpredictability of Mercury
Retrograde.
This is a very powerful time to do magic, not only because of the balancing of the earth's
energies, but because of the way our own beings echo the earth's changes. We are literally
reborn as we emerge from our winter sleep, ready to partake of all the pleasures of the earth,
and to meet the challenges we will face as the world changes around us daily. As we greet
and celebrate with our pagans brothers and sisters of the Southern Hemisphere (for whom the
Vernal Equinox more closely resembles the beginning of autumn, in physical terms!), we
remember that Spring is not only a season; it is a state of mind.
Grandmother spider,
What to do at last.
As we love ourselves,
And balance.

Rev. Andi's Kidz Korner
Especially designed for the children growing up around the Correllian lifestyle!
Merry Meet little hatchlings! Welcome once again to a full to the brim edition of Kidz
Korner!
With Ostara in a couple of days - and with the weekend looming - this should be just the
greatest time to read through this and have lots to try out over the weekend. Lots of great
stories to tell your friends on Monday too!
Ostara is a marker of the coming of spring. New life is all around us, showing in the green
shoots on the trees, sprigs of grass appearing from the mud, and even -- if we're lucky -- a
few flowers poking up. It's a time of chicks and eggs, newborn lambs and calves, and the
days are getting a bit longer and a bit warmer. We can smell the freshness of the earth when
we're outside. A fun project to do at Ostara is make and decorate a tree for the Sabbat. It
doesn't have to be huge or fancy, but it's nice to have one sitting indoors to remind you of the
changing seasons.
6.. A flowerpot
First, paint the pot with spring designs -- flowers, butterflies, ladybugs, eggs, etc. If you have
kids, this is a lot of fun. If you don't mind them getting a bit messy, let them use thumbprints
to make designs. Allow the paint to dry.
Cut a chunk of florist's foam to fit into the pot and then insert the branches into the foam so
that it forms a tree shape. Hang the decorations -- eggs, ribbons, flowers, etc. -- on the
branches. Use salt dough and cookie cutters to make ornaments to hang, if you like.
Use the Spanish moss to cover the florist's foam in the top of the pot. Place your tree on your
altar during ritual, or use it as a tabletop decoration.
Note: Try to use branches that have already fallen on the ground, rather than taking them
from a live tree. If you must cut from a living tree or bush, make sure you do so in a way that
will allow for new growth on the plant. If you have forsythia bushes, they may be blooming
right now - their branches are perfect for this project!
Grease a 9" x 13" baking pan and preheat oven to 350° Fahrenheit / 180° Celsius / Gas Mark
4.
Mix the milk & eggs together; set aside. In another bowl, mix the feta, tomatoes, pepper,
basil, parsley, mushrooms and olives. Add drained pasta and blend well. Pour into the baking
pan.
Top with bread crumbs, if you desire, then pour the milk/egg mixture over the top,
distributing evenly, allowing it to soak down into the pasta.

THE ORDER OF WORLD WALKERS
This Correllian order is headed by the Rev. Krystel High Correll and she is offering training for those
who wish to join the order. The training consists of twelve lessons, one a month, for a year, offered
through e-mail.
The purpose of this order is to fulfill the deeper purposes of the Correllian Tradition--advanced
psychic and spiritual work, primarily conducted on multi-dimensional levels. This work includes:
Learning to connect and work with your spirit guides. Conscious dying and conscious incarnation.
Advanced dream work. Exploring the known boundaries of the multi-dimensional universe, then
conducting independent work to go beyond those boundaries. The study of time and advanced work
within it. Soul rescue (helping those who are not aware they have died, or are not willing to cross
over). Mediumship (being a voice for the so-called dead, visiting the land of the dead and
ommunicating with them, and building a pathway between the living and the dead). Healing, both
personal and of our Earth.
These purposes are divided among five houses that consist of the members who are dedicated to the
work of the House.
The Order of World Walkers is a working order. The training is only the beginning. Each of the
houses offer work that can be done for the rest of your life, if you choose to do it.
I believe that everyone who chooses to become a member of the order chose this before coming into
this life time to continue work begun in other lives.
