Reported Structure

Transform the following sentences from direct speech to reported speech. For each
transformation, state one rule, other than the change in punctuation marks, that
you have applied in the reported clause.

Example:

Sara asked her friend, “Where did I put my shopping bag?”

Transformation : Sara asked her friend where she had put her shopping bag.

Rule : Change in pronoun

Evidence : The first personal pronoun “I” is changed to “she”.

1. John asked her father, “Can I go to the cinema tonight with my friends?”

Transformation : John asked his father if he can go to the cinema with his friends.

Rule : change in pronoun and possessive pronoun.

Evidence : the first personal pronoun “I” is changed to “he” and the
possessive pronoun “my” is change to “his”.

2. “How much is this Prada handbag?” Susan asked the salesgirl.

Transformation : Susan asked the salesgirl how much was that Prada handbag.

Rule : change in tense and demonstrative pronoun.

Evidence : change in tense which is from present tense ‘is’ to past tense
’was’ and also change in demonstrative pronoun from ‘this’ to ‘that’.
3. “I will not be able to attend the meeting today”, Rahmah told Rahim.

Transformation : Rahmah told Rahim that she would not be able to attend the
meeting on that day.

Rule : change in pronoun and time expression.

Evidence : the first personal pronoun ‘I’ is changed to ‘she’ and the time
expression ‘today’ is changed to ‘ on that day’.

4. The tourist asked, “Where is Marco Polo Hotel?”

Transformation : The tourist asked where Marco Polo Hotel was.

Rule : change in tenses and sentence structures.

Evidence : the present tense ‘is’ is changed to past tense ‘was’ and the
structures of sentence is changed from question term, which is ‘where
was..’ to ‘where…was’.

5. Malarani exclaimed, “Oh! I really love the film ‘Titanic’ starred by Leonardo Dicaprio and

Kate Winslet.”

Transformation : Malarani exclaimed with joy that she really loved the film ‘Titanic’
starred by Leonardo Dicaprio and Kate Winslet.

Rule : change in tense

Evidence : change in tense, which is from present tense “love” to past tense
“loved” .

6. John said, “I'm going out now so you will have to wait until I get back."

Transformation : John said that he was going out now so I would have to wait until
he got back

Rule : change in tense, pronoun and time expression

Evidence : the first personal pronoun ‘I’ is changed to third personal pronoun
‘he’,the second personal pronoun ‘you’ is changed to first personal
pronoun ‘I’, the time expressions is changed from ‘now’ to ‘then’ and
tense from present tense, ‘will’ and ‘get’ to past tense ‘would’ and ‘got’.

7. Salim told his friend, “My father’s car is bigger than your father’s.”
 Transformation : Salim told his friend that his father’s car was bigger than his friend
father’s car.

Rule : change in pronoun and tense

Evidence : the personal pronoun ‘my’ is changed to possessive pronoun ‘his’

and change I tenses, which is ‘is’ to ‘was’

8. “I will go to school everyday,” Kassim promised to his mother.

Transformation : Kassim promised to his mother that he would go to school

everyday.

Rule : change in pronoun and tenses.

Evidence : the first personal pronoun ‘I’ is changed to ‘his’ and the tenses
‘will’ is changed to ‘would’.

9. “ We are not attending the Mini Sport because it’s on Saturday.” Kong told his lecturer.

Transformation : Kong told his lecturer that they were not attending the Mini Sport
because it was on Saturday.

Rule : change in pronoun and tenses

Evidence : the personal pronoun ‘we’ is changed to ‘they’ and the present tense ‘is’ is
changed to ‘was’.

10. Sean said to his girlfriend, Cassie, “ I am leaving you for good”

Transformation : Sean said to his girlfriend, Cassie that he was leaving her for good.

Rule : change in pronoun and tenses.

Evidence : the personal pronoun ‘I’ and ‘you’ is changed to ‘he’ and ‘her’ and the present
tense ‘is’ is changed to past tense’ was’.

11. Cassie replied to Sean, “ Please don’t leave me!”

Transformation : Cassie begged Sean that please did not leave her.

Rule : change in pronoun and tense

Evidence : the first personal pronoun ‘me’ is changed to possessive pronoun ‘her’
 and the present tense ‘do’ is changed to past tense ‘did’.

12. “Let’s have nasi lemak or nasi kuning for breakfast.” Said Azman to Azmi.

Transformation : Azman invited Azmi to have nasi lemak or nasi kuning for breakfast.

Rule : change in sentence structure.
